The wave packet of an alpha particle comes from the left and goes to the right to escape the potential of the strong force of the nucleus. It then encounters the repulsive Coulomb barrier. If the wave packet would come from the right, it would be a model für nuclear fusion, just like two protons merge into a deuteron inside the sun.
