For those of you who don't get Phil Juppitus' comment about the "Rank Organisation", they are an entertainment distribution company in the UK, whose logo was a man hitting a gong, and films they distributed or produced featured a man hitting a gong with the words "The Rank Organisation Presents".

Fun Fact; The Strongman who strikes the massive gong before those Rank films was called Billy Wells; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g-CdnZeclpmYY3k.html The giant gong was actually made of papier-mâché and the real recording of the “bong” noise was made by the well known Percussionist James Blades. He came to give a talk at my school back in the 70s and showed us the little Chinese Tam Tam he used. Is anything ever what it seems?

Another Fun Fact; Stephen Fry will know Corby, certainly from a distance because you could see the Corby Steelworks quite clearly from the cricket pitches on The Upper and The Middle at Uppingham. I know this because I went there too (following on from Prep School and the James Blades percussion lecture). Fry had been expelled before I arrived.

Much of the WWII Pluto Line was created in Corby, my Dad being one of the roll turners in the steel mill, and my Mum one of the iron blast furnace brickies during the War. And Corby has its own unique Scottish accent.

Chicken Tikka is Punjabi, but Chicken Tikka Masala is said to have been invented in Glasgow when someone asked for some sauce with their Chicken Tikka. But I'm not sure that qualifies as "inventing".

Interestingly enough, northern India's favourite chicken curry, Butter Chicken which is very similar to Chicken Tikka Masala, has a similar origin story but it's based in Delhi.

AFAIK There are 2 myths about this 1) Drunk guy in Glasgow goes into Indian take away and asks for a curry, gets his curry and opens it to start eating it. Immediately he starts moaning that its not the curry he wanted. The 1 he wanted 'was more tomato'y' so the take away counter staff sent the curry back and the chef threw in a tin of Heinz tomato soup and the drunk dude loved it! 2) 2 x family run/owned restraunts in Bradford both say their family invented it. (I can remember more on this story though i did watch a light news entertainment segment on a show years ago (may be on here) with an interviewwith both Bradford family's.

Chicken tikka originated in Kashmir, chicken tikka masala apocryphally originated in Glasgow but possibly elsewhere in the U.K. or possibly Punjab or Utta Pradesh, and crisps apocryphally originated in Saratoga, New York but quite possibly in England, and the first mass produced "potato chips" were probably produced in the early 20th century in Massachusetts. I don't think any of this has anything to do with Corby.

Ah, The Sondes Arms, and to be fair Rockingham is now in the civil parish of Corby. Back in the day the Sondes served a decent pint and was a nice Sunday walkout, as was the Spread Eagle in the other direction.
