MCrider - Motorcycle Training

Күн бұрын

This week on MCrider we look at a service bulletin released by Apple about smartphone damage that occurs from mounting a phone to the handlebars. I talk about how using my smartphone on my motorcycle destroyed the camera, and I review one solution that has worked well for me from the Quad Lock Vibration Dampener.
Here are links to the products used in this video. If you have a Quad Lock mount already you can likely add the Vibration dampener to your set up and that is all you would need.
If you are starting fresh like I was, you will need at a minimum the Case, Vibration Dampener, and the Mount. You can also add the Waterproof Charger to this setup and I think it makes it much more convenient.

Thank you Kevin for all that you do. I don't ever have any electronic distractions on my road bikes, but this may help someone. I truly believe that I lost a new smart phone 3 years ago from the high frequency while T.I.G. welding the engine mounting plate on my drag bike. It was a expensive lesson, but I'm grateful for the lesson learned. Hopefully I can help someone else. Now when I weld any material I make sure that my smart phone is off, as well as far away from my welding power source. GOD BLESS YOU SIR.

Great solution. I had the same mount you were previously using and broke three iPhones in four months this year mounted on my BMW R9T (all under warranty). The article from Apple came out about a month after I was onto phone number four and I had switched mounts. I received the famous customer service line “I’ve never seen that before”, but I guess they had.

Kevin, I appreciate all your tips and helpful suggestions, but I wanted to pass along my experience using the new Quad Lock solution. Initially, I had my iPhone XS mounted on the Indian-supplied Rokform console mount for my Roadmaster for several years without issue. But in Oct of 2020, the camera lost the ability to focus while riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not knowing why, I let Apple fix it, and moved on. In May of 2021, I decided to install Rokform rigid handlebar mount on my DRZ400. The engine and/or road vibration killed the focus after only 2 hours on only paved roads. That's when I found out about the vibration issue. Based on that Quad Lock graph and their claims, I bought two Quad Lock mounts for both bikes in June, got my phone fixed and had no issues using it all summer on my Roadmaster. However, I just went on a trip to the Smoky Mountains with my DRZ and the new Quad Lock, riding only paved and some excellent forest service roads. The autofocus went out on day two (strike #3). I think the Quad Lock is a reasonable option for 2+ cylinder bikes on the highway, but as far as I'm concerned, only your pocket or on top of a tank bag is an option for off-road use, especially for a thumper bike. As far as what are killer bikes, I think ANY motorcycle or even a mountain bike ridden on trails or poor roads can damage the delicate autofocus or image stabilization of a modern phone. The Quad Lock is like a helmet, better than nothing. My two cents.

I know this is an old post but in just curious, have you used a Qual lock dampener when that happened? Got my quad lock and have also bought a dampener. After reading your post in now hesitant to put my iPhone 13 in there.
@BillSmith-qj1md
@BillSmith-qj1md Жыл бұрын
@@ImALefty08 sorry that I wasn’t clear, but the quad-lock claims I was referring to was with the dampener, which I had on both bikes. They don’t solve the vibration issues on thumpers or rough/off-road. I’ve had no issues on my touring bike with the quad lock and iPhone XS. If you can see or feel the phone vibrate at all, it will destroy the autofocus.

I've never mounted my phone because I knew the vibration wouldn't be good for it. When I need GPS, I just use my bluetooth speakers in my helmet or ear buds. My main reason is that I don't use a windshield or fairing and I've seen too many rider's phones come loose and go skipping down the asphalt at 60mph or small rocks, bugs and debris smacking into it. I also don't like a phone baking in the hot sun. That can do some serious damage. I prefer to keep my phone in my jacket or pants pocket.

Good Info Kevin @MCrider .. I hit a Deer so hard my Speedometer quit working on my Yamaha FZ-07 .. I just installed 2" handle bar risers for my short arms.. I had to make a plate to raise my speedometer two inches .. now it moves when I hit bumps .. My front forks are much stiffer now with Olihn Cartriges.. I think I will had a layer of thick rubber truck intertube between the speedomter and the mount.. I have mounted my Compter GPS componets on the dash of my lime spreader trucks with rubber intertube for insulation ..

I've been using a Quad Lock on my R1250 GSA for about 6 months. I've got it mounted to the accessory bar and so far no issues with my Samsung S21+ and very little vibrations overall. I have no worries about the phone coming loose with how the case locks into the mount. If any other GS riders are wondering Quad Locks mirror mount fits on the accessory bar.

The vibration issue destroying things is nothing new. I have been wearing Seiko Sportsmatic 5 self winding mechanical watches since I picked my first one up in Vietnam in 1966. Over the years I have gone through a dozen of these watches while riding hundreds of thousands of miles on motorcycles. Having them rebuilt or repaired over the years, the repair shops eventually tell me that the vibration destroyed the internals of the watches and prevents their repair after about 5 years. The worse offender was my Norton Atlas and my little Yamaha RD 250B two stroke that I rode from 1968 through the early 2000s. I couldn't get 3 years out of the watches. The repair shop told me it just destroyed the mechanisms. Unfortunately, the Seiko Sportsmatic 5's are no longer available in the United States unless you order them on line from dealers in South America or Japan. Since switching to Harleys in 1995 through today, I have been averaging 8 years per watch, about what you would expect from a mechanical watch. I keep my cell phone in my pocket.

Few years ago when RC multirotors started to emerge same problem was faced. Vibrations from motors with props would play havoc with IMU in flight controllers. There were many experiments done but few were successful. These include moongel, sorbothane pads, rubber band suspension etc. Try experimenting with moongel pads by sandwiching these between phone & phone holder so that they absorb the vibrations from the holder.

Thanks. That a nice piece of advice. Better later than never. I had my issues with the quadlock mount and after recovering my phone from the i-store , I got the new dampner but I still am cautious about using the phone again in there. I put it on the saddle bag and listen to gps instructions instead. I don’t rely anymore installing it on the motorcycle handlebar. This is not very practical but at least is safe in what concerns to the iPhone camera well functioning . Anyway, thanks for the video.

MC I use my phone as a app interface to my rear camera via wifi. For example a mirror behind me. I made a holder from a car holder. Its Neck I modified and mounts to the center of my handle bars. To support rotation of portrait or landscape perspective while on my bike, I use rubber hose rings that mesh together in the phone mounts neck. Hence, it does not loosen up that much when rotating, and the implicit benefit is shock dampening.

Yeah, Apple's still a BUSINESS... SO they're most interested in "problem motorcycles" that will kill an iphone before the warranty is out... Once they no longer have to give you a free repair or whatever, you're on your own... SO no, that list is GOING to be less than complete. Here's a decent (not perfect) litmus test for you though. Start your motorcycle and get through the "warm up" period, so the "low rpm idle" settles in, since this is probably 90% of your riding condition on the bike. Rest a hand on the wrist over a handlebar and watch your finger tips... if they bounce around, you've got "deadly vibrations"... You can usually feel it, but some of us aren't as sensitive as others... AND like I warned, NOT perfect... You may be inclined to try the test while you're on the road, which is fine, though I can recommend using specifically your LEFT hand for that one, since you'll need the right to maintain throttle for testing "at speed"... just in case the vibrations may change... AND yes, you can test just as well with your palm up as you can palm down (regarding visibility of your fingers). DON'T lose track of the fact you're on the road, though. It's a simple enough test, and either you've got deadly vibrations, prefer to err on the side of caution (just assume they're deadly and get the damper) or you don't... and you don't mind risking your phone on that assessment. Pretty much all electronics are sensitive to vibrations, so any Camera, GPS, or other electronic gizmo is likely to be eventually adversely effected by riding around attached to a motorcycle... That's just worth a mention somewhere. You can find dampeners and the like to prolong the life, but they likely only reduce harm rather than quite eliminate it entirely... just to be clear. ;o)

I posted a video on Reddit about the dampener not saving my phones camera. I used rokform, ram mount, and quadlock with and without the dampener all only used on my Indian scout. The dampener ultimately only prolonged the iso failure, lasted about 2.5k miles before messing up. Quadlock reached out to me and ultimately said that my iPhone X had a “ pre-existing condition” (my words not their exact words) so my review post was unfair. I then told them my phone was fixed with a brand new camera not just a repair job. They never replied back after that. (This was paraphrased to the key points) Move on to me then buying a brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max and never mounting it to anything but my scout via the quadlock mount with the dampener installed. After about 1k miles I started to see the tell tale signs of it beginning to fail, I’ve experienced the camera iso failure 4-5 times I know what the signs are. I unfortunately had an accident before I could continue to use it, but will be again soon. I know in my gut ie from experience, it’s going to eventually fail again. I’ll get it repaired by Apple care, I just won’t tell them I ride and not have the case on it or I’ll just upgrade if they refuse to fix it. Admittedly I have lil bit of a personal vendetta because I was basically called a liar and or incompetent. I will be keeping a video documentation of me using it and how many miles it took before it failed prove the camera was fine before etc. The bigger and more important reason I’ll be doing this is for the same reason I initially did my review, to help fellow rider and alike to make an informed decision on spending their money on stuff I actually use myself. I always tell the good the bad and the ugly and that includes if and why my opinion is bias. My opinion atm from past experience to anyone who’s read this far is save your money or mount a phone you don’t care about not having a properly functioning camera. If my camera never fails I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong and give praise to quadlock. I applaud them still for being one of the few to acknowledge the vibrations were an issue, even before Apple got hip to the game.

Why no matter what clamp style or the product, I always cut a strip of bicycle inner tube to go between the metal and the clamp to reduce vibration

Not in the phone pouch pocket of my riding jacket... Which is where mine always is while moving. If i need to check location because I'm not sure where I am, I pull over and kickstand down. I was able to find a route for decades before Garmin or Google Maps. I don't answer calls or read texts while moving. I know i can't do two things at once. A man's gotta know his limitations.

Only put my older iPhone 7 on my Diavel 1260 handle bars once, using a different mount on 2-1/2 hour ride. After that one ride every time I would open the camera app it would look okay, but when I went to take a picture the app would crash. Thankfully a restart fixed the issue, I haven't risked further damage by mounting my phone since then. Looking at that Apple article, it lists iPhone 6 and newer as being ones that can be effected. Thought it was only newer phones. I will probably pickup up a quad lock at some point so I can use my phone for navigation in the future. For now I am just putting my route into waze and then putting the phone in my pocket and just listening to the audio directions.

I use a Tomtom rider 550 gps for my navigation. I was using my smartphone for a gps but started having heat issues. I prefer the tomtom now. It has its quirks, but with over 7k miles on it, It’s my go to. I have it bound to my Sena headset so I am getting my turn by turn in my helmet and don’t have to take my eyes off the road. My phone stays in my pocket where it belongs.

Yup, my Indian Scout killed 3 iPhone cameras using a Rokform mount. Have been using the Quadlock with the vibration dampener now for almost a year on my Indian Springfield with no issues. Does the Quadlock vibration dampener look attractive? HELL NO! It’s pretty much ugly as sin, and getting it set up correctly with the right angles was a PITA, but it does the job; so I guess that is the trade off.

It’s not an Android/IOS ISSUE, it all depends on what cellphone you have, or rather what kind of camera your cellphone has. I’ve had my iPhone 7 Plus mounted on several bikes for about five years - without any kind of dampener - and no issues. On my 1250GS I now have the iPhone in an adapter fitted in the Nav6 mount. There’s no dampener whatsoever here either. The iPhone 7 has a stabilizer in the camera, obviously it is not as sensitive as later iPhones. My iPhone 12 Pro always stays in my pocket. If I need a navigation function (Maps etc) or want to listen to music/radio I let the 7 share internet data with the iPhone 12.

probably comes down to the specific sensor as well, Ive got a oneplus 8 pro with OIS and thousands of miles using the ABSOULTE cheapest mount on my 1200 sportster, never had a single issue. Ive done some research into this issue, and it really seemed like apple phones had a higher failure rate. considering that basically any android phone in the same realm of price >500usd also has OIS nowadays just saying it cause apple is "more common" doesnt really explain it. not to mention apple had to put out a warning about it. not to say this doesnt happen to android phones, but that if you have an Iphone you might want to be extra worried about it. (and feel the need to spend a few hundreds of dollars on a mount lol)

Quad Lock w/ VD does not work well if mounted on Apes and in more of a “vertical” orientation. Vibrates even worse than without the VD! Phone has to be more in a horizontal orientation for this to work. Found that out first hand, almost destroyed my camera on my iPhone as well as some other apps that locked up. Was lucky to find this out without any permeant damage to my iPhone. Went back to my TackForm mount.

Great video Kevin and thank you for your high quality content. I didn't catch which iphone model you have- I have an iphone 13 and have read this camera is somewhat unique and more sensitive to the vibrations. I would like to get the quad lock but want to make sure it is safe for the 13. Thanks. Tim (BMW R1250 GSA)

I'm riding a kawasaki ninja zx10r for a year now using the quadlock mount with vibration dampener and my galaxy note 20 ultra just did the same, lost the focus on the main camera and lost the OIS on the telephoto, so it's never a good setup 👌😉
