I’ve heard the stories of him phasing with himself, at 16:06 we have a great example of that. The ‘I wanna” doubled line phases with the main vocal. Insane!

I have always loved the way Freddy uses such a natural vibrato. Also, Marc Martel needs to be CHERISHED! He is an amazing vocal artist, and I truly respect his voice.

Freddie’s breaths and sighs are a true gem in this performance.

According to Brian May in his interview with Rick Beato the guitar teacher, they all used the piano first to introduce the song to the band. In Bo Rap they didn’t rehearse as the song was all in Freddie’s head and Brian listened to Freddie, then John would usually pick it up and Roger would start playing the drums. Then Brian would come up with his guitar part to sound almost as another voice to extend Freddie’s vocals as a part of the melody then hand it back to Freddie. The interview is fascinating. Great video! What you say about the way the sings using head resonance voice but keeping the voice back in his throat is something that I've notice before. I've tried to do it and sometimes I've been able to do it, but it's so difficult!!! I think Freddie did this kind of things without knowing that he was doing something great and very difficult. This is so cool! I’ve never seen a song (not to mention my favorite band, Queen!) broken down by each instrument, and how it was put together, hearing what each instrument was doing separately from the actual “whole” song…fascinating…and also lets me see just how much more complicated the drums and bass actually are. Also, the breakdown of Freddie’s voice, really cool. I’ve seen so many of his interviews, and I don’t think he specifically, imo, really thinks about how you describe breaking it down…I think he just sings it the way he feels like doing it…or making a sound he likes, and really emotionally feeling what he’s doing, as opposed to “how” he’s able to sing the way he does. What a gift to humanity he is. (Also, love how he said he wasn’t good at playing the piano…ummm…sounds pretty good to me, I’m hardly a piano expert, but to me, it always sounds great!) As an aside about this specific song, scientists evaluated different songs and studied humans (in experiments) as to what their emotional reactions were…and found that “Don’t Stop Me Now” was the song that created the most happiness in people…so essentially, this song will just make you feel happier than any other song…very cool study (sorry, I don’t have the citation.) Part of that vintage sound is the bleed of alternate takes that fill out any sterile sound. Gonna try using that in recording. Watching this and the Cobain video…I feel like it’s the sterility of more modern recordings that turn me off.

These videos are incredibly helpful, thank you Chris! There's something about Freddy that made me realize what a lot of singers including me tend to do, which is to "over-sing". Part of what made Freddy's singing so authentic are lots of phrases which are mixtures between singing and talking. He sounds very relatable because of that

As someone who’s been listening to Freddie’s voice since “Killer Queen” hit the Top 40 in 1974, I have never thought about whether or not he was trying to sound like anyone else perhaps who inspired his unique approach to singing. While I know Queen’s influences range from Led Zeppelin to The Beach Boys, Freddie’s singing doesn’t really try to imitate those groups’ vocalists. There was something i immediately fell in love about his voice when I first heard “Killer Queen” that touched my soul. Maybe it was his playfulness with all the shifts of expression between wispy and sultry, maybe it was hearing flanged vocals for the first time on “dynamite with a laser beam”, or those dastardly, “Killa…Killa…” BGVs on Verse 2, or wondering who or what a “Mowette A. Shondon” was! Freddie’s stage persona so perfectly matched his vocal characterizations, so much so that now it makes everyone else look like they’re doing bad imitations of him. Long live the sound and spirit of Freddie.

At around 6;20, Freddie's voice is heard with the piano track, its very far back in the left ear, but i can hear it very faintly and his breathes, dont know how youd isolate it like the bass vocals in the back bc of all the frequencies on the piano, but just thought its something cool to point out that you didnt pick up on, even tho you picked up on literally everytbing else 🤣 Great great video as always

There was so many overdubs on their tracks that they could create an epic sound unlike any other band of the time. Just listening to the backing track May, Taylor and Deacon could produce was just amazing. Bohemian Rhapsody backing track was just amazing.

According to many sources Queen recorded piano drums and bass first if it was a piano song or guitar drums and bass if it was a guitar song. In this case the bass was probably overdubbed after Freddie’s vocals were recorded

I don't think that guitar solo was comped. The change in tone happens when he goes to a higher string. That could be all it is (the amp or room responding differently to higher frequencies). It's also possible he just switched his pickup setting or hand position in the moment. It doesn't sound drastic enough to be an actual change in recording setup to my ear. I could easily be wrong.

Chris great video but I have another comment hoping you can clarify. This clarification I request is based on your videos. I get hoarse a lot. From your videos, I learn this hoarseness can be caused by too much air. Your videos on compression and Nasal & Compression seems to be the answer. One thing I have not found in your videos for Compression is proper breathing. It seems proper breathing is one key to compression, especially if you are going to add a subtle Nasal sound. I'd love to see a video that talks about Compression, Nasal and proper breathing to add more flavor to your voice and help prevent hoarseness. I need to lick this hoarseness, and I think your expertise is the key.

Do you know how I could do that head voice keeping it back? I use the head resonance technique but instead of leaving the tongue, mouth and throat relaxed and opened, I slightly close my mouth and throat, and take my lower jaw a bit forward. When you do this, you feel some tension in that area. Plus an extra of nasality. But I'm just telling what helps me to get that special sound. What do you think??? Regards.

Taylor’s drums on Jazz sound harsh, the brass sounds nasty too. One of the worst sounding drums on a Queen album. Roy Thomas Baker produced again after a few year’s absence. Baker was done with the complex multi tracking by then as he was working with The Cars.

Good video but your timing couldn't be any worse. Might be raw for some people in Britain mentioning the word Queen considering we had just lost her yesterday.
