January-February 1956.
Footage of excerpts of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain to the British colony of Nigeria between 28 January-16 February 1956. Nigeria was four years from becoming an independent nation.
The title of the Gaumont newsreel was "Queen Sees War Canoes".
Highlighted in the newsreel was the Queen's visit to parts of the cities of Port Harcourt and Lagos.
At Port Harcourt she watched a regatta of war canoes, and still in the Eastern Region, visited the Oji River Leprosy Settlement.
In Lagos she inaugurated the Apapa Wharf extension and visited Racecourse where she and the Duke of Edinbirgh were greeted by a crowd of 30,000 which included many school children.
Among her investitures was the knighting of Samuel Manuwa, the Chief Medical Adviser to the federation.

Wow 🤩 Amazing life that Queen Elizabeth led. To visit lepers in the Oji-River leprosy settlement is really out of this world. My dad - Dr Chiegboka worked at the Oji-River general hospital for years and looked after patients with leprosy and other tropical diseases. Oji-river was such an iconic little town but forgotten by the authorities of many military regimes. my amazing primary school took us to trips to the tannery, biscuit factory, AVOP vegetable oil factory and the Hydro-electric power station where a plaque of the queen’s 1956 visit is still visible. It was breathtaking as little kids to imagine that the Queen stood in the same spot at the far side of Oji in the old Anambra State. Awesome. RIP your majesty
