Mary Austin once said in an interview that Freddie’s songs are autobiographical and if you listen closely to the songs he wrote you can hear that especially in the last several as he was coming to terms with his death. He never complained. The band got even closer and protected him once they were aware. His final album was Innuendo and the last song he wrote is A Winters Tale. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful and masterful just as he was. With a five octave singing range, the fastest vibrato ever recorded, plus double jointed long fingers -perfect for the piano I think he was born to create music and fate led him to his fellow perfectionist musicians thus Queen. More Queen Rad! ❤

This song is special with both Freddie singing it as well as Brian singing it. The lyrics are amazing and it is so cool that both versions are awesome, although, the depth of Freddie's voice blows me away. I remember Brian singing this at the Freddie Mercury tribute. He said it 'was the best he had to offer'! Not true as Brian had so many wonderful tunes to offer up!! Sad and profound!!

“I loved working with Freddie to do that vocal (1989). We were aware that the song was becoming something different, and it meant something different. We were all aware of it. We obviously knew Freddie’s days were probably limited barring a miracle. So the song started to feel like something different. And we didn’t shy away from making it very big, very Queen-like. And I like it." The song itself stretches back to 1986-7, when Brian wrote it with two friends, songwriters Elizabeth Lamers and Frank Musker. He was in Los Angeles at the time, “far away from home” and in a “tangled state of mind”, trying to find some release from a period of profound personal upheaval. “

I prefer Brian's version of this song which will rip your heart out. Brian is having difficulty holding back his tears in his video, even though it was made years later than this one. It must be difficult to write a song and want it to be sung one way but for it to be a Queen song, Freddie had to make it his own. Please do react to the Brian May video version because it really brings the whole thing home. The first time this song was ever heard by the public was when Brian sang it at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Though Queen recorded this, Brian had written it with a few friends one evening so the royalties became a difficult issue so it didn't make it on that particular album as was intended. Because of Brian's actions, his first marriage was crumbling which was heartbreaking for everyone concerned. He and his wife tried to try again and again but the trust was broken and Brian's guilt was such that there was no way to put the pieces back together. Brian and his wife split for a while, she took their children and went to live in their vacation home in California and Brian got involved with another woman. Again he and his wife tried to work things out because they had two children and they still loved one another but it was too late, neither of them could make it work and Brian was now deeply involved with another woman who would later become his second and current wife. To make things even worse, Brian's wife became pregnant during one of their "trying to make it work" periods and was carrying their third child. Brian was heartbroken and as he said in the song, "every way I go I've got to lose." Brian's children have always been his first priority and he was completely committed to being a husband and a father, until the months of loneliness on the road and then being in the studio whenever they weren't on the road, compounded by fame and all that obvious temptation took its toll (all three of the married members of Queen had serious marital problems at this time, so it wasn't just Brian). The fact that Brian was not living in the same home as his children and that he was not able to be involved in the third pregnancy was killing him, along with his guilt of completely messing up what had been an inseparable relationship he had always shared with his wife. All of this plunged Brian so low that he was seriously suicidal. For his children's sake, he sought help for that which most likely saved his life. When you watch his own video, you really feel all of that. Brian has been very transparent about his infidelity and how it pretty much ruined everything he had always wanted in his life and violated all that he expected of himself, up to that point. Once Brian did sing this song at the Tribute Concert, the song took on a secondary meaning that could have been a parallel to Freddie's situation and ultimate death. Thank you for your reaction.

Dear Sherry, you explain the whole situation so very well! Always love your comments! ❤ What a horrible situation for his wife, the children and Brian. I'm so thankful that he searched for help and got help. For me it's clear to see that for example "It's late" is about him, his wife and his current wife. I also think, Queen often communicates through their songs with each other. Sometimes it's hard to find the right words but music can do the job better than anything else. Think of "I want to break free", "The Show must go on", "Save me", "Somebody to love", Brighton Rock, Liar, not to forget Bohemian Rhapsody, Liliy of the valley, Nevermore, Mother Love..... and so on. It's all about their lives in most of the songs. Because of that, they never wanted to explain the lyrics, especially Freddie. But this only my personal opinion. And to quote Freddie himself: If you can see it, dear, than it's there....... (maybe not the exact words)
@sherryheim5504

@@ulrikealtmann4655 Thank you for your compliments and your own opinion seems spot on to me. Brian certainly wrote about his life and Freddie, though very private, particularly about his young life and his years in boarding school, I believe opens tiny windows to all that he experienced in those years, through his songs. From all that I have read, I feel that Freddie was reborn when he arrived in London. I think he experienced a sudden freedom that had eluded him as a child in Zanzibar and certainly during his years in an English boarding school in India. I think Freddie bloomed once he got to London and entered college and of course, the music scene was bustling there at that time, which fit quite neatly into Freddie's vision for himself. He heard Brian and Roger play with their band Smile and knew that these were the two he needed to team up with in order to pursue his visions and as soon as Tim left Smile, Freddie was not taking no for an answer to fill that open space. Freddie was not yet a polished singer by any means and if that had been all he had to offer, Roger and Brian probably wouldn't have chosen him, but Freddie's piano skills won them over. Together they made a demo tape and when Freddie heard it back, he would not have any of it. He said that is not how I want to sound so he practiced until he found the vocals he wanted and the rest is history...except for finally finding John Deacon after trying several bass players that just didn't fit in for one reason or another.

@@sherryheim5504 I could talk to you for hours....... Exactly, you are spot on in everything! 👍 I always have to think of Freddie's years in boarding school. It breaks my heart. Alone, as a 8 year old, sent away by his parents. I read, that Freddie always desperately begged his mum, after spare holidays, not to send him back to boarding school. I really don't know what to think about it. There are studies, that if children at that young age, been sent away for such a long time, suffer their whole life the loss of love, trust and shelter. And that they will not be able to form a stabil relationship, because they always had to care and survive for themselves. There is no more trust and energy left for a real partnership. He never or seldom talked about this years as you know, and I think for a good reason or reasons. Maybe he was abused, maybe he was called a liar, when he explained to his parents or school leaders what happend to him and they did not believe him. He failed the last class and they took him home. I, as a mother myself, would no be able to send my child away for this unbelievable long time. It would affect me in a horrible way. This is so so sad. Sherry, what do you think about his boarding school years? (Please excuse my English!) ❤ Greetings from Germany
@sherryheim5504
@sherryheim5504 Жыл бұрын
@@ulrikealtmann4655 The reason Freddie's parents sent him to boarding school was because there was absolutely no future for their son in Zanzibar. His mom cried for days but knew there was really no choice. There were "things" that happened to him at boarding school that were horrible but his parents had no other option so when he told them about it, they said talked it down and said that they didn't believe him. I think doing this really destroyed his mom, she missed her boy and knew he was not in the most secure of places but they just had no other options. I think this is what the song Liar is about and why Freddie would say to Brian "My mom is in the audience tonight, I will have to be sure to throw in a few extra swear words." Brian never understood why Freddie would want to disrespect his mom in that way, but I think it was her and his dad saying they didn't believe him when the predators were abusing Freddie, that made him want to get even in this way. Freddie mentioned abandonment, but would never speak on it, he mentioned a certain school teacher who was a predator but he wouldn't elaborate on that either. Others said that Freddie would cry in his bed at night when he was young and at boarding school. My heart aches for what he endured. From what I have read, Freddie only saw his parents one time in those 8 or 9 years he was at boarding school. His parents simply did not have the money to visit or to fly Freddie home and back again. India is a harsh life and I am sure in those times, Freddie saw things that were horrific but just became commonplace. I believe this is why he didn't like the idea of concerts to raise money for the poor and suffering in those types of countries. He knew that though you might feed them for a day or a week, nothing would ever really change for them. It wasn't that he lacked compassion, it was just that he lived within that hellhole of a society and grew up there. Can you imagine walking down the street and every day seeing people laying there dying and knowing that there is no way to save them? Freddie deserves every bit of legendary acclaim he has and will receive. He lived through hell and made it, just to become that Legend.

As a Queen fan for 37 years love your reactions. This song tells a story of how Brian May was torn between two loves (and as the song goes the love he was potentially leaving behind, which was his first wife because at the time 86/87 he had also met his second (and current) wife Anita Dobson. His feelings were as a failure as a father (as he had three children by Chrissie - 1st wife). Obviously, Brian May wrote this song and he also sings it very well. However, he professes to always having the voice of Freddie in mind when writing/composing it. The two versions are both outstanding. A lot of people try and tie Freddie's poor health and untimely death to it but it wasn't the case, it was how Brian was feeling at that moment, he didn't want to do it but he was simply in love with Anita, and he "wish he had read the signs" and was "heading for disaster" and basically he had "too much love" and on hell of a massive decision to make "too much love will kill you if you can't make up you're mind" (and feeling all the other emotions in the lyrics). Keep up the Queen Sundays. Stay safe from Manchester UK x
