We reckon it’s because popular contemporary music has dumbed down people’s ears. There was a time when only really good musicians/singers made it into the charts. Now people listen to a lot of music that’s auto-tuned, with simple chord progressions. Don’t use our band’s post-punk music as an example please, none of us had had much musical education then except Stella, and even she was pretty green in the 1980s!. We love this version of Lush Life, and Strayhorn would have too, we are sure.

I agree that Johnny Hartman's version with Coltrane is ONE of the definitive performances of Lush Life. The other two are both from the divine queen, Sarah Vaughan, in 1956 and 1979. Latifah correctly studied Vaughan's earlier version of Lush Life in her preparation, and quite deftly re-created Sarah's melodic turnaround at the end of the song, making it her own: "...of those whose lives are lonely too." For me, this rendition is one of the latest definitive versions. And you can't ever go wrong with a stunning and brilliant Mervyn Warren arrangement, which he conducted in the studio.

This is a superb version of the song, a long classic for sure. Look for Donna Summer's excellent rendition of it as well on her album produced by Quincy Jones from 1982. It's stellar. It has been recorded by many vocalists throughout the years and is considered a workhorse of a song; Rickie Lee Jones, Natalie Cole, Esperanza Spalding and several others have all put their spin on this excellent and unique tune over the years. My personal favorite is Summer's, but Latifah's is a very very close 2nd. Thanks for sharing this here. It definitely proved that Queen Latifah (Dana Owens) can hold her own as a singer!

It is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life, as much as the lyrics as in the melody. Initially, the first time I heard it, it was in the version of Stephen Grappelli with the Big Band by Claude Bolling ... but recently I notice, in such beautiful lyrics. What to say ... Queen Latifah, sing this piece of music, and she does it infinitely... Grégory Alfonso García Morán, MD (Desde la Dama Gris de los Andes: Santafé de Bogotá, Colombia). "I used to visit all the very gay places Those come what may places Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life To get the feel of life From jazz and cocktails. The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces With distant gay traces That used to be there you could see where they'd been washed away By too many through the day Twelve o'clock tales. Then you came along with your siren of song To tempt me to madness! I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness Of a great love for me. Ah yes! I was wrong Again, I was wrong. Life is lonely again, And only last year everything seemed so sure. Now life is awful again, A trough full of hearts could only be a bore. A week in Paris will ease the bite of it, All I care is to smile in spite of it. I'll forget you, I will While yet you are still burning inside my brain. Romance is mush, Stifling those who strive. I'll live a lush life in some small dive And there I'll be, while I rot With the rest of those whose lives are lonely, too.. A week…"

And you thought she could not cover this kind of sophisticated material!?!? I confess . . . but then I saw her do this in the film and she floored me. Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life requires a sense of tragic drama but with a voice unstrangled by booze and cocktails. Sing it Queen!

She sure is underrated. I really like her voice and was quite surprised when she started singing classics like this. She's so capable.

The Queen absolutely takes it here. I tried to listen to them all, Gaga, Nancy Wilson, Strayhorn, Nat King Cole, Donna Summer, Natalie Cole, etc. Amazingly, she handles this with style, sophistication, and you can tell....personal reference. Truly amazing. My only fear, is that with current sound engineering technology, we could be listening to the audible equivalent to Photoshop and not know it.

+Mike Smith For me, the canonical performance is still Johnny Hartman's with McCoy Tyner on Johnny's album with Trane. Then comes Sammy Davis Jr, then the Queen. She's really, really good, but the "D" section's a bit overstated!

That always scares me too now days! No picture is real anymore, they're all "Photoshopped" or by Adobe, I don't like unreal things, I want it straight from the artist -- Latifah does this very well, one of my favorites on this song.

You also have been smoking something... You can't mention her in the same breath with Nat King Cole who recorded it first.

Did you listen to the two shots Ella Fitzgerald took at it? 1957 with Oscar Peterson and 1977 with Joe Pass? They both have influence on this reading. There's been a lot about many of the recordings you mentioned that merit consideration in the choices Latifah and Mervyn Warren make here. I'm one of those people who hasn't gotten to hear Latifah singing it live (unless she did it on SNL while she was pushing _The Dana Owens Album_ and I missed it) but I don't remember hearing her having much trouble holding it down as a live singer, though "Lush Life" is definitely a different animal from other non-rap songs she's done. She would have had an easier time shooting this sequence in the film once the recording was already made, that's for sure. I have always been a little disappointed that this sequence was cut down for the final film, and that there's not many complete songs performed by Latifah in the film, but she's only a supporting character in it, mostly to establish the club scenes.
