Thing I love about the T34, a lot of the conscripts were farmers, who were used to driving tractors, so they designed a tank that you drove like a tractor.

I'm glad that it's not just native English speakers that tend to mangle words and names in other tongues. I'm sure Sandi could spout a mouthful of Danish to baffle me, but even her brilliance has to hesitate over those words.

I'm skeptical about setting fire to the foot of pretty short legged bird like a pigeon and it a) staying alight _while the bird is airborne_ and b) (assuming the foot _did_ stay alight) the bird being able to fly any great distance without being completely barbequed. What clearly happened was some sort of short-range, Molotov-pigeon attack that then got glamourised in the re-telling. 😏

Sandi presented the facts a bit incorrectly, they had a bag of sulfur tied to their leg by a length of leather cordage if I recall correctly, and sulfur fires are very wind resistant the birds also flew like someone lit a fire under their asses... because there was a fire under their asses

UK is steeped in Christianity culture and most folk are hailing forma Christian cultural backdrop - irrespective of their faith or lack of it. simple. either way it's all the same to me... andiamo!!!

Did any Russian peasant have any property or possessions after the revolution worth the amount a tank would cost?
@mphays

When I was stationed in West Germany in the 1980's, there was an article in a East German news paper about how some soldiers traded their tank for a couple cases of liquor. The guy that got the tank was cutting it up and selling the pieces for scrap. I can see a chick being able to raise enough for a bribe for a tank.

Pigeons are only the way they are because human cities are filthy and humans treat their environment worse than first year students treat their halls of residence. ie, shit up the walls, maggots in the sink and rotting food on the floor. Pigeons in clean, healthy environments, like anywhere where there's almost no humans, tend to be splendid, plump little birdies who're a pleasure to watch and listen to.

Interesting that Sandi says "the Ukraine", as if it's a part of another country.
@Blackfyre_93
@Blackfyre_93 Ай бұрын
I caught that too. It's worth noting that prior to the Russian invasion in 2022, it was very common in English to say "the Ukraine" when referring to Ukraine. There was just widespread ignorance as to the implications of such phraseology. As with other things (such as the spelling of the dish "Chicken Kiev", now "Chicken Kyiv" ), this has been linguistically adjusted in response to the invasion. Series R was broadcast in 2020-2021, so predated that change.
@OriginalPiMan
@OriginalPiMan Ай бұрын
I don't think "the Ukraine" implies anything like that. There is also the Netherlands, the Bahamas, and even the UK. Googled it just now and there's around a dozen countries that usually get "the" in their name, as commonly referred to.
@peterclarke7240
@peterclarke7240 Ай бұрын
You're quite right. You'll also note that the prefix "the" is only added in English translations of those countries, because they're often named after regions ("Ukraine" means "borderland" and "nederladen" means "low lands") which it would be natural in English to add the prefix "the" to. Fortunately, we're gradually learning to actually respect the names countries have officially given themselves, although it's a shame it took the invasion of Ukraina by Poo Tin for it to actually gain traction in poor old smugly ignorant blighty, given they officially change their name to "Ukraine" in 1991. Still, better late than never, I supposed...
@Blackfyre_93
@Blackfyre_93 Ай бұрын
@@OriginalPiMan The difference is "the Ukraine" - as Peter Clarke pointed out - refers to "the borderlands". That is to say, the borderlands of the Russian Empire. It implies it is a part of Russia. Hence why Ukraine prefers simply "Ukraine". It's a small difference granted, but it's not the same as the using of "the" to mark a proper noun (as in the UK). There is greater linguistic significance in the Ukrainian case.

They don't even pretend to play a game anymore. Yes I know that the score means nothing. Without the game structure, it's just five people nattering about often inane facts. Sometimes those facts aren't even factual.

@@SenselessUsername Wrong ya snarky git. I've been watching UK panel shows for decades. I am fully aware of "the format" thanks. QI has changed gradually and markedly so lately. Perhaps YOU don't recall the QI series from the past. You missed that I already acknowledged that game scoring isn't actually the main point of the show. It does lend a useful structure to the panel, however. At least it once did.
