Actually, there's a sidelight on this. Indian hijra (and the relevant culture does spill over into Pakistan) appear at weddings and birth celebrations. They play music, dance, and then demand to be paid. If the hosts baulk at paying, the hijra lift their skirts and threaten to reveal their genitals, which would involve a curse being laid on the home and everyone in it. So the hosts pay up. So this actually makes a lot of sense in the cultural context.

I have an imaginative way for governments to collect more taxes. Now before anyone comments back that I’m crazy and this will never happen I just want everyone to know, that I know. Here’s my idea - governments need to be honest, transparent and treat tax money like it’s money they worked really hard for and need to spend wisely. If I had a lot of examples on how the government was spending tax money really efficiently and wisely I would be more inclined to not try and avoid paying. Respect the tax payer more basically is my idea.

100% agree. Really, what'd be great is to get a summary every year even (might not be possible to do it on every receipt or payslip) with where your taxes have gone: healthcare 30%, social welfare 20% (the dole, the pension, NDIS/disability), infrastructure 15% (roads, airports, stadiums), military 2% etc. I'd like that a lot. Good idea.

Up until a couple of decades ago, Pakistan, India etc. WAS the Middle East. What we now call the Middle East- Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Cyprus, Syria etc. etc. was called the Near East because it was the nearest bit of the East to us. China, Japan etc. was called the Far East. You will still find institutions or universities or government departments that use the term "Near East" in their names or the courses that they offer (e.g. Near Eastern Archaeology)

Sadly the ATO would never be this imaginative, probably because if they threatened us with trans inspectors far more businesses would default on purpose, lol.

Well that's extremely ignorant and short sighted. Hundreds of cultures have waged war more than American culture. The British Empire didn't just sail around and politely take land from native cultures. They were at war with other European cultures while doing it too. Rome killed hundreds of cultures expanding its borders as well. The Mongols didn't just ride their horses to the edge of Europe and call it their land. Lot of murder and rapes in between. America had little to do DIRECTLY with World War 1 (if you call supplying other countries a murderous act of war then go for it... and we had little impact after joining the war near the end) and we entered Would War 2 out of provocation. We used the nuclear weapons to end the war quickly. It isn't agreed across any culture or country whether or not it was the correct or incorrect decision. We don't "invade" other countries. Very often we're defending them from rebels and helping the peace corps. And I don't see how spending 3.3% of our GDP = "spends most of their money on their military"

I don't think there's such thing as a "correct" pronoun, as grammars are just conventions. But I can agree that, in order to be civil, you should generally treat people as they want to be treated, including pronouns. I think if people appealed to other people's politeness instead of using the pronoun issue as a way to shove progressive ideology on gender and their views about what is "correct" or not down everyone else's throat, they could be more successful.

It is often by the British, yes. To distinguish from 'Far East'. The phrase is a modern catch-all replacement for what used to be called 'Near East' - countries near Europe: Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Syria, Cyprus, Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, Bahrain, and Oman.
