@@sagethebabypersonmage No, I am "ignorancephobic." In the English language "they" cannot refer to a single person. He, she, and it are pretty much the choices. If someone asked me "Is that your dog?" I certainly wouldn't say "Yes THEY are."

@@txmike1945 This is one of those 'funny because it's so confidently wrong' responses. The singular 'they' has been a feature of the English language for centuries. (To take a random modern example: "A taxi driver said the funniest thing to me the other day." "Oh, what did they say?"). Ten minutes of research / education on the subject would work wonders for you. It's a common misconception, and there's no shame in having believed it in error - there *is*, however, shame in insisting on a primary-school level of grammatical understanding as an excuse for transphobia. (Fun fact: the word 'you' hasn't always been used as a singular pronoun. The magic of language is that it's constantly adapting and evolving. Assuming of course that you're not about to insist that it's grammatically incorrect for us not to use 'thou / thee / thy', since those are - from a historical standpoint - more grammatically correct than 'you'.) Quite apart from that, of course, is the extending of basic respect to other people. I take it you have no issue changing the way you refer to a person once they get married and change their name? (Look at that - another singular 'their', referring to a single person whose gender isn't specified.) Referring to a person with respectful use of their pronouns is no different. Incidentally, because you brought it up - I might not refer to my own dog as they, but I'd certainly use it for someone else's -- "Your dog is so cute! What's their name?"
