Absolutely amazing. Most topics existing within the quant realm, you have such a good grasp on. I loved how you spoke about the issues regarding the computer science aspect. Anyone is capable of writing code, however the minority who can write well optimised code that follow best practices to the T is considered an asset in computer science. Really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!

I have a video on 32 books coming out this Sunday. It will have book titles and links in the description. I broke the video up into different categories and I talk a little about each book as well.

Hey Dimitri how good I need to be at programming? I am good at finance and mathematics but I don't know programming should I go for financial engineering?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 5 жыл бұрын
You can learning programming during a financial engineering masters however I encourage you to start learning R or Python online before you start the program. In general you will need to be functional for a job but you'll be happier and more productive at quant finance if you can program at a higher level.

Hey Dimitri, Thanks for your video. Supper helpful. I am currently pursuing a master of financial mathematics at the University of Chicago. I agree with your point about learning programming algorithm. I don’t have any computer science experience before. What are some fundamental CS courses you would recommend me to take?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 5 жыл бұрын
I would recommend classes along the lines of these topics: Programming and Data Structures Logic Design Algorithms Object Oriented Programming Compiler Construction A class that most likely won't be useful is "Computer Architecture" however it is a very fascinating topic if you are interested in how computers actually work. MIT has a video series on KZfaq which covers this.

Hi Dimitri, To what extent is numerical analysis (a field in mathematics) used in finance? In pricing derivatives, is the numerical method finite difference still in use nowadays, than say the martingale method? Thanks!
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 5 жыл бұрын
If you work in financial engineering (derivative creation) you will use numerical methods. The Black-Scholes is a closed form solution however any adjustments to the assumptions result in using numerical methods for solving the pricing equations. Yes, FDM can be used for these solutions (I don't actually work in this space but have knowledge from grad school).

Thanks for sharing! When you say moving to hedge fund realm, does that mean risk management in hedge fund? Are they different from that in banks?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 4 жыл бұрын
The roles will be similar however the titles will be different. For example, you could be a model developer (in risk management) at a bank. At a hedge fund you would be called a model developer or researcher. Both have data that they are trying to model for profits. If you work in market risk the move to a trading firm is fairly easy however if you work in credit risk it will be more challenging because the models used and goals are different. Most people don't realize that the risk management department at banks are just quant teams. They have labeled them "risk" because the models we build help mitigate risk for regulations. The models used are for all kinds of things from pricing assets, to measuring expected losses, to predicting customer behavior. Validation teams manage the model risks. Meaning the risks behind an incorrect model structures, limitations, and weaknesses.

Hey Dimitri, how much is a quant strategy making per year in the business? It might not be necessarily your results but the result of all people in the business. Best, Matt
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 5 жыл бұрын
This is a tough question to answer. Most for profit investing firms (excluding publicly traded banks) keep this information private. Also to make things worse, there are a lot of small players who don't properly calculate returns (gross vs risk adjusted). If you look at the article I linked below you can see the estimates for profits with the big successful quant finance firms which ranges from 6%-14.6% for 2018. www.cnbc.com/2019/01/04/hedge-fund-returns-in-2018-the-good-the-bad-the-ugly.html
