Bought one as an all rounder radio, tremendous value for money, great fun, small size, carry anywhere, lots of features. Comes with it's own rechargeable battery and charging base for £15.

Bought a few of these to play with, very impressive what developers have done with the firmware. The hardware obviously has severe limitations but it is fascinating what the chipset can do.

Been enjoying mine for the last month or so. Bought it for the airband mainly and thought I'd made a mistake before finding that firmware that fixes the AM. Now it's a budget joy and Chirp support is ace.

what the unofficial mods have done, is amazing. but sure there are limitations. but what it has done, is shown us all what is possible with this radios chip set. so, there is no reason why Quansheng, seeing all this, can't make a real official radio with these features and all the hardware filtering to go with it. Even if it cost twice as much as a k5 does, a k5 with tx/rx 2/70 ssb (or more like 10/6/23cm) out of the box would be a game changer and make them rich, and hams (and cbers) very very happy 😀😀😀

sure, but that would require competence.

The problem is that such manufacturers make these things by the hundreds of thousands and can achieve a very low price that way. The amateur radio market just isn't big enough to do that. Compare with the wellknown RTL2838 USB sticks which can be used with SDR software. But with lots of limitations. Still we do not see similar sticks at twice the price that perform a lot better. A better SDR receiver costs a lot more. Mostly because it is manufactured in smaller series.

@@Rob2 yeah, food for thought there🤔. still, if we don't let them know what we want, we will never even have the chance for it. 🙂

For the price, this radio is truly amazing. That it can receive SSB at all is just astounding. And it sounds really good for a device not even remotely designed for managing SSB. Definitely usable enough for me to have as an all day carry device, to check on bands now and then. Not something I would use as my main shack RX radio, for sure, but then at this price that's hardly what I'd get it for.

The best feature of this radio for me is mic gain and companding. The FT4 and UV-5R I had before were both way too quiet on TX and getting heard clearly was a real struggle, a bit like trying to cut a gramophone record must have been a century ago. The sound level is great on this. Finally I have a handheld I can use. The firmware mods are just a bonus. I find the spectrum analyser’s ability to listen to a signal as soon as it appears much better than using a scan function.

OM0ET posted a firmware comparison today (29 Dec 2023), one day after Matt posted this Tech Minds video. It examines reception in SSB-mode on 2 m using three firmwares: IJV v.2.3R5, FAGCI 1.1.2 Lite Test, and EGZUMER v.0.21. In that very limited test, reception was most sensitive with IJV, slightly less sensitive with FAGCI, and least sensitive with EGZUMER: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e-Cld7eatNvSno0.html

the crux about most china radios is not the receiver but the unwanted tx products. I would not shrink from such a versatile little gadget. Thanks for your video Matt!

Worth installing for the spectrum analyser alone (F and 5 to start).

Meanwhile it's forbidden in Switzerland due to their strict harmonics regulations. The reception is ok, not as good as a lot of people say. But as a cheap fun radio with modding skills it's great. I hope that people don't pollute the air too much with such modded tx radios.

Certainly no GIMMICK. It has its purpose and use. All the improvements with such small internal memory is amazing. The improved AM reception alone is a great addition for a radio that should have had it right out of the box. I don't think the firmware developers are interested in GIMMICKs but improving the features and performance of an impressively priced radio.

My radio makes strong AM Air-band signals totally unreadable ... its just creates a synthetic noise that has no resemblance with voice behind a poor AGC implementation. Maybe there is a new version out and it is just a matter of updating? ... but I thought mine shows the same release. One thing, the newer version with the top metal panel has a major improvement in terms of spitting out harmonics, with that one you can actually transmit on 2m without breaking the rules and irritating military air traffic.

great video and yeas for ne it is a gimmick, its great you can flash it for the price but but after living with it for a week every day i just wanted to shoot it lol ok for 2 and 70 but for everything else not so good. if you have no other radio then it is great but it will not replace my icoms, yaesu and kenwood just yet. but..................... with a bit of luck it will force top band name radios to look at this and make changed to what we have on the market. if this was a 200 quid kenwood or icom it would be great, but it is just a ht for under 20 qrid. its like putting alloys and a spoiler on a 1L car..... its still a 1L car. i may own and hate the radio but i am looking forward to seeing what they do next with it or newer radios. after testing it as an edc radio on 2 and 7 i found it poor, before owning this radio i had a kenwood for an edc ht, after living with the qwan shite i ended up buy a wouxun and even tho i will never pick up the kg5wr3zyz again i cant bring my self to get rid of it. great wall hanger and back up ht but just a gimmick for me
