I usually watch your videos to learn about new concepts and ideas in fields completely unrelated to what I do, so this is the first time I actually watched a topic on something related to my field of study and work (Computer Engineering). And it has been such a great experience to see how elegantly you guys approached some of the concepts I've been trying to explain family and friends many times (because the question "so what exactly do you do?" or "how do computers actually work?" naturally pop). This gave me a very unique perspective on how much "simplification" is actually done on the subject to fit in a video, and how accurately and brilliantly the essence of the topic is captured. I already had a great level of respect for all the hard work that's being put in these videos, but it just went to the next level. Thanks for all the awesome work in educating the world.

Currently, I have been doing research over the past year pertaining to quantum mechanics and computing at UT Austin. My professor in Computer architecture is doing research on quantum computers, and he said to us today that Google and IBM promise more than they actually know. He believes that it will take several decades to be able to use them really well and even then not in the sense of a private computer, but rather in large projects.
@Noah-ws8ho
@Noah-ws8ho 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, well, while it's definitely true that we're definitely still a few decades away from being able to do something like Schor's algorithm, I feel that's a bit cyncial. They've definitely made some absolutely remarkable progress. The current best is 127 "qubits". Those qubits are too unstable to even as much as all connect with each other with CNOT gates so that's in practice 0 qubits *but* ; it's definitely a lot further than I would have believed possible within a decade, 5 years ago. Suddenly; to me, the magical ~1000 qubits we'd need to have an *actual, useable, stable* 1-bit quantum computer, seems like it's within reach. And to me, that's absolutely astounding.

I also read the books you guys share with us. Although this is the first time I am having a hard time understanding a video topic. This is an interesting topic. I really wanna know in depth about it. It is going to be awesome if you guys come up with a new video related to this topic or even a whole series of videos. I really think there are people who will agree with this idea. A series of quantum theory is a great new topic to start. I really hope you guys read this comment and give it a think.

@tomjones3993
@tomjones3993 8 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, the most difficult part of quantum computing is actually operating them. They can successfully create multi qbit processors and supercool them to run effectively but they are having trouble with the programming. Right now they have to be programmed using complex algorithms just to actually get usable information out of them, and each different problem being computed must be individually programmed. Right now lockheed martin is using a 512qbit D-wave 2 and google is using an experimental 1024(i think)qbit D-wave 2. At this point they have not been able to compute anything complex, accurately or on a repeatable basis so it's still very early days. But I honestly think this is next stage in human advancement without a doubt.

Im shure if the people in google gave him the info he needs to basically operate and programm an quantum computer hed be able to programm anything they would throw at him. ( cause he learns. Like for real unlike android . I know that thjat isnt true but i mean if he has alot of trial and error experiences hed maybe be able to make programs quick enought ) Wow im a programmer and looking at this its almost just bullshit. Just tell her that scientists are learning how to manipulate the unique mathematical properties of Psi (the symbol used to denote the wavestate of a quanta, or even discrete group of quanta) to cheat universe by selling precision for speed, then cheating it back again the opposite way and making a profit twice in order to feed everyone with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. It's kinda a bastardization of buying options, short selling and leveraging market speculation, but with the tiniest pieces of reality. And bizarrely enough it turns out that our universe actually does work that way? (Yes, I'm hideously oversimplifying and making broken metaphors, but what do you expect with a subject this complex.) Apparently God was a Capitalist with Socialist ambitions.

Since this video has been released, transistors have decreased in size furthermore. An iPhone XS or later has a transistor size of 7 nm, which was pretty revolutionary since it was one of the only devices to be mass-produced with such an architecture. In the past year, however, 7 nm transistors are becoming more prevalent in PCs. In 2019, 5 nm technology has become commercialized, though not on a massive scale. Even now, Samsung has announced they plan to commercialize 3 nm technology. The important thing to note here is that we design these transistors often decades before they become commercial. For example, 10 nm technology was first designed in the 1980s before being created in 2002 and commercialized in 2016. Currently, the smallest transistor created is at 2.3 nm, which may signal that we are at an end for transistors, considering how the disparity between the size of created transistors and the size of commercialized transistors has diminished greatly. Currently, some major nanotech research firms have considered 14-angstrom transistors (14Å, one angstrom is 10^-10 meters, 1 ten-billionth), which is about half the width of a DNA helix, by around 2025. However, whether or not we will be able to actually realize this is up for debate for the reasons mentioned in this video.

I get Kurzgesagt tries to aim for the lowest common denominator and there are better channels for scientific discussion but it's still disappointing nonetheless. The fact you have two douchebags here saying "too long" and "I couldn't read all this" is awful. I can somewhat wrap my head around the concepts in this video but I _completely_ fail to understand why the fuck someone would fail to read something, then spend the time and energy expressing that they didn't read it. TL;DR You're awesome and thanks for having something to teach us (which should be why we're all here). If anyone's interested, one of the concepts being discussed in the video and in your comment is called Moore's Law.
