First things first, this GRE Quant video is about establishing that the 4th quartile [Q4] is good, 1st quartile [Q1] not so good.
A quartile does tell you the proportion of a population that scored below a certain number.
But unless a population is normally distributed, quartiles don’t tell you much more:
Say there is a test scored out of 340.
If I scored a 99th percentile how much more did I score than Person B who scored in the 19th percentile?
What percentage of students scored between my score and Person B’s score? This we can work out. 80%.
Now let’s work out the interquartile Range - useful due to eliminating extremes - of the first 8 multiples of 7.
Q3 [find the median of the last group of numbers, excluding median if necessary] - Q1 [median of first group of numbers]
Box and Whisker diagram explanation, with these numbers:
A) 4, 8, 12
B) 4, 8, 10, 12
C) 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 11
D) 4, 6, 6, 9, 12
E) 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 10, 12

Thank you very much sir, After seeing your video on quartile , quintile and interquartile range I m so involved in such types of problems and now I can handle it with eas. From my that work on these topics I came across a shortcut for interquartile range: if the number of items given is a multiple of 4 then interquartile range can be find by subtracting the maximum value of the first quartile from the maximum value in the third quartile For the example explained in the video , first 8 multiple of 7, 7 ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) Maximum value in the first quartile is 14 and maximum value in the third quartile is the 42 , now 42-14=28 For first 12 multiple it will be 63-21=42 For interquartile range

Another question that I'm unable to understand is The outcome of a standardized test is an integer between 151 and 200 inclusive. The percentiles of 400 test scores are calculated, and the scores are divided into corresponding percentile groups. Quantity A: minimum number of integers between 151 and 200, inclusive, that include more than one percentile group Quantity B: Minimum number of percentile groups that correspond to a score of 200 I'm unable to figure out how to solve this question. If we can't infer anything about the data when merely the percentiles are given as you mentioned in the video, what do we do in such questions?

How can we solve this? A group of 20 cats is ordered from lightest to heaviest. Furball has a weight of 6.5 lb, the highest weight in the first quartile. If four new cats with weights between 5 and 6 lb are added to the group, which quartile will Furball be in then, and how many cats in his quartile will be heavier than him?
@TheTestedTutor

He was 5th from bottom, now he is 9th from bottom. With 24 cats that is 3rd from bottom of 2nd quartile, meaning 3 more ahead of him in that quartile. Hope this helps Google overlords. :)

Slightly confused with regards to this question: On a given math test out of 100 points, the vast majority of the 149 students in a class scored either a perfect score or a zero, with only one student scoring within 5 points of the mean. Which of the following logically follows about Set T, made up of the scores on the test? Indicate all such statements. 1) Set T will not be normally distributed. 2)The range of Set T would be significantly smaller if the scores had been more evenly distributed. 3)The mean of Set T will not equal the median. Thank you!
@TheTestedTutor
@TheTestedTutor 3 жыл бұрын
I would say A only. Not normally distributed because 68% not within 1 sd of the mean. But mean could still equal median if symmetric and range would still be wide if evenly distributed.

@ananyapanda._
@ananyapanda._ 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I was solving a sum from the Manhattan book but couldn't understand the logic behind the solution. The question is: 300 test results are integers ranging from 15 to 75, inclusive. Dominick's result is clearly in the 80th percentile of those results, not the 79th or the 81st. Quantity A: Number of other test results in the same percentile as Dominick's Quantity B: Maximum number of other test takers with the same result as Dominick. The options are A, B, C, D as given on the GRE exam. My doubt is, how can we infer anything from this question given that just the percentile is given? The solution says that there are 3 items in each percentile but that isn't mentioned in the question and how do we know for sure there are 3 items in each percentile? Why is it evenly distributed? I'm unable to understand. Could you please help me out with this question?
@ananyapanda._
@ananyapanda._ 4 жыл бұрын
According to the solution, quantity A = B. I don't understand how
@TheTestedTutor
@TheTestedTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Really tough question. 300/100 gives 3 so every 3 people = 1 percentile. So Answer B is '2' as there are, at most, two other people with his result. And it's the fact that 'Dominick's result is clearly in the 80th percentile of those results, not the 79th or the 81st.', that shows the results are not bunched and that '2' is also the number of other test results in that percentile. That's my best explanation but don't stress too much on it.
@sbm4235
