Stephen isn't kidding about "grunting" being a commercial enterprise in the US. There's enough money in it for skilled worm charmers to make a decent living luring worms up and selling them to bait shops and now also for vermiculture (where you use worms to make compost out of your kitchen scraps -- it's amazingly effective and doesn't even smell bad, unlike regular compost heaps where you can smell the fermentation happening). It has been featured in two places in particular, one of them interesting and one laughably bad. The interesting one is "Dirty Jobs". The laughably bad one is "Squirm", a horror movie involving worms that was featured on MST3K (much to the fury of its creator).

We have a machine here in the States for driving worms to the surface using electricity. The device was used in the movie "Napoleon Dynamite" as a time machine.

Pretty much every episode of QI ever made is usually available on KZfaq. Including the extra length QI XL versions. You don't need to pay for them. Curiously, few are actually available on the QI KZfaq channel, however (see above) - that mainly just features small clips.

We were being trained in storytelling and one of the exercises we did was we got it a big circle and were to start telling a story one sentence at time passing it round the circle whilst stepping in and out in unison with each other. I mention this because we were doing it on the meadow and worms where coming to the surface so we kept stopping to get rid of them.

Actually, Woodhall Spa is twinned with the small French town of Roeze sur Sarthe, about 15 kilometres south-west of Le Mans. But you can't hear the cars racing from there (or so I'm told).

When I first saw this clip I wasn't sure if I should be sympathetic to those people or not. I could just as easily have an interest that people think is a waste of time. But today, yeah, it's bad. If someone told me they worm charm I would ask, "Is that something you get good at?" If they could give me any insight about that at all, then I might appreciate it.

So what you're saying is you've become more misanthropic as you've got older...? Because you're absolutely right, you could easily have an interest that people think is a waste of time. I mean, I couldn't care less about worm charming. I also think it's pretty pathetic that there are people who are SO invested in the football team they support that they will be brought to tears if a group of men can't kick a ball into a net enough times quickly enough. But if I ever met a worm charmer in real life I wouldn't say a word about thinking it's silly, just like I don't laugh at some of my friends for sinking into a week long depression every time Liverpool loses. Like whatever you please, it doesn't affect me in the slightest.

Many different ways to bring up worms. Pound on the ground, drive in a metal stake and and tap on it and use electricity. Some of the ways we use in the Ozarks. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Always easy, isn't it, to mock activities like this. As much as I enjoy the show, clearly they don't know one end of a worm from the other. Check the price for live worms for fishing on ebay, and you'll find someone who has the knack of this, is onto a nice little earner.

A properly maintained compost heap, open to the soil below, is quickly FULL of worms. Chuck a split pumpkin in and a couple of weeks later you have a solid mass of worms. Instructions : A plastic barrel eg from a farm, open both ends, and with plenty of 1" holes in for aeration. Place on soil/grass and keep topping up with kitchen scraps and lawn mowings as available. Keep top covered with old sack or similar held in place with a bike tyre, bungee, or similar. If you have more than one barrel on the go it means you can let them really 'mature' and get lovely compost (and lots of worms).
