Actually, just because he said that Everest was two feet higher than what it was, there is no way to say where he added the two feet. He could, therefore, have added two feet to the bottom, just as Rich said.

Nobody has ever put any feet on top of mt Everest, since it's always covered in a couple of feet of ice and snow. Also, Everest is just what we call it. But it's been named by the locals centuries ago. The Tibetan name is Chomolungma, which means “Mother Goddess of the World.” The Nepali name is Sagarmatha, which has various meanings.

the 2' thing is just crazy enough to be true. I think we can also be safe in assuming that the Sherp's had climbed Everest long before Hillary and Norgay climbed it. Then, of course, Hillary "documented" it, solidfying his place in history. While the Sherpas continue to exclaim "what ever" Also, I did find an interview with Hillary who was asked the same (we think reasonable) question, "who actually summitted first?" His response was fascinating. He explained that when climbers climb, they are roped together for mutual safety and communication. So, when climbers summit, the entire "rope" is given credit for the summiting. The identity of the actual (first) climber is considered misleading and irrelevant.

I always assumed it was a significant digits measurement. 29,000 feet suggests you know it to the nearest 1000 feet. Adding the 2 means its accurate to a couple of feet, which is how accurate he knew it. But a decimal suggests way too fine a precision.

How do they actually measure the height though? I know it's the height above sea level, but sea level varies a lot between different parts of the globe. For example, nearby heavy ground (like continental shelves) will attract more water by gravity, which raises the sea level in that area. Rotation of the Earth is another one, sea level due to gravity is higher where the closest ocean is (the northern part of the Indian ocean) than sea level *would* be if there was an ocean where the Himalayas are. Obviously there is no ocean in the Himalayas, so you don't really know which hypothetical sea level to measure to. So how do they decide how high the "sea level" that they measure down to is?
@LuukvdHoogen
@LuukvdHoogen 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I don't know the answer. But they used to measure landsurface with triangulation, and I presume you can also make triangles to measure height and then add curvature. I know nowadays there is a sealevel by convention which smoothly covers the earth, so some sea is below sea-level by those standards.. Don't know if they knew or cared in Everest days..

@@TheDarkestSmurf Sagarmatha was coined in the 1960s and is probably a less valid name, in terms of longevity, than Everest. Qomolangma/Chomolungma is old, tho, and is actually one of the mountain's official names (for example, it's used in China, I believe). The British surveyors in the 19th century tried to use local names for mountains wherever possible, but couldn't find one that was widely enough recognized for what was then known as Peak 15, due to Nepal and Tibet not allowing foreigners entry at the time. George Everest himself opposed the name, as "Everest" couldn't be written in Hindi.

We use a combination of metric and imperial, and people who went to school pre-changeover (aka that generation up there on the panel) are more likely to use imperial for everything. It's metric for short distances but miles for long distances and mph for speed, unless you're doing height (of people or something like Everest), which is imperial. Food is weighed in grams, people are weighed in stone and pounds. Beer and milk always comes in pints, but wine will be in glasses measured by the ml.
