Houdini saves cache files, crash logs and crash rescue files in a folder inside your system drive called "HOUDINI_TEMP". In this video I show you how to easily change where this folder is created and prevent your system drive from getting bogged down with these temporary files.

As a side note for PC users, at the beginning the "AppData" folder is also a hidden folder, so you need to open a file tab > View > Options > View > Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" > Apply > OK. Then you have access. Just a note, it is advised you reverse this process once finished as hidden files are hidden for a reason.

Hi I'm trying to install Houdini 18.5 on Mac and first step is to Unzip and unrar to a temp directory (does it mean I need to copy the Houdini zip file to the TMP folder and then unzip it there?) I´ve tried that but I get error "(no mountable file systems") what do I miss? thx in advance.

I think you're overthinking it. Download the Houdini installer from SideFX, unzip it from whatever directory the file downloaded in (either your Downloads folder or the desktop), then mount the resulting Image file (.dmg), double click the Houdini installer app and follow the onscreen instructions for the rest of the install. The installer will take care of the rest.

is there a way to have 3delight not make these tmp files?
@RightBrainedTutorials
@RightBrainedTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
They're working on it, in the sense that an upcoming version of 3Delight will automagically delete the files as soon as it's done with them. To a certain degree all renderers do this, but for some reason 3Delight doesn't delete the files until the entire render is finished. In the case of a single image this is not a big deal, but in the case of an extended sequence, this can add up to a lot of drive space.

@@RightBrainedTutorials thanks for the quick reply. Yeah I'm rendering a heavy scene(400 frames) and I'm getting a 5gb tmp file for each frame...hope they fix this issue soon.
