As others have said it's about the fist Highlander movie. It's the other side of the coin from "Princes of the Universe". "Born to be kings, princes of the universe" - but being immortal means you see your friends and family - and even the love of your life - die, so "who wants to live forever?". You need to watch the movie to fully understand the song

Look up the Highlander soundtrack, Queen was asked to do the music and they got to see the movie without a musical score, they left the movie and the four guys wrote the entire soundtrack in less than two hours according to Brian May.

This was one of my all time favorites from the Highlander soundtrack (from "It's A Kind Of Magic" album). You really need to see the movie, but stay away from Highlander 2 and the other sequels. The song is all about how being an immortal is a bit of a curse, because you live on, but you see all you love grow old and die. It's a bit of a theme in the movie and TV show, besides chopping heads off and getting the power, wisdom, knowledge, and strength of other immortals. :D "There can be only one!"

Queen isn't just a band of musicians, but wizards! their musical power over the soul and crowds in general is just pure magic, plain and simple! for now, as long as Queen and there are people like Dr. Brian May ( phd in astrophysics, who by the way is one of the smartest, coolest, sweetest, most talented, patient and compassionate people on the planet you'll ever want to meet) in this world, than I'm happy! btw, Brian has such an underrated singing voice. In the softer and a little folksy direction, I highly recommend 39, by Dr. Brian May who sang lead vocals. Its a ballad about space travel and Einstein's theory of relativity/clock paradox-if you travel to the speed of light, your clock could say you've been gone a year, but on earth, it could be that 1 or 2 hundred years have gone by. Basically its a 70's precursor to Interstellar in less than 5 minutes, but Dr. May says the movie was way off. When he wrote the song, he thought the concept of interplanetary colonization sounded cool, but not so much now, given how our own planet is so screwed up. Its an awesome song.

So this song was written for the movie Highlander, along with several other songs, to the point that their album A Kind of Magic is the unofficial Highlander soundtrack. You should do all the Highlander songs! They're "A Kind of Magic", "Princes of the Universe", "Gimme the Prize", "One Year of Love" and "Don't Lose Your Head". All of them wrote at least one each: Roger wrote "A Kind of Magic" and "Don't Lose Your Head", Brian wrote this and "Gimme the Prize", Freddie wrote "Princes of the Universe" and John wrote "One Year of Love".

Now you gotta check out the movie Highlander. This song was one of the sweetest ones for the movie, but was a bittersweet moment for Freddie. If you look at him, you'll notice he is thinner and more frail-looking than he was in earlier videos - this would be when he'd been diagnosed with HIV and had learned he was dying. The whole song is a bittersweet acceptance of Freddie's approaching death. He died way too soon, taken from us all by that horrible disease. I can imagine that when David Bowie died, he and Freddie must've been making some epic music and talking for hours on end.

The song flash was written for the soundtrack of the movie "Flash Gordan". Im sure you will regognize it, it has been sampled countless times over the years. The sad part is Freddie singing this and then finding out he is headed down the path of not living much longer. It makes this song so much more than just a movie song. Brian May singing the beginning he wasn't sure if he would have to sing the whole song at one point.

There is a duality to this song, the song was written for the "Highlander" move, I think number 3, but it is also Freddie's anthem in a way. This was one of his LAST songs/performances , he passed away from AIDS shortly after this. His love was singing and making music, I bet he wished he could do it forever. As a gay man back in the late 60's - 70's (as we all know how that was accepted), Freddie had to sing songs to please the populous. If he was alive now a days, we would have the same EPIC style that was his and his alone, but with more feeling. In my opinion. I was raised on Queen as still hold them in my all time top 3 favorite groups. The comment is 4 month old, but just saw you reaction .... I will try to keep up. HAHA. And Billy Jerkins comment about "Princes of the Universe" again, is from "Highlander"

What was sad is that Freddy did know that he didn't have very long when he did that video. He did it for Highlander.. it was a television show and the movie. He much like you thought about living forever I don't think he wanted to live forever but I do think he would have liked to have more time he left us way too soon. But he always liked Opera and rock and roll and thought why can't rock and Opera be more alike? So he created epic ballads. That many would be jealous over for many years some of them were silly like I ride my bicycle or whatever but in some of them were really cool and deep. But everybody still remembers Queen because they were amazing.

I think if I could have had immortality throughout other ages in history (as exemplified in the Highlander films or the series) I might would have liked it....at least on some level. Think of all the inventions you would have seen coming into fruition. Think of all the strides in human rights etc that you would have seen. But regardless of when immortality would take place (assuming you were able to gain it) it would still suck a little bit. Think about your parents, you siblings, your kids, your best friends....think about what it would be like to wake up one day and look around and realize that you have outlived EVERYBODY you ever cared about and that no matter how many times you might fall in love with a new person over the ages, if you ever had any kind of heart to begin with, you will never really get over outliving those people.
