To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the new China, actor Qin Junjie recorded a new rendering of the classic song “The Waves of Gulangyu” for the album “The Youth Sing for the Motherland”.
In Xiamen, “The Waves of Gulangyu” is a household song that has come to symbolize the town itself. Back in 1981, a dozen of Chinese songwriters visited Xiamen for inspiraitons to write songs on the strong kinship bond between mainland China and Taiwan, which sits on the opposite side of Xiamen across the Taiwan Strait. The songwriters of “The Waves of Gulangyu” visited the Gulangyu, an isle in Xiamen, and climbed up the Sunlight Rock - the inspiration of this song. Now “The Waves of Gulangyu” can be heard in many public places in Xiamen, and in 2007 was even proposed to be the song of Xiamen. As a native of Xiamen, Qin Junjie represented Xiamen and channelled his love for his hometown into this nostalgic song.
