The Safariland UBL (Universal Belt Loop) has been the dominant player in the holster platform space for as long as most of us can remember. Safariland is the original innovator in the space, so this is understandable. Holster platforms and hangers are a critical part of setting up a proper duty belt or range belt, yet they have not seen a ton of innovation in terms of design and engineering until recently with the release of the True North Concepts MHA (Modular Holster Adapter).
But, as we all know, new isn’t always better. Today, we take a deep dive into both the Safariland UBL and the True North Concepts MHA to compare them across eight different categories to help you figure out the best option for your setup and your application here on INSIGHTS by Qore Performance®.

Wow! You managed to make an "all in one" video and explained it in more depth and faster than ANYONE at my local gun store. (not knocking them, but let's be real, this is a niche market) With that said, as a retired professional drummer, I understand that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Some brands "claim" that they have ALL the solutions...in my experience this is NEVER true. I am new to this world of never ending acronyms and am tired of cheap companies trying to sell me shit that I have to keep returning. Thank you for helping on my quest to find the equipment that suits me!

Great video! You covered a lot of ground in 20 minutes and was well presented. Over the last 40 years I've collected every Safariland mount you've shown, and then some. They're all now in my big holster box in the attic. For me, the True North MHA has beat Safariland hands down for six months now being worn four to seven days a week and eight to twelve hours per day! Not even a hint of hot spot problems so far and I haven't had a need for a leg strap with the MHA. Keep up the good work!

I recently picked up the true north concepts in odg. And it’s fantastic. It LOCKS in place and doesn’t move at all like the ubl did I used zip ties to attempt to keep the ubl in place. But the true north has so many beneficial features. Which is why I made the switch and I am genuinely thankful that I did. I also was able to create a negative cant for a better draw

I run UBLs. I have both long and medium that I use for different assignments. I also have a Safariland small drop leg that sees use on specific assignments. I use QLS adapters for each UBL, and I have a female QLS mounted horizontally on the left side of my armor carrier. Why? A holster mounted in the traditional location, but on a UBL pushes the business end deep into your vehicle seat, thus compromising the material and padding below, and, due to resistance, pushing your body into imbalance. Those of us that do the job tend to retire with enough health issues as it is, I see no reason to add more. Now, my pistol is at hand height while driving, and can be moved to traditional location in less time than it takes to get out of my seat belt. I have the MHA set up for other work, with an entirely different type of belt set up. No issues to report, that I did not already anticipate. Like most things in the realm of gunfighting equipment, there is no one answer. I have a box with well over $1000 worth of Milt Spark holsters and belts from 20+ years ago when I first started carrying 1911s daily. Today, I have added to that box, a room full of vests, belts, adapters and do-hickeys that have all been given a fair shot at the starting lineup. Some were starters - champions even. But as they aged, other products were brought to market and did something a little bit better. There is no one answer. There is no free lunch. You have to open your wallet. Then you have to open your calendar. Spend the money and the time to give yourself the best chance to be the best you.

I tried using the MHA for a while. It's a nice piece although I ended up getting rid of it and switched to using a CUBL. The MHA is infinitely more uncomfortable than the CUBL for me, and I also found the amount of customization on the MHA to essentially he worthless, since most people will simply find the exact setup that works for them and then never touch it again.

I'm using ANR design holster mount (standard non short model). It Solves 3 problems which are the slopness of oversized belt loop of normal UBL to fit large belts (the ANR is made to fit either 1.5" or 1.75" belts), it is Cantable, it is also slightly lower than Mid ride (I am not sure if it is about the same as Low Ride UBL as i don't have low ride). I did add the Qore performance Aero holster pad to it, No real hot spots, but still testing it out.

Very good comparison vid bud. I am building my first battle-belt and have found the whole ordeal very daunting. I'm not a competition guy or a military guy so my knowledge on the subject is limited. I'm also Canadian so finding peers with this train of thought is near impossible. Lol. I just believe a fella should be able to protect his family if it came down to it and having a rig that can actually hold all your gear rather than stuffing pistols and mags in pockets and waistbands.... is a good idea. It's a quick grab-&-go deal. I have spent weeks trying to figure out what to buy and I have it all figured out. I have a CZ Shadow 2 and for its configuration I'm going with the Blue Alpha Battle Belt Lite, a Redhill Tactical Level 2 holster, True North MHA, and the Safariland QLS kit. I also have a Spartan Difensa coming with both the leather and kydex sheath. I was going to get Esstac Kiwi mag pouches for my CZ mags but the buggers don't make them.... so I am still on the hunt for mag pouches. This gear is pricey but it's definitely fun and enlightening building a kit!

I switched to the MHA from the UBL. I like the adjustability and stiffness of metal vs plastic (less flipping). The only issue I’ve had is the metal presses against the rivets on my jeans making things uncomfortable. Similar to their holster pad, I got the Shaw concepts pad because it has a built it leg strap. Once installed, the MHA is pretty much perfect.

@@QorePerformanceUSA After watching your video and reading the comments, it seems the TNC MHA is a better choice for range commando's. not those who are out on the beat. Hope to see Safariland address the belt attachment limitations along the way TNC MHA and Blackhawk holsters have. Couldn’t agree more. After spending nearly a year in the MHA, we’ve now gone back to exactly the setup you are describing: high ride UBL. RDR gear makes a SAFARILAND UBL BELT WIDTH MODIFICATION that you clip onto the back of your UBL. It’s like $15 and works pretty good. Nice review ,good points,well put together. MHA for me, with some sort of padding underneath,because it's chewing thru the pants material. As for moving with it, if it's on the exterior of the thigh, it doesn't bother me,if i put it in front of the thigh,in a sort of slight 14 a clock position,then yes ,it's rubbing and kind of impedes in some movements. (did you ever sustained a left shoulder injury or something? your constantly moving your left shoulder upwards)

I noticed that for the price of the safariland cost analysis you chose to add up the UBL, VUBL, QSL, FORK, CUBL DFA, and leg strap vs the True north concepts you only took into consideration the MHA and the leg strap, which begs me to ask how am i going to quickly connect and remove my gun with the holster (If i don't have the fork that safariland sells) if that wasn't included in the cost analysis. Out of curiosity which Safariland is able to accommodate a Glock with an Acro P2? My safariland will fit my G19 w/ Acro, but the optic hood will not fold all the way over the optic like seen in this video.

I’m a cop in Thailand. The prices of these stuffs are 2-3 times more expensive than in the US😢 And it’s soooo hot here, heat is the big problem. Really need those pads, it would be a lot more comfortable to me. But thing is i don’t know where to buy it here and buying things from oversea is a bit too complicated for me

Hi - while we do not yet have a distributor in Thailand, we do have distributors in Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. The shipping might be easier from those countries if you’d like to give it a try. Otherwise, please feel free to email info [at] Qore Performance [dot] com with all of your shipping information as well as the exact products you’d like to purchase from us. We can then email you back some customized shipping options for your specific order. Hope that helps! #StayFrosty

Possibly. Depends on demand. This is the first mention we’ve even seen of that product, so it may not have the demand/volume we need to build a dedicated ICEVENTS® solution for it.

@@QorePerformanceUSA very understandable. But maybe a set of various sized ice vents for custom use could be a feasible idea. Or maybe i'll just buy a similar sized ice vent and go to town on it with a pair of scissors and duct tape...

How does the MHA do with sitting though? I plan on running a drop leg with a strap and Thats the one thing I keep coming back to because it looks so rigid. If youre running and gunnin', bending, standing and everything in between; how is this thing with a leg strap attached if youre on one knee?? Thats what I wish was in the video.
@QorePerformanceUSA

Honestly, not great. We basically don’t run the MHA anymore for a number of reasons that we’ll cover in a 2023 update to this video. It basically comes down to too much metal that you don’t/can’t use, but still have to carry around and gets in the way. We now run UBLs exclusively on all team belts at the shop and have been for some time.

As we mentioned in the video, we DEFINITELY recommend one of the Safariland UBL variants/family members over the True North MHA for work/duty applications. No question. The weight alone plus muscle memory best practices/training doctrine only reinforce why we feel the MHA is only good for square range/training applications. Modularity is a fleeting mistress, but weight has a permanence which is best respected.

Been running the UBL for a few years and IMO it’s sub par. The rounded bottom end digs into the leg with or without a leg strap, and it naturally tips the gun handle out away from the body. SL should have just made it kin line with the leg. Just decided to put out the money for the True North.

I like my drop leg but cant for duty so I run a lowride, only downside is sitting (depending on your holster length) pushing the top of the ubl into my hip at time and hurting like hell over time. And that mha looks like it would to it even worse.

For any real duty belts i really think a safariland UBL is still best ik a lot of ppl I work with use QLS sets , im sure they are good but anything that is a moving part will eventually fail regardless of how well made , I feel adding a possible failure point to a duty weapon setting is not super wise

The MHA is brilliant in its versatility but there’s a huge difference and thus problem between it and the UBL. The MHA I straight. Most people’s bodies aren’t. If you did all chest and arms for the chics and skipped leg days great but for me at 6’6” 280 it didn’t work. The can’t of the MHA was always away from the body at the bottom. I tried using spacers at the top that TNC even sent me for free but it’s just awkward so unless I use a tourniquet as a leg strap it’s never parallel with my body. I switched back to the UBL mid ride and might even bump that up to a standard ride because I hate leg straps. They don’t play well with shorts. I’d definitely say try it cause if it works you’re golden. If safariland could just make the UBL not paddle sized that would work too. Safariland or someone needs to create a curved UBL you can bolt to a teklok. Lose the loops. Problem solved except the thigh strap.
@Thuggle_Bus
@Thuggle_Bus Жыл бұрын
My biggest reason for using the MHA is that i like thigh straps and can get them to ride a little lower and minimize the crotch wedgie factor. I would switch back to the UBL if anybody out there knows of a nifty little thigh strap extension piece i can pick up. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!
