Queen Victoria’s 9 children gave her 42 grandchildren. Among their ranks were a king, an Emperor, 6 queens, 2 married couples, an embarrassing number of Nazis and many captivating characters. They fought on both sides of world wars and spanned 122 years of history, the first, Wilhelm being born in 1859 and the last, Alice, dying in 1981. Today of the approximately 28 monarchies that still survive throughout the world, five are occupied by descendants of Victoria. As briefly as possible, here are the stories of Queen Victoria’s 42 fascinating Grandchildren.
In this episode the children of
Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-1878)
Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)

Alice’s schizophrenia diagnosis is highly contested especially since she was essentially locked up in an asylum after having a nervous breakdown because of the many tragedies that befell her family. She was born congenitally deaf and it’s actually through her mother’s intelligence and devotion to her children that she noticed it early on and helped her learn to read lips and use sign language in both English and German. I personally don’t think she had schizophrenia and especially back then that term was thrown around and misdiagnosed a lot. That coupled with her deafness, her being a woman, and the wit and courage she exhibited throughout the remainder of her life make me highly doubt the validity of her diagnosis.

Having studied many of the children and grandchildren myself, there are some bits of information here that are stated as facts, yet not proven. For example, Prince Philip's mother was committed to mental asylums by her mother, who was embarrassed by her daughter. But, when Alice was able to finally escape after years, she did amazing acts service for the poor and oppressed. Her story alone is amazing.

What is interesting is that while many of Queen Victoria's grandchildren died in early childhood, all 9 of her pregnancies resulted in live births and all of her children survived to adulthood and produced children themselves. Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, her 8th child and youngest son, was the youngest to die, at 30, but was the father to the last Duke of Saxe-Comburg Goetha, Edward.

Keep in mind that George V and the Tsar are childhood friends and have a very close bond. Just cold man... But probably thats one of the reasons why British monarcy is still exist until today, I mean, its gonna be a bad PR if he tooked them, causing public roar and possible dethrone by his own ppl.

Russian historian in the thread with some additions: Elizabeth married Alexander III's younger brother (and Nicholas II's uncle) Sergey Alexandrovich, but in the evening of the wedding they both gave vows of celibacy -- there marriage was never consummated, which is why they never had their own children. Church claims it was because of their piety: Elizabeth was clearly a very pious woman and an extremely devoted Eastern Orthodox, though you can say it about her husband. Sergey was a frequent guest to several gay brothels and lived a pretty promiscuous life, which became a big thing for Moscow high-class gossipers. He was also a tyrant in Moscow, really fighting the labor movement, which is why he was murdered by radical socialist terrorists in 1905. The children they've adopted were not orphans. Sergey's brother Paul (Pavel) married a daughter of the Greek king (she was Duke of Edinburgh's aunt), but she died after the birth of her second child Dimitri Pavlovich. After that, Pavel declared he wants to marry his divorced mistress, but this marriage would be considered morganatic (equal), therefore excluding Pavel and any of his future children from line of succession. Pavel got into a big argument with his Emperor-nephew about it and decided to live the country. Nicholas II, as the Head of the House, decided that his older children (Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich), who are still in line of succession, should not be influenced by such a father and the children were sent to Grand Duke Sergey and Elizabeth, who didn't have children themselves. Maria Pavlovna later married the second son of Gustav V, King of Sweden, though the marriage wasn't happy and they ended up divorcing (pretty rare thing for royals that time) in 1914. Dimitri Pavlovich became one of the most famous Russian royals at that time, particularly because of his participation in the murder of Rasputin (even though Dimitri wasn't even in the same room with Rasputin while he was shot, Dimitri was the one who had thrown Rasputin's body into a river), but he was also a great friend of Coco Chanel and he introduced her to perfume designer who designed Chanel #5. He married a daughter of an American railroad tycoon and their son was the Mayor of Palm Beach, Florida in 1993-2000. Grand Duchess Elizabeth has founded a big monastery after the death of her husband and became a nun herself. In 1992 she and Varvara (a woman, who was like a friend and a secretary to Elizabeth when Elizabeth was the head of a monastery; Varvara, as a faithful servant, declined to live the sight of Elizabeth, have spent months in house arrest and in prison with her and was later executed with Elizabeth) were both officially declared saints by Russian Orthodox Church (later on, ROC gave sainthood almost to every Romanov who died from bolshevik hands, but Elizabeth is one of those, who were declared saints not only due to the martyrdom, but also due to pious life). Nowadays, there are more than 20 Orthodox churches in the world, which are erected in honor of Saint Reverend Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth.

Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich, who married Victoria (daughter of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha duke; she is known in Russia as Victoria Melita -- by her first and second names), was the son of the third son of Alexander II and no one ever thought that he'd ever be of any significance to a line of succession. His marriage with Victoria Melita was pretty scandalous, because marrying a divorcee was forbidden and, moreover, Victoria Melita divorced and ruined the reputation of her ex-husband, who happened to be full brother of Nicholas II's wife. Cyril and his possible children were kicked out of line of succession in 1905, when Cyril was actually #3 in line of succession -- after Nicholas II's son Alexey and Nicholas II's brother Mikhail, whose possible children were also disqualified from succession due to being born in morganatic marriage, which is why Cyril had big chances of succession (Nicholas II would not have more sons and Cyril will be the next tsar after Mikhail). In 1907 Nicholas II acknowledged the marriage between Cyril and Victoria Melita, but... he didn't specify whether on not Cyril and his children are back in the line of succession. Moreover, Cyril's father Vladimir was married to Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who was refusing to convert to Russian Orthodoxy for decades. So, even though in terms of civil heads of Russia Cyril and his brothers were legitimate, in the eyes of the church they were bastards -- and if the male descendant line of Alexander III died out, the church would support the male descendant of the 5th son of Alexander II (the 1st and 4th sons of his died without children and the 3rd one was Cyril's father) -- Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich, the conspirator against Rasputin, also pretty popular among nobles and a friend of soon-to-be Emperor Mikhail Alexandrovich. The rivalry between Cyril Vladimirovich and Dimitri Pavlovich was a ticking bomb. But in 1917 Revolution stroke and Nicholas II abdicated and declared his brother Mikhail the new tsar and Mikhail also abdicated. Dimitri Pavlovich has never declared himself a claimant to the throne, but Cyril Vladimirovich made much worse -- he declared his support for revolution, started talking about the great perspectives of the republican rule (which made all the Romanovs think of him as traitor) and... left Russia right before Bolshevist coup. Dozens of his relatives were slaughtered in Russia, but when everyone who could be in front of him in line of succession died he declared himself the Emperor, which made a huge rift in Romanov family. Later on, he and his heirs were even changing succession laws, so that only descendants of Cyril could inherit. Most of other members of Romanov family never supported Cyril's or his descendants' claims, official opinion of the union of such members claims that each descendant of House Holstein Gottorp Romanov had at some point married morganatically, therefore if the monarchy in Russia is restored the monarchs would not be Romanovs.

@@wyacheslawkodanev2107 Yours is the most accurate comment about a historical topic that I have every seen on KZfaq. Sadly, as you can tell by their inane comments, most of the people who watch this video know too little about European history and the relationships of the reigning families to appreciate your explanations. I am afraid that I must include the narrator of this video. She slaughters German names, makes factual mistakes, and seems to know very little about geography. For example, she transforms Viktoria of Saxen-Coburg-Gotha into "Viktoria Melette of Saxe- CoBERG, claims that Ferdinand succeeded his father (instead of his UNCLE) as King of Romania, and changes the Bukovina to "Bolkovia."

George and Nicholas were first cousins through their mothers, but they didn't marry each other, obviously! And their respective fathers were not related or, if they were, it was a very, very distant relationship, probably several generations ago, if at all. The English royal family had little, if any, family connections to the Czars until Queen Victoria's descendants. They looked alike because their mothers were sisters. That's it.

Marriages didn't have anything to do with feelings or decency. Be glad that they were at least allowed to try to get to meet someone and potentially be attracted to and get to know a person and fall in love with that person and have it matter before getting married, even if that was your relative. But then you still have to marry someone "acceptable". Sometimes even men have soulmates and yearn to be with them and that can cause trouble. One obvious example: Charles has always loved Camilla yet he was were discouraged from marrying her, and he needed to be dutiful and marry someone else deemed acceptable so that's what he did. He tried but he could no longer deny his true love for her and she for him so he did what kings in particular have always done. He made her his mistress. And then like Louis XIV of France did, later on when he was able to he married her. People are so much happier when they are allowed to marry who they love.
