Choosing the Right QNAP NAS Expansion - A Handy Guide nascompares.com/2020/04/13/qn...
QNAP has been in the business of selling Network Attached Storage Solutions for well over a decade now and has gained a huge following of home and business class hardware end users. NAS drives use a system of storage and redundancy to help keep your data safe and secure, thanks to the always evolving technology behind hard drives, SSDs and RAID systems improving year on year. However, eventually, all users will run out of available space/capacity for their data - it’s just a numbers game of how and when this will happen. Many users will take this opportunity to upgrade their NAS solution to a new server, but many have outgrown their storage space quicker than they thought, do not have the budget/inclination to upgrade completely, or just want a parallel storage expansion to extend their data (and all it’s hot mounted folders etc) onto. For those users, a NAS expansion device is exceptionally appealing and one of the key buying factors for businesses with their eyes on the future, especially rackmount users. QNAP is one of the most well equipped NAS platforms in terms of hardware that there has ever been and this is equally true in their range of expansion devices. Currently, there are around 20+ different NAS Hardware expansion units, ranging from Desktop to Rackmount, from RAID enabled to JBOD and from USB to SAS connections - each with its own Pros and Cons - which can make choosing the right one very confusing. Never fear, today I want to talk about each of the key QNAP NAS expansions and from there you should be able to select the right one for you and your data!

I'm a noob to all this and was wondering... Is there a maximum capacity to the tr-004? I was thinking about using 4 20TB HDDs but don't know if that's even possible. Thanks in advance!

Awesome video..... I just spent 5 days looking at every enclosure possible and decided on the tr-004... I'm just going to plug it directly into a server....

Great video. Thanks. I have the ts-453 bt3 which I want to attach an expansion unit to. is there an option that allows combining all disks (4+4) into a single raid 5 to increase read and write speed. ( I currently am stuggling to get 200MB/s write with ssd cache enabled) Thanks

So if you are running quts hero and want your expansion to also use ZFS then you would need to go with the sata one? My problem is I gave a ts473a, which I wish was more powerful. Half of me just wants to get a new Nas. Not sure about this ryzen v1500b. I don't know.

so i was planning to use the TR-004 with my mini pc not a NAS cause i dont have one but i wanted to use the 004 with 4x 8tb ironwolf nas drives i dont super care about speed as its only purpose is for a plex server, so will the speed matter there? as the only real time i have to transfer is when adding new media, and that does not nececarily need to be fast and im assuming acessing the media and streaming via plex wont saturate that limit, tho do correct me on that if im wrong

I probably wont get an answer to this, but Ill ask anyway. I have it set to hardware RAID1 with only two drives so I have the option to add two additional drives down the line. However, I would like to know if I add the two drives of the same size, will they automatically be configured to RAID1 or will it wipe out my existing array? This is extremely important!

Useful, thanks. I have a QNAP TS-251b NAS with two 10TB drives in it, which I use for movies (using Plex) and for photo/video editing. I need to expand and was looking at the TR-004 and TL-D400s. I'm assuming the latter is my best option? Is it easy to set up with the TS-251b?

Interested by the TR-004, (for DAS and not expansion) I saw that there's newer model with USB 3.2, but in my area there's only the USB 3.0 models, worth to wait ?

TR-004 has USB 3.2 gen 1 only!! It's 5Gbps = 625MB/s not 500... Benefit of the USB version of QNAP TR is that you can connect to anything (PC, Macbook....), TL-400S is more "powerfull" but is just desktop solution for PC (because of SATA PCI-E card) Interesting is, that 2 slot version QNAP has USB 3.2 gen 2 10Gbps :D

I was under the impression the QNAP TR-004 maxed out at SATA II speeds of 3/gbps with the 5/gbps max transfer potential with raid 0.

Can the TR-004 do 2 diff RAID1 setups? I have some unused old drives (2 x 4TB & 2 x 2TB). Can I run the 4TB in a mirror the 2TB in a separate mirror for a total of 6TB?
@zeniktorres4320
@zeniktorres4320 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe it can. But I'm not sure if you can do that by setting to RAID 10 (when you install the 4 drives) using the DIP switches, or, that you need to use the Qnap software on a PC to do it. Anyway you test that yourself.

@@carlosgouveia I've literally only just heard about DAS' for the first time tonight. Just stumbled across your comment. Yeah looks like you can use them as NAS expansion or as standalone USB Raid storage. I'm looking at getting one and then using backblaze since backblaze will backup your pc & any usb devices attached. Since the DAS (at least in RAID setup) will show as one usb device you can use the backblaze personal plan and get unlimited online backup for a really good price. The backblaze NAS plan is a lot more expensive.
