Qianyu Zhang is an accomplished young accordionist who has completed her Master of Arts in Performance with distinction at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She is currently pursuing her Advanced Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. She co-founded The Neuvo Tango Quintet in London and the group recently performed on BBC Radio 3 in October 2019.
Chinese-born Zhang, a talented accordionist, begun learning the accordion at the young age of four. She has had the privilege of receiving musical instruction from numerous acclaimed professors, including Professor Cao Xiaoqing, the most highly regarded accordionist in China.
During Zhang’s early years, she had the chance to compete in many domestic accordion competitions, winning many of them at national level. Later, Zhang was selected by her tutors at The Central Conservatory of Music affiliated Middle School, China’s leading secondary school of music, to compete on their behalf, placing at numerous competitions, such as the International Accordion Competition Klingenthal. In 2013, Zhang was proudly given the title “Youth Artist” by the Ministry of Culture of China.
Entering The Central Conservatory of Music in 2013, Zhang grew as a solo accordionist as well as lead member of her accordion trio group, the VIVA Accordion Trio. Continuing to win awards for her performances, VIVA won first place at the International of Accordion Competition at Harbin, with Zhang winning accordion competitions in China. In 2015, the China Golden Bell Award for Music, arguably the most prestigious music award in China, added accordion categories for the first time in its history. Zhang had the good fortune of joining twelve prominent accordionist finalists in the open category.
After graduating with a B.Mus. with Honours from The Central Conservatory of Music, Zhang also embarked and graduated with an MA in Performance at The Royal Academy of Music in London, gratefully accepting a scholarship to help support her. Studying under Professor Owen Murray, Zhang’s musicianship grew thanks to masterclasses and concert experience. More recently, she has experimented combining accordion with string music, piano, percussion music, electronic music, and voice, to form chamber music with more forms.
