This is one of my favorite brands! I love how easy they are to rewet. And yes--they are more expensive to buy, however you will quickly find that you are using far less of these than of other premium watercolors. As Jay mentioned they can get a lot more pigment into a tube because they need less binder with aquazol than traditional gum arabic. Beautiful sample painting, Jay!

Thank you Jennifer. I love them too, and i think I'm gonna get more inlove when I get to experience their versions of my favorite pigments like PR101, PB36, PB28, PG26, PV49, PG50 and PR108. Those are cobalts and they're heavy in other pigments. Im curious kn how they're gonna move when mixed with Aquazol. 😍🎨🙏

I do a dispersion test with every color I buy or trade for so I'll check my notes and let you know how it compared. I got a similar set to yours 2-3 years ago (I think the selection has changed since I got mine) and I got the bright colors set. I definitely want to get more of their colors. If Golden says a version of a pigment they offer is lightfast, then it's lightfast. They hired the ASTM to redo the tests for them, for every specific pigment they offer, in particular. And yes, the same pigment code, when made from a different brand can range drastically in stability, especially regarding the modern pigments. So yes, shame to D.S. for mislabeling his products, but the entire Qor line was tested from scratch, so you should use them without second thoughts (and I say it without using them cause they are not readily available where I live).
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 3 жыл бұрын
It is possible that Golden's Qor uses a uniquely lightfast version of PR177 pigment that no other brand has. They are a very trustworthy company about lightfast testing. Though I feel I should mention that sometimes they have admitted that batch to batch things change and sometimes a single test is in error. When picking out a lemon yellow for a palette I was researching PY3 lightfast issues and stumbled onto Golden's blog explaining how sometimes even their own paints are lightfast in one batch but not the next. They decided to add PY175 and I54 as alternatives in their acrylic line and re-label the PY3 from Lightfast to only "Fair" later on. It's admirable that they wanted to make it right, but I think it's a good example of why a second thought (and your own testing for peace of mind) is always a good thing no matter which brand. www.justpaint.org/hansa-update/

@AllanJayQuesada 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @DrPhilologist. Thank you for sharing those info. It really makes sense why a specific pigment performs differently depending on source and manufaturers. There are many factors. But i think for Pr177, one thing's for sure.. that It is not as consistent as the Pigments like PB29, PBk9 and PBr7 which are excellent in lightfastness all the time, across brands.. ASTM should really be consistently retesting pigments brand by brand from time to time as a basis of quality for Brand's reliable marketing.. but of course, they're a group that needs to be paid so it's not gonna be easy for all at a regular basis..
@DrPhilologist

@@KimberlyCrick This stands true with almost every pigment, actually. There are cases where ultramarine and quin. rose have faded in a 6 month test. The only truly impervious colours are cadmiums, iron oxides and cobalt's of the blue-green spectrum.
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 жыл бұрын
@@KimberlyCrick thank you for sharing a bunch of info, and also for sharing your test on Moonglow, (which facts broke my heart 😆) but i need those facts so, thank you. Yes i agree, no other proof to satisfy our needs than to be doing our own tests. If one needs to be sure his buying the most lightfast pigments, but cant do his tests yet, i guess it is safer to focus on pigments that are more consistent across brands or resesrch thoroughly well. 🎨🙏
@DrPhilologist
@DrPhilologist 3 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada See my previous answer Allan: pb29 has been noted to fade in some cases, pv19 has done the same and the list goes on and on. If you want only 100% permanent colours, you should limit yourself to cadmiums (all except cadmium lemon), cobalts (except aureolin) and iron oxides. And blacks of course. Every other pigment, especially the organic ones, will fade on occasion, some faster than the rest. This is the point of having multiple degrees of lightfastness (#6-8 in the scale), after all. Yes, pr177 is not as consistent as pb29, but pb29 itself is not as consistent as pr108 and sometimes it will do as poorly as a pr177. A good pr177 is a rare thing but when it is a good pr177 it is as good as a pv19, that's what I'm saying.

I had heard about regular alizarin crimson lightfast failure but not the permanent quinacridone kind. DaVinci 's permanent alizarin crimson is my absolute favorite of all. For me QOR didn't mix well or play well with my other professional palettes. I myself don't know if I am a fan of the binder and the mix it goes. If I need to thin out a pigment usually I use the ox gall. And Hansa yellow is questionable too. I love the nickel azo and burnt orange to make quin gold. A couple of favorites. Thank you again. Beautiful paintings.🤗

Hi Jennie. I have heard varying expereince about PR177, so that now makes me realize that that colors' permanence may depend on manufacturer. Own testings will only satisfy own needs i think. Qor i think would be better used by itself (as j dont normally mix brands btw) as qor has distinction to movement, but maybe there are certain styles where mixing can work. Thanks for another great review, Allan! I'll copy paste what I wrote as an answer to another comment 😊: I did a lightfastness test this summer with all of my paints, including the 24 set from QoR (plus Indian yellow). They hung for four months in a southwest-facing window, it's not sun all day long there, but I do live in Sweden so the sun sets later than in more southern places. The QoR paints were seriously impressive since none of them showed signs of fading or changing hue, including PR177. I don't know that I would fully trust that result over time, it is a fairly short home test after all. (I'll probably put it up again next summer.) But it did hold up better than the W&N Permanent Alizarin Crimson in my test.
@AllanJayQuesada

Wow Hannag. Thank you for sharing your test. This gives how relief. I have read from other artists that QOr really is emphasizing efforts to ensure their colors are lightfast so that's really a great thing. I hope the PR177 of DS is as lightfast too. 🙏🎨

@@AllanJayQuesada I doubt DS is as lightfast, but I have only tested their Permanent Alizarin Crimson which becomes very much duller. But I suppose that could possibly also be because if PR149, which I don't really know much about, including how lightfast it's supposed to be. Seems like DS Anthraquinoid Red, on the website sunandcolors.com, at least becomes slightly duller. I'm kind of excited to see how the QoR colors hold up over time! I got a set of 6 that I got to pick from a limited color pool from Artsnacks, and I have to say it was one of the best buys ever. My set is kinda weird but somehow better than the normal split primary sets always given as introductory sets. It was like $35 so it definitely would've been better to just get the $50 intro set, but I just wasnt sure about dropping so much lol (the set I got also came with an awesome paint brush that I always use!) I'm glad to see you review these since i have fallen so deeply in love with this brand!

35usd with a useful brush is not totally bad at all! Is the brush a promotional offer packed by the store with the qor set? I think, the 6 color set you got is the one with primaries and a brown, right? Maybe you can add another 6, the high chroma set unless you're not after very lively colors. 🙏🏻😉🎨
@trishakhat1703
@trishakhat1703 3 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada The entire set with the brush was a limited time promotional event, so they don't really sell qor sets usually. I went through and checked which colors I got and I actually have 4 of the chroma colors lol. I got to choose, so I went with an almost split primary set: phthalo blue gs, cadmium yellow primrose, quin magenta, and quin gold to be an extra warm yellow and to be my "brown" color. I also have cobalt teal for more options for greens and bc I love teal so much. And to offset the fact that I didn't have a real warm blue I got dioxazine purple which I love. The phthalo blue, quin mag, and cad yellow are pretty standard, but I wanted the other 3 to be kinda weird so I could have a fun and useful palette. The cobalt blue and quin gold are the best parts of this set imo. I don't like those warm yellows that are just the slightest bit different from the cool version, so I reach for dark golden colors instead.

Excellent video my friend! I completely agree with your review and I'm so happy you mentioned the lightfastness of PR177 I'm still so sad about my moon glow, I've been mixing it now with winsor newton's permanent alizarin crimson, and Daniel smiths quin coral depending what hue I'm looking for in the separation. Also I never use PG7, I prefer pg18 too, I love the granulation and that it's a little softer. Pg18 is one of my favourite mixers. I've recently added Qor Cobalt Violet to my new ceramic palette, my original favourite cobalt V is Holbeins, but she's pricey here in Canada, the most expensive of all cobalt violets accross every brand but worth it, I was using daniel smiths because its a more pinkish hue but it was too weak, the qors is stronger with the same pv49 hue and more potent so its my current favourite. Qor is pricey here too with those 11 ml tubes lol I have a few winsor newton's I cannot part with because they are such clean mixtures that I find other brands don't compare, cerulean blue pb35 is one of them, winsor red pyrole pr254 is another, permanent rose PV19 because its a warmer hue that I haven't found in other brands and permanent magenta PR122 and permanent alizarin crimson which winsor newton's is single pigment pr206 which so far I'm finding the closest to the original, mgraham has some good ones but the honey based paint never fully dries here so I always pass on it and sennelier, both beautiful but too runny here in my climate to take outside of the studio. The rest of mine are Daniel smith which same as you I love the range, granulation and character of them, there only a few pigments I go elsewhere for. This was an excellent review my friend, it excited me and I believe your audience will find the same. Love to you from Canada my friend and much love and happy thanksgiving (its ours here in Canada this weekend so blessings to you and your family) xoxo

Oh, I highly recommend W&N Cobalt Violet! (The pan version!) It's wonderful and pack's a punch compared to others! Rembrandt's cobalt violet is also nice. I've only tried the tube version. It's slightly warmer, less pigmented and tends to separate in the tube, but perhaps the pans are better? Still, it rewets nicely and is a cheaper option. But I really hope I can inspire you to try W&N! 😊

Just got a quarter pan...it is lovely ,closest to my blues would be m.graham anthraquinone but not in the mass tone. In a light wash it is closest. And is a beautiful vibrant blue. PB86, I thiink, is the pigment color.i don't know the manufacturer of my sample..,but it is unlike any blue I have....and I have just about a all except for Bloxx and PWC....

I am also very willing to have rhat yin mn color. I love warm blues. Watching rhe videos, i thought it was closer to french ulttamarine and cobalt blue deep. Anyways, i love the shade. I believe, Kremer also has it.

Your reviews are always top! Thank you so much I was very curious about them but unless I get rich I don’t think I would buy them, even less after testing Mijello and Holbein, I thought that great flow meant great smoothness but as your swatches shows they aren’t necessarily related, may I ask which brand in your experience is the most smooth? I tend to prefer no texture at all for my illustrations.
@AllanJayQuesada

Hi Nikki Draven. I think the quick flow of QOr is not a cherry non top for me because i always do technical works for my day job.. and for that, i manage my strokes and details. So flow isnt the most important thing to me. If youve tried mission gold, i think it's a step better at some point. I think the smoothest, most buttery is the Schmincke. Slight compromise on vibrance (comparing to qor and mission gold) but are still vibrant though. Schmincke is loved by many because of it's smoothness. Ultramarine is usually granulating, but Schmincke is able to make a version that is almost texture free, rhe Ultramarine Finest. So, there.. im still to review the Schmincke paints, but ive used them for 2 yrs now. 😉🎨🙏

@@AllanJayQuesada thank you sir! I have three colors from schmincke also posted a review today as I wanted to have deeper confidence with that paint, I was considering also inks like ecoline supposing dye based paints made perfect washes almost like digital work, but I think you should give up on lightfastness and that‘s a compromise not always possible

@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 жыл бұрын
Hahah. Im not a fan of Phthalo blue too, but just like the PE class that I hated, i felt the need to always have it. PB60 is also not a usual color but i see where you're coming from in loving it. It can really make moody landscapes, atmospheric skies, and deep greens and purples. I have once made a triad using PY150, PB60 and PR264 🎨🙏🏻😉

Hi Allan great review and demo of the paints in action. Have you tried M Graham paints yet ? I have a few Holbein, they do hold their colour, but they dont mix and flow like traditional watercolours, they are more for illustration than landscapes. I also feel that Qor have a more natural colour, bright is okay, but in some cases Mission Gold , and other very vibrant colour do not look realistic to life as they are too bright.
@AllanJayQuesada

Hii. Yes, i have used MGraham in some of my floral, landscape and Portrait demonstrations here. Please check them out. 🙏 i have all the 70 colors of Mgraham. That speaks of how I love Mgraham. ❤️ but the review is yet to be made. 🎨 yeah i agree that the best paints for realism are some less vibrant colors.. mission gold may be used but needs tiny bit more effort to tone colors down. 😊

They are so expensive and the tubes are so small. As someone who doesn't live in the USA these are even pricier. Beautiful paints, but I would rather buy Mijello, they are more affordable where I live and they are just as vibrant.
@AllanJayQuesada

I agree. And the Mijello paints at some point are even more vibrant than QOR in my opinion. Yes, vibrance is not everything, and so as the flow.. so factors need to be gauged and in this case, rhe price as a good measuring point. 😉

The price of the qor 6 colors 5ml at JacksonArt is close to their Daniel Smith essentials set with same 6 colors 5ml.. and yes, the shipping fee is high. For items to be shipped to the Philippines, DHL shipping costs 2600 or roughly 53 usd.

Truthfully, I'd appreciate the ability of QOR watercolors to move so evenly and flow so well, but, as someone who want to set their paint in a specific way and in a specific manner, I might just end up getting an unwanted effect of flow. So I think QOR is not questionable in terms of quality, but rather on personal preference.
@AllanJayQuesada

definitely agree, Rhean. While I still find Qor's flow to be manageable, I would be more comfortable still using paints that dont flow as fast. 🎨😉

There are lots of great paints that can match or even surpass DS if we look only at the basic colors.. but i think 3 of the reasons why many artists put DS on top is its 1. Range & 2. Unique granulation in select pigments. 3. Special paints using minerals and gems. 🎨 That painting using mission gold stood out because of the Yellow I used. I love PY150. It's my top Yellow color. ☺️

RFLMAO 😂😂 Moonglow is in the hot seat 🔥 for the lightfastness (or lack there of) I'm a whistleblower federal investigator putting all of Epsteins corporate partners-in-crime, including the stockholders in both major U.S. parties, in the hot seat via special prosecutors so that was just priceless! 🏆 🥉 I'm about to invest in my first professional grade paints. I love DS, but I just can't support the company after the Moonglow & their so-called natural pigments line revelations.

Yeah, it's disappointing, esp the Moonglow. It was once my favorite. They could've used another red for better lightfastness. For an alternative, they have Shadow Violet. The issue on the primateks was also sad. I hope they had issued a better explanation re the matter or addressed the issue through revising their products.
