The Queen Mother was very brave during the Second World War. I can quote her even today when it suggested that then Princesses Elizabeth & Margaret be sent to the safety of Canada. “The Princesses won’t leave without me, I won’t leave without the King, the King won’t leave.”

In 1952 The Quuen Mother had built a small seperate chapel, for her and her husband, off of the main St Georges Chapel. The ashes of Princess Margaret are there too. The other Royal burial ground is Frogmore(about 2 miles from Windsor)this has many graves of minor royals, and has the graves of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor(Edward VII) It also has the mausoleum of Prince Albert& Queen Victoria. The Queen Mother's funeral was exactly 50 years to the day after George VI's.

The "square"(as you call it) is actually the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior from World War 1. As a memorial to the troops that died,an anonymous dead soldier was plucked from the battlefield and buried(with much ceremony) there. It was meant to say to all those that had lost their sons etc this might be your family member buried here. When the Queen Mother left the Abbey after getting married she laid her wedding bouquet on the tomb.

Even though they became the British Royal Family, the Hanoverians continued to marry royalty of German origin, including Victoria, who married her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Regardless, every British monarch since George III has been born in the UK and has spoken English as their first language. George V broke away from the German past in 1917 by relinquishing his family's German titles, renaming them "Windsor", and allowing his children to marry British men and women.

@quidwitch That situation reminds me of my grandmother. Her mother died in her 98th year in April 2005, while her sister was dying of lung cancer. Her sister died in November 2005. It was one hell of a 75th birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas that year. She deteriorated considerable after that, though she is still alive today, she aged considerably from that point on. She was close to both of them.

But it was a big deal, the Royal family had never refused sanctuary before, they were committing themselves to fate, to add morale to their country. King George was a massive symbol of morale throughout the War. The fact that he and his family stayed behind in the most heavily bombed city in the world showed huge guts! Buckingham Palace was bombed twice during wartime, almost killing the King and Queen. I agree that she was remarkable, especially for the age in which her husband was King.

This relaxing of the marriage customs allowed for the union of the future George VI and Queen Mother to take place. This means that Elizabeth II is half Scottish on her mother's side and half English/German on her father's side. As for Philip, he was taken in by his mother's family in the UK after the Greek monarchy fell, and attended school there before spending two terms at a German school whose Jewish headmaster fled to Scotland and founded Gordonstoun, where Philip finished his education.

Philip served in the Royal Navy, became a naturalized British citizen, renounced his Greek and Danish titles, and adopted the surname of his mother's family, Mountbatten by the time he married Elizabeth. They're 3rd cousins descending from Victoria, so they have some German stock, but consider themselves to be British. Such stock will be further diluted as members of the family continue to marry British people since the rationale for marrying foreign (preferably German) royals is now nonexistent

First, it's called the British monarchy because it reigns over Britain. The German influence began with the accession in 1714 of George I, a German prince who was the nearest Protestant relation to Queen Anne (as a great-grandson of James VI and I). He started the succession of the Hanoverians, who reigned until 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria. Her son succeeded her as a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His son then changed it to Windsor due to ant-German sentiment during WWI.
