I wish I had had a video like this when I first set up my NAS back in 2014. I winged it and made some bad choices. I didn't set up a storage pool, just two drives in Raid 1. Now I'm getting ready to move my drives from a two bay to a four bay NAS and add two new drives. A new adventure that I'd like to see a video about. Thanks for this.

I finally returned to setting up my TS-451+ for a home NAS after purchasing it more than a year ago. The many failed attempts to initialize the unit at that time plus a move of residences let to an extended time on the shelf. Out of the many KZfaq videos I searched to assist in trying to restart the installation process, I found this video of yours by far the best targeted for new-to- the-QNap-NAS user and is most understandable. I look forward to viewing your subsequent videos on using the various QNap NAS features/functions. Thank you.

This video is so awesome! I wish there were such detailed guides for everything else in my life (including my life itself). I just got an excellent deal on a TS-253D-4G (US$ 330!). I was looking at the 453D, but this deal was too good to pass up, and my needs are modest and unlikely to grow significantly anytime soon. Looking forward to setting up the new NAS using your guide, and to the next videos in the series. Thank you for making it!

Mate, I’m so grateful I’ve found your channel. I live on a boat, struggled finding cctv solutions which are both local, accessible and 12v. There are no coincidences, I accidentally fell (not by accident obviously) upon you because of a Reolink review. On the basis of all I’ve learned in a couple of days, lots of viewing, I’ve ordered all I need hardware-wise to set us up…. But I’m most excited by playing with all the functionality which has nothing to do with CCTV, knowing that the cctv aspect is covered. Thanks brother…. Ts-264-8g btw. Very much appreciated and this video is super for me as I’ve not done any “p.c” build in at least 15 years… ❤

Good content takes time) and I am so grateful to have you - NASCompares ( I even went to the website to find the name of the bearded chad here, but then I started thinking that this channel is a team effort and that`s why on vids they are often refer as we and that`s why it`s important to thank NASCompares and not only the beared chad, still wanna get his name) YES THIS COMMENT IS STILL GOING STRONG, thank you again so much NASCompares for introducing me into the beautiful world of NAS. Hi Great video. I have just upgraded my TS-439 II+ to a TS-464eU rack nas. It has been rock solid for many years but need more space. Coming from firmware 4.2.6 to this new one with firmware QTS 5.1.4. And holy moly, things have changed. Its not just put in the drives and select raid 5. 1 day later and I thought I was ready to go. No there are pools and snapshots, and a lot of other things that i need to consider and need to have an opinion about. So a lot of things to google/youtube. So thanks for that video :)

Good video for the initial setup! Get it right the first time is always better. I would have thought this would have included the security console app as part of the initial setup. With recent security recommendations to change the default admin profile and initial port used to access the NAS these topic could be included in this video or future videos.

Static IP - I followed this advice when I set up both my QNAP and Synology NAS's and, if I may be so bold, it's bad advice. When I did that and later replaced my router, the new router assigned the NAS a different IP address and I could not longer access the NAS. A bit of mucking about later, I got back into communication with my NAS. I found that the better way is to assign an IP address reservation for the NAS on the router. While technically different, it appears to do the same thing although I do stand to be corrected. ( As an aside, if you have a Synology router, then your static IP address network devices won't show up in the DHCP Client List. And per emails from Synology, this is as designed, but really dumb. )
@JKWheeler
@JKWheeler 2 жыл бұрын
The option I use is to set the NAS static IP address in the router rather than on the NAS. This has worked flawlessly for me.
@DavidM2002
@DavidM2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@JKWheeler I believe that is called a Reservation. Per PC Magazine : " You can assign these static IP addresses on the device itself-using, say, Windows' network settings on each computer-or you can do it at the router level. Doing it at the router level is called assigning a DHCP reservation, though many people (and even some routers) still refer to it as a "static IP address." "
@enhncr
@enhncr Жыл бұрын
I don’t really think that you need a static IP. I’ve been using my Synology for the last 3 y with dynamic and it has always the same address. The router is prioritising a previous IP which is good.
@DavidM2002
@DavidM2002 Жыл бұрын
@@enhncr The reason to use a reservation ( or static IP if you prefer ) is, in my case, I have cameras that need to FTP their images and video to the NAS and they need an NAS IP address to do that. Otherwise, I'd be doing the same as you.

Thank you for this walkthrough! Can't overstate how helpful this channel has been. I'm now on my second server, a QNAP TS-1283XU-RP. You mentioned a later video to walk through ISCSI Targets/LUNs for Adobe users - is that out? I'd love to watch through that before setting up a new folder structure.
@spinnakervideo
@spinnakervideo 2 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to build off of this with some more specific questions. First, is there a way to migrate over to using ISCSI after I've already set up shared folders? Or are these totally separate things that would require me to build it one way or the other from the ground up? My guess is no, and that they are built differently rather than simply a different way to access the same data. Second - based on some reading, I'll need an ISCSI initiator for my Mac. A company called Studio Network Solutions (SNS) has one called globalSAN, however I'm seeing that it's not compatible with the latest generation of Apple Silicon computers (it relies on kernel extensions to function). Does this mean that ISCSI initiators won't be available, at least in the near future? My goal is to have the fastest read/write speeds for video editing in Premiere Pro.

Good video... One thing you may want an older version of the firmware is QNAP restricts you too much with "I call it spam, because I dunno another way to say it*. popup galore when you complete set up..Yes, u can suppress all of this but be prepared.... And with newer updates, it only gets worse and more restrictive... So, while you're juggling with security/privacy vs nagware........ be cautious about if that is the trade off you want Also, you didn't mention that QTS 5,x you cannot create an admin account. which is probably why you deliberately suppressed this info... Rather than letting people find out for themselves, it would have been good to have included "why you cannot" without user running into this by the "i" icon. No one likes surprises. Reason why I say this, Windows users can be admin privileges, so you can be upgrading you QNAP, and wondering why you need to create a "user" in QTS 5.x ... More info is better :)

I have some questions about optimizing my first NAS setup for my needs. QNAP TS-673 (not the "a" version). I just purchased this (used) and is not yet set up. I have 6x 6 terabyte hard drives. Three of the drives are wiped clean and ready for install. Two of them have data from my previous desktop that I used as individual JBOD type setup. The NAS has spots for two m.2 SSDs. I want to be able to run my own home lab on this with Plex, a few containers, including pie hole, maybe a Minecraft server for the family, and ability to run OwnCloud for family google photos and apple drive replacement. I plan on upgrading the memory from the stock two gigs to at least 32 gigs and maybe 64 gigs. Should I buy an SSD for the drive slot number one {1ssd &5hdd}? My assumption is that will help with performance because the system will utilize that drive slot for the OS. Combined with that, or possibly Alternatively, what can I actually do with the m.2 slots. Is that only for drive cashing? And do I have any direct control over it or will the system utilize it as it needs and I might or might not see benefits from it? Or will the speeds be just fine with the WD Red HHDs?

Hello my dear. I state that I am a neophyte and I mean in a relative way of NAS. I would like to buy one for the house to watch videos, photos and music in the family on TV, as well as other more or less sensitive data. All clearly visible even on the Internet and therefore remotely. I specify that at home I have Vodafone's FTTH fiber that as a contract tells me at 2.5 GB but that after infinite measurements with a desktop PC I don't reach more than 945 MB. I saw the TS-253 D and the newest TS-264 both at 2 bays with a certain interest. If I could give me some advice on which to take between the 2 and which hdd of 3.5 "I think of 4TB. I don't know if I will be able to complete a right configuration, so if I could help me or give me some straight on how to do to achieve the purpose. I thank you very much and sorry for the disorder. Good work. Sergio.

That's likely either an SSL certificate thing or that you are on http not https. All the NAS systems on the market will show as insecure in your browser, even on just LAN. This requires you to create an encrypted connection on the system. The browser treats the local NAS connection as if it's remote and therefore recognizes the lack of encryption

Can you create a Video that is all about connecting to the NAS? Whether on your own network but not directly attached or remotely when on another network and traveling. I have been looking for how to connect and it's been a month with my 473A and still cannot link to my desktop away from my Router and when traveling. Thanks in Advance!

This part is in the guides, part 8 or 9 I think. But it won't be published till mid Jan at least. Sorry man, I cannot publish more than a vid a day without KZfaq getting snarky

@@nascompares I completely understand with the posting schedule how hard it is! I've watched at least 50 of your videos before and after getting the 473A. Tried looking in the past two years guides but seems like I'm missing something. Not sure if it's the router configuration (already have static IP) or the other ways to connect, but need it to be a network drive since I need to be able to edit directly off it through Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve.

I’ve finally got around to getting myself a NAS (QNAP ts-853a), having looked around it seems like there’s quite a shift towards truenas/unraid, the general consensus seems to be most people are far happier using those platforms. I could set the NAS up with QTS and switch later but I’d rather just do it once, not sure whether to just stick with QTS or go straight to unraid (I’ve seen people have had success using unraid on QNAP so that’s what I was learning towards) What would you recommend for a relative beginner? NAS is a pretty standard home affair, backups / PLEX etc.

I can't for the life of me figure out the attraction to Unraid...; with so many quality free options readily available. That being said, It's hard for me to find much fault with the NAS-centric operating systems provided by Asustor, QNAP, or Synology

Hi Sir, I have a failing system volume set up as a single drive. I was told by support to migrate it to RAID1 and add a disk to mirror the data on the volume. Can this be done?

Is the data still accessible? I'd copy your data off it to an external drive as your first priority, frankly.
