Hi Nick, these chinese are incredible. I had a Baofeng but I sold it. Didn’t really liked ound on receive compeared to my Yaesu but of course the price is different. Regarding power measurements I suggest to precisely check the attenuation you get through the entire path, connectors, cables and finally also the attenuator. The latter can oscillate around the nominal value as you know. When I did the same test I input a certain known level into the whole path and measured the output for every frequency. Of course the relative measure between the three radios is valid but if you wish to have am accurate result be sure to check as I said if you’re willing to do it. I’m sure you could find a difference of up to a dB than what you think. Eventually you can feed the right attenuation value to the HP power meter. If you di it ket me know what you get. Hi Diego, you sold the Baofeng, was it worth selling? This radio boasts better audio and it is much better than the Baofengs I have. I'm reasonably confident of my measurements, the power attenuator is within 0.1 db to 2 Ghz and I've checked it on the rf power meter and spectrum analyzer. I've measured many radios and the results are consistent. The supposedly 8 watt Baofeng I have measured 6.5 Watts so more or less what you would expect and the 5 watt ones measures 5 Watts. But when it comes to measuring rf power its a bit difficult to be 100 % certain. Best wishes nick

@@ptronixwell Nick, in that case my advise is just helpless and those are really the values out of that radio. Anyway between 3.8 and 5w not too much difference. You were exciting that far repeater so it is doing what is supposed to do. I sold my Baofeng for 20 euros, I just didn’t like it and don’t want to accumulate too many things, not too much space. I still have another Baofeng, the 888 which is very basic UHF only, 16ch no display nor keypad. Only software programmable. I use it like a sort of pmr plus few repeaters. Bye now Diego

Help Please. How do you enter a channel, memory name directly on Radio without using an external computer. George

Hi Nick, Thanks for the review. I don't have a massive interest in 2m/70cm, but being newly qualified (M7XHP) think I'll have to dip my toes in the water with one of these. Maybe you could show me the ropes? My QTH is not too far from you. But no worries if you'd rather not.

Appreciates if you could check the RF output power on 27MHz AM and FM? And what are harmonics freq. and dB level when TX on 27MHz CB band? This is important to know the actual myths if there are spurious emissions over air band if the TX on 27MHz true or false. I meant if there are, is it high enough or just a very low harmonics. Thank you.

Sorry can't do that. Not put in the firmware to operate on those frequencies. But if you use it on frequencies it's not designed for then I think you're going to have spurious signals being generated. If and when I install different firmware I'll check it

Pointless for tx on 11m the filters aren't there, tx 200mW with terrible harmonics. Ok for rx with correct antenna dicone

NO TX on 27mhz please nor any other frequency other than designed for ie 136-174 and 400-470. Power on CB would be uW (micro Watt) level whilst at the same time your TX power will generate harmonics at the height of 1W in the aviation band putting at risk lives. I would not do that.

I know nothing of economics, clearly - how they can afford sell and ship that radio for less than 10 pounds is well beyond me. "Buy high, sell low, make it up in volume" ? Thanks for the review and tests, Nick. Impressive performance, truly unbeatable at that price. (And: LOL at "bad smell or smog".)

Hi Joe, my theory is they sell these at a loss hoping you'll buy something else from them. I doubt I'd be able to get another one at that price. That was probably a one off special to suck you in.

Well, put the new firmware on it and you will be even more amazed about what this 10 pounds radio can do. Including receiving from 18 till 1300mhz, spectrum analyzer and receiving USB.

How to put the name on channel?

The only way to name channels is to connect it to a computer and use a program like chirp, which you can download for free

I'm aware of the radios stated power. I'm using a high quality Agilent rf power meter not some cheap junk. As you can see in the video I tested it at all 3 power settings. My measurement accuracy is proved when I tested the Baofeng at its stated 5 watt output. Maybe the radio is substandard but hey what's the difference between 4 and 5 watt? 1 db. You ain't gonna notice that in practise. Bear in mind my first 2m handheld 40 years ago only managed 1.5 watt and cost 15 × more and was the size of a small brick!

There are differences between radios of the same model + power is not the same depending on the frequency. My copy has 4.5 W on 146 while it peaks over 5W at around 150mhz. Same on 70cm : 4.5W at 433, 4.8 at 446, and over 5 at GMRS frequencies (462). Same for low and medium, they vary accordingly. As it has been said, difference between 4.5 or 5+W can't be noticed in the real world. Add to that the fact that the antenna is more or less resonant and has more or less losses depending to where it's resonant (rubber duckies often have high SWR which I measured between 2 and 3 depending on the frequency ie. reflected power is between 11 and 25%). Which means the difference in power can be even less noticable...
