Quantum Numbers
- A set of four numbers used to describe the energy, shape, and orientation of an electron's orbit around the nucleus.
Principal Quantum Number (n):
- Energy level of the electron
- Positive integer (1, 2, 3, ...)
Azimuthal Quantum Number (l):
- Shape of the orbital
- Integer from 0 to n-1
Magnetic Quantum Number (m):
- Orientation of the orbital in a magnetic field
- Integer from -l to +l
Spin Quantum Number (s):
- Spin of the electron (±1/2)
Rules:
- n determines the energy level and size of the orbital
- l determines the shape of the orbital (s, p, d, f)
- m determines the orientation of the orbital in space
- s determines the spin of the electron (up or down)
Orbital Shapes:
- s (l=0): spherical shape
- p (l=1): dumbbell shape
- d (l=2): four-leaf clover shape
- f (l=3): complex shape
Importance:
- Quantum numbers determine the chemical properties of an element
- Energy levels and orbitals determine the electron configuration
- Electron configuration determines the chemical reactivity and bonding behavior
