Well what a day!
Another epic detecting adventure. Silver four times, Roman and a 300 year old long lost romance!
And to top it all a phone call from The BBC to invite me on their show….. LIVE….. hence the reason why I didn’t manage to film in the light-box!!
What an adventure!!

Item at min 4-40. Not certain but resembles an hinged silver top from a ink bottle as found on a clerk or a gentleman's desk and a quill dipped in to it

@@thescottishdetectorist thank you! I’m always curious if some “thingy’s” turn up to be older than expected, and what they may have been for. Also, just a question, is it normal for people detecting to keep all the actual trash, like ring pulls, to bin them so they don’t get a signal in the future?

Hey John, you were right - the Canadian dime IS a British coin which was minted in either London at Tower Mint or Heatons in Birmingham then shipped over to Canada. The date is below the word CENTS and it's really messed up due to the folds. You can see the remnants of it, a 18 then a misshapen 9 or an inverted 6 imprint? The Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa wasn't founded until 1908 so all QV coins were British and used a bun-head Victoria obverse.

Astounding coin finds! I love how you say something's not very old at 150 years, or so. Here in the U.S. we'd call that very old - lol. It's all relative, isn't it. Ireland has thousands of years of known history. The U.S. is a relative baby at just over 200 years.

Amazing finds yet again, John!! Your mystery silver item in the beginning is part of a windcap from a smoking pipe. You have the part that fits over the pipe bowl, and the little hinge is where the decorative lid is attached. These show up commonly on the continent but don't seem to have been popular in the UK or America. These are typically 1700s when I find them in Germany. Best wishes and happy digging!

Hey John, not sure if anyone has commented on this yet, the Canadian 10 cent piece had to have been issued sometime after 1867 as that is the year Canada became a Confederation. Ah, as soon as you said "pilgrim badge", I had toblaugh. I knew it was a mold, and I own some pilgrim badges, but I didn't put them together. They usually have little prongs on the back that bend easily. You'd press them through the loose-weave cloth of the time and bend the tabs to keep it on. They remind me of the emroidered patches we all had on jackets as teenagers. :) The screw-end finial looks like a lamp finial. :) Lead filled brass looks like the base of a bill spike.
