I hear ya there. The Memories are so grand, yet the memories are so sad. My Parents was good friends with Bing Crosby's brother "Bob Crosby", he use to fly in a few times every year to spend time with us all, & when he found out I wanted to be a movie star, he wanted to fly me home with him to live with him & his Wife & take me over to Warner Brothers to see if id pass a Screen Test, & if I didn't pass the Screen Test he said he'd put me through acting class's. But my Mom being the bitch she was stopped me... I was 15yrs old & I sat there & cried. Then yrs later when I met someone famous & I got engaged to a movie star. Mom ruined that too. Memories are good.

I'm sorry you have bad memories of your Mom ! I'm sure she was just trying to do what she felt was right ! I remember my parents not allowing me to do certain things when I was young and I didn't understand it then but then when I became an adult I understood why things happened the way they did !

We visited The Lady & Sons in June 2006. My sister was turned 30 & she chose Savannah as our vacation spot & The Lady & Sons as her special dinner. Our grandmother got to go with us too. Everyone really enjoyed it. Bobby, loved your stories. I agree you should write them down for your kids but a book would be fabulous! We'd love to read it.

I love hoecakes and okra! My father was stationed in Georgia when he was in the military and a little old lady they lived with insisted my mother had to learn southern cooking. Hoecakes and grits were the very first things. My father said he repaired the bottom of his military boots with the first batch she made. 😂🤣😂

I cannot say enough about Paula Deen. I was at home with my newborn son. I had always loved cooking. I was building on my home cooking skills. I found Paula on that “cooking channel”. I watched her every single day. Being an Alabamian, and southern born and raised, I was so fixated on Paula’s cooking style. What I’m saying is Paula Deen taught me how to cook. Someone gifted me her book, “It Aint All About the Cooking”. I absolutely connected to her on a deeper level. So this is my thanks, that nearly 15 years later, I am so glad I can still access my favorite cook, chef and Southern Lady, Paula Deen. I love you, pray GOD CONTINUES TO BLESS YOUR FAMILY. You are all my kind of people. Ive watched you, through the years, your sons, grandchildren and restaurant. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best. Love you Paula! ❤️from Alabama Jenny PS My Mom and I are coming to Savannah to visit-first time ever, planning October 2020. I hope to get a reservation at L&S.

Great times as a guest with my Mother on a Senior Bus tour from Charleston to Savannah in the late 90’s. Bobby, as you took us down memory lane today, thank you for reminding me of my memory of the Lady and son’s luncheon. A cozy little restaurant, scent of everything delicious I enjoyed eyeing your delicious buffet. You seated everyone with your magnetic charm, Bobby to small interesting tables that tickled me as everyone had their own personal experience with y’all. The highlight was when your Mom, Paula Deen chatted with everyone checking to make sure it was a wonderful experience, the best meal in the World-100%! Being a businessperson, when I had the honor of chatting with your mother, I asked her to open one in Charleston. I had a strong feeling this-then little known restaurant, was without a doubt a ‘little gold mine’. And I must say When Paula Deen Smiles, it lights the Room up! Thank you 🙏 for this beautiful remembrance of my Trip with my Mom, who I’m sure if okra is in Heaven she’s enjoying some right now. Much love- Lark from CHARLESTON SC Ps. Looking forward to a return trip when you open. God bless us all and especially the DEENS💥❤️💥

Oh yes Bobby I remember those great days. I drove 7 hours to eat there and stood in line outside. I remember the excitement & the amazing food. It did not disappoint! Jamie was leaned up against the wall & I was too timid to speak( I regret that to this day). I was afraid of bothering him. 🤦‍♀️ I still have my T-shirt that I purchased in the booth up front. My best friend, Catherine Nadeau, worked at The Lady and Son's back in the day. Whenever I came to visit her from FL, I always had something from the restaurant. I loved the fried chicken and the potpie. One time after her shift, I met her across the street for drinks where she introduced me to Bobby. What great times in Savannah! Especially at St. Patrick's.

In my little country cafe fried cornbread was served with every meal and my most remembered customer was a little old homeless man who asked for a meal. Of course he was served everything we had to offer and several of the other customers offered to pay for his meal. I was so blessed this man can in because he let me see the hearts of the other people I served everyday

My brother took my mom on a mother's day adventure. He took her to see Paula at a book signing in Birmingham Alabama. Then he drove her to your restaurant in Savannah to eat. He bought her an apron and both brothers signed the apron. They mentioned that they were sorry their mom wasn't there and didn't know where she was. My brother told them that she was in Birmingham and they already got to meet her. The apron has been hanging in the kitchen for over 20 years! She had an amazing mother's day adventure! I just love to see Paula cooking with her family! When our boys were teens, my husband came up with the idea, the kids should take turns cooking super. 4 boys one girl, the boys tried that woman's work 🐂💩, that didn't go to well for them! Like he explained to them, even boys need to know how to cook, you my have to survive in your own! Also made them take turns doing dishes, not the cook for the night! At first the cook didn't take the time to clean up their messes, but when it was their turn to do dishes ( clean the kitchen) they started learning the saying, "What goes around, Comes around"! They sure learned quick. I was laid up at the time, mostly in my hospital bed, some in my wheelchair, ( my house is definitely NOT wheelchair friendly)! I fought to get back to health and walking, they learned a lot about survival skills, when mom couldn't do it all!

The Lady & Sons restaurant stories are so interesting. It's own little world. The "ho(e)s" story is certainly one to remember! 🤣 The movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was released in the fall of 1997, if that will help pinpoint the year when the film crew was in Savannah. In an earlier comment, I'd mentioned that I had met Paula in the summer of 1998 at her cookbook signing in Charleston SC. She shared so many great stories with me, including some about Clint Eastwood's visits to The Lady & Sons. She said that Clint would have rutabagas from the buffet every night, and he told her that his mother used to make them when he was growing up.

My Mamaw Sams made these and taught my mom about them back in the 1940's. I have the cast iron skillet that she used to cook them. They're delicious!

So y'all opened your restaurants on January the 8th and that's Elvis' birthday and today is sadly the 43rd anniversary of his death . Another Elvis connection with you Paula . I bet that was exciting to see Clint Eastwood ?!! My daddy looked just like Clint Eastwood . Thanks for all of your stories Bobby . I hope you share some more of them with us . The okra hoecakes looks delicious !! I wish I had a bite of one of them this morning . 😉😋😊 When I was growing up my Granny always called okra ... ( okry ) . I still call it okry . Haha..!! 😂😘❤

My daughter, granddaughter and I ate a the Lady and Sons 10 years ago. I was a little disappointed because Paula wasn’t there at the time. I did buy one of your cook books. I loved Savanna and I hope some day I will be able to go back again. From one old gal to another I love watching your videos. God Bless

I like fried okra pretty good, but my favorite is pickled okra. I can sit down and eat a whole jar. 😊 Also, I can't think of anyone making hoecakes in my neck of the woods, but some people have made fried cornbread. Put a little bit of oil and butter in a pan and let it get hot. Take your favorite cornbread recipe and scoop out a little at a time, and cook it like you would a pancake. Yummy with beans taters.

Yours were hoecakes too. Y’all just called it fried cornbread. We call it fried cornbread where I’m from too. Fried cornbread and cornmeal hoecakes are the same thing.

My 3 girlfriends and I ate at Lady and Sons in the Spring of 2003. We were just a few years out of college and my one friend had moved to Savannah to be the music minister at a church. Things didn't work out as planned, so myself and two other girls borrowed my dads truck and a trailer and drove from Indiana to Savannah to pack up our friends things and move her back home to IN. We drove and got there on Friday night, packed all day Sat, cleaned ourselves up and went to The Lady and Sons for dinner on Sat. night. I wish I could remember what I ordered, but I do remember the hoecakes and syrup!

Bobby, I insisted on going to the Lady and Sons when we were passing through Savannah in the early 2000s. The line was all the way around the block and then some. My family didn’t wanna wait three hours, so I just marched right in, put them on the elevator, and we went up to the second floor. They were shocked at my audacity, but I am glad I did it! The service and the food were “out of this world”, as your Mama likes to say.

I live in Washington DC. My youngest son moved to Savannah a few years ago. Every morning he can he stops in front of your restaurant and waved at the city camera across the street so I could see him. He was on his way to Belford's to work as a waiter.
