The odd engagement interview where Charles says "What ever in love means" would have been a Red Flag for me, whether all the Pomp & invitations where sent out. Diana should have thrown that ring at him & called it off as soon as that interview was over. It was obviously doomed from the start. Had I started off a marriage with that hanging over my head I would have suffered mental illness. I'm sure that insecurity was a catalyst and it sounds like Diana either suffered from Bi-Polor disorder or PTSD!
