In this video we will be answering “what is the Quad Helix expander and what is it used for?”
The Quad Helix is an expander that is cemented to your upper teeth that can be used to increase the width of the upper teeth, preserve space, make room for crowded teeth, or a combination of the above. This expander is cemented and delivers a very light force over a long period of time that is ideal for dental expansion but not as optimal for skeletal expansion as the Hyrax, or other similar expanders. It has four helix loops which allow for the expander to deliver the light force that it does over a long period of time.

i had mine for a good 8 months i think. it was in for so long i forgot it was there 😂 a couple of days ago mine got taken out and it felt so weird. there was so much space in my mouth. i used it to help me break up food when my braces hurt and now i can't 😭

Thank you so much for this video been waiting for it since last year 😊 i start wearing the expander since march 2019 to may 2019 and last two week i start wearing braces but my doctor still kept the expander inside my mouth as an anchor. I just want to share that it is very hurt went the doctor take off the expander 😂😂

I just got a quad helix 3 days ago and I have a sore on the roof of my mouth where one of the loops is and it’s painful at first I thought it was digging into my mouth but it’s a sore help?!?!

I have the quad helix expander but it doesn't look like the ones in the video. It looks more like a w and then two arms on each side Once the appliance is removed how will my mouth know to stay out and not move back to it's original shape? Once the brackets are added does that help maintain shape?

My daughter has a quad Helix. The first 48 hours she had a mild lisp. The only complaint she has is if certain foods get caught in it, it annoys her. I couldn't believe the difference it made to her smile even after just 3 weeks and she is smiling more too. She has had it 12 weeks now and will have her braces put on this week for about a year and that will her done. All before she turns 13.

I love your content Dr Greg! I'm four months into my orthodontic treatment and I notice that there's not much movement that has happened over the past 2 months as compared to my first two months of treatment, where I saw MASSIVE improvement. My dentist has been reusing my wires, I'm curious to know, could this be the reason why it's slowed down?

The initial stages are where you notice most of your changes. As we move further along, the changes are significant but a lot more subtle. Your orthodontist can often answer what teeth will be targeted to move in the next month or so if you ask =]

There are a bunch of different types of open bites and the way to treat them is based on the etiology - i would suggest you see a local orthodontist for a consultation and see what he/she say after taking a look at your case

I just got my quad helix expander put in today and I am having a hard time trying to not hit the wires with my tongue as it does hit it quite a bit. Its also been tough to eat as basically everything gets stuck in the wires and cables so I have been just having smoothies all day and perhaps some porridge. I would like to know some tips to make it easier as it is pretty rough

Hey there Dr. Greg I was wondering about retainers - I watched your video on them but have a question still !?! - what are your thoughts on mail order retainers? I have seen that there are companies that you can go through to get Hawley retainers. I'm a long time wearer (22 years now) of this type but I do not have a orthodontist. My husband and i move a fair ammount making it a bit difficult to keep one specific orthodontist. I still wear my original top one but it is unfortunately chipping away arround the edges now and my bottom one I no longer have (I misplaced it after I had dental work done and it did not fit after the work was done) if I had a bottom one I for sure would wear it! Thank you for your insight and help on this!

My stance is that I am against anything that isn't performed / checked by an orthodontist. I mean even a minor change in the plastic of a "retainer" can cause tooth movement, right? That's the whole premise of how invisalign and other aligners work. If you call your orthodontist he/she can recommend a colleague that is near you!

Hi Dr. Greg! What is an inverted vector wire for? I had them for my lower teeth yesterday...is it a form of detailing wire bend? And my ortho also suggested that I get a splint. Is it like the nance appliance? Sorry for all these questions. Hehe. :)

Hmm not sure what an inverted vector wire is. A splint is more like a bite plate that disarticulates your bite to see where your true bite positiotn is

You cannot skeletally expand a lower arch but there are a number of appliances that I can review in future videos that can be used for expanding the lower =]

Hey wanted to come back and give you an update about my braces. I got them 4/8/19 and the 1st 10days was pretty hectic. But. Now I’m use to them and enjoy them. I can see my teeth improving already. Plus my teeth hurt a little, I guess it’s because there already shifting. Also I have to have surgery in September to get my gum between my gap removed and one baby tooth pulled. Hopefully it’s not that bad. Will I be in pain with the gum removal??

Hi Lilly! Great question. A retainer is passive and causes no movement whereas an invisible aligner causes forces to move teeth in a particular direction

I’ve been in braces since April 2018, very very narrow arches. There has been quite a bit of arch expansion but I feel like it’s stalled. Wondering why my ortho never mentioned this to me? It’s hard to trust the process sometimes 😭

I would trust your orthodontist. We dont mention things that won't work in your case so I believe he/she would have reason to not mention it!

Have some pain medication a couple of hours after you leave the ortho on day one. That's when the pain is at its worst. Buy some interdental tooth brushes, and threaded floss. If you can, get a Waterpik, makes flossing easier. Brush after every meal if you can. And make flossing a daily thing, it quickly becomes a habit...Oh! and get the tiny interndental flossers as well, they do come in handy when you've got food stuck in your teeth. Don't eat anything that requires biting into, like apples. I usually chop them up into cubes and eat them that way. Nuts aren't very good with braces either.

@@dirt_on_mars my glue is blue, and in the beginning the glue would fall/peel off, you can try to take a mirror for a closer look? If it dosen't work just call your dentist, they wont be mad

Iv had for 3 days. Cutting my tounge. Iv pushed cotton wool in routh of mouth to cover the metal wires.

Margelin Liriano Your whole life. Once you get them off, they tell you how long you have to wear them all day and night. But afterwards you have to wear them every single night.

@@sabrinao5958 3 ys is to avoid recidive (i guess in english thats the word). But teeth moves all life, so the more you wear the best it is.

i can’t even bite!! it’s just like “ owe!!!!” or my tongue always gets cut on it. and sometimes like if i push it bends back and forth is that normal??

It’s Aaliyah okay trust me on this, after a week or so you will be fine. no more sensitive teeth or cuts, just brush your tongue when you brush your teeth! it will get better.
