2 fun facts. Elizabeth I banned nobles in her court from wearing cloaks so as they could draw their swords quicker if she or others in the court were attacked and she also banned people under a certain level of nobility from wearing red, silver, green, gold and purple. These were seen as royal colours because the silk used to make them cost a lot of money so shebonly deemed certain nobles worthy of spending the money on clothes in these colours.

@@j.b.2263 She defied social norms and proved that a woman could rule. During her speech at Tilbury (Spanish Armada) she said she has a body of a "weak and feeble woman but a stomach of a king", when James VI of Scotland ascended to the English throne, many people mocked him by saying Elizabeth was a King and James was a Queen (James was bisexual and he was very close with his male favourites/courtiers). No one expected Elizabeth to rule. Not henry. Not anyone. No man wanted to rule under a female monarch, so elizabeth as a master or PR (with walsinghams secret spy networtk) created this image "Glorianna" to manipulate her image for everyone all over the world as a divine godess that everyone needs to follow. When the English defeated the Spanish during the spanish armada, it helped Englands worldly image, Spain was the most powerful empire during that period, and to be obliterated by such a weak and insignificant country such as england was humiliating. it showed that England, an underestimated country, could be more powerful than the most powerful empire in the world if it was steered correctly by the right monarch. No one expected a woman could do this. During Elizabeth I's reign (1558-1603), the arts flourished, she was particularly fond of Shakespeare and other playrights. This was during Englands golden decade, privateers helped englands economy by trading and stealing spanish gold

I'm pretty sure that the "virgin" thing with Elizabeth wasn't meant to be taken literally, and was just for political propaganda since she wanted to remain unmarried and keep her power. It wasn't like her father Henry where she could openly bag anyone she wanted because she was in charge, whether she was of that disposition or not. Even as monarch, unfortunately, she was going to be judged differently as a woman.

Without her support, there was no chance for the Anglican Church to survive in the midst of the times which saw St. Barthomelew's Day Massacre. She also prevented England from becoming a battleground of Catholics & Protestants.
@Midlife_Manical_Mayhem
@Midlife_Manical_Mayhem 3 жыл бұрын
i wouldn't say she prevented it, she was on the tail end of that battle. it started with her father and mother. her brother chose jane grey as his heir to prevent catholic mary from inheriting it. that caused a bit of a battle. then after mary took the throne, she killed many protestants, and of course most of those behind jane's reign of 9 days. although the battle was still alive and well by elizabeth's reign, it did begin to temper a bit. james i/vi's grandson, james' second wife was a catholic and the country feared another catholic on the throne. therefore the parliament invited james' daughter mary and her husband/cousin, william of orange to "invade", which they did. at this point, catholics were barred from inheriting the british crown.
