Queer artists and culture played significant roles in the development and direction of both punk and industrial music, wielding an influence on the genres more directly than perhaps any other musical style. And when it comes to industrial music, you would not be out of line to suggest it was birthed from the queer community.

An enjoyable and enlightening video. Over here in the UK musicians took an active role in opposition to the anti LGBTQ Section 28 legislation passed in 1988. I was also reminded of the role of filmmaker Derek Jarman in particular "Jubilee". Cheers Mike

Thanks for watching! I’ve had more opportunities to see Jarman’s films recently, fascinating catalog. First one I ever watched was Wittgenstein. I even read the bloody Blue and Brown Books after. I could’ve mentioned Tom Robinson as an early punk pioneer for gay rights, maybe I should have.

Interesting video. My experience as a straight young punk here in Vancouver, Canada: I started going to gigs and clubs in the early '80s, and there was always a close connection between the gay/queer scene and the punks. Both were outsiders looking for safe and accepting venues. The gay clubs played the best music (industrial, post-punk, new wave) and attracted a big punk crowd. A couple of influential artists I'd add to your list, Pete Shelley (Ever Fallen In Love, and Homosapien) and in Canada Carole Pope of Rough Trade. Rough Trade's openly queer songs "High School Confidential" and "All Touch" got huge airplay on commercial radio up here.

Thanks for watching! I have Shelley’s 12-inch single for Homosapien. Yet to find the full album. We reviewed the album on the Guncles.

Jim Thirwell, had many sex scenes with women on scree, including the famous short movies of Richard Kern with Lydia Lunch. I'm npt sure it's fair to call Genesis trans either. He certainly wasn't during the TG, and I don't think he identified as trans, ever. But I might be wrong there. Cabaret Voltaire's earliest recordings used tape, but also saxophone and bass. All in all, I think your premise is a stretch, as the earliest actors of the industrial scene (TG, Cabs, Monte Cazzaza, WHitehouse, NWW, Zoviet France, etc, only had one individual queer back then, Peter Christopherson. ANd he didn't even play it during TG). It was about transgression, in many forms, but gender and sexual identity was not that much of a concern in the early days.

I couldn’t find much information on Thirwell, so yes, that was a wild guess on my part. But I found several sources that referred to P’Orridge as trans. They were certainly gender-nonconforming, and that falls into the queer spectrum.

@@calvinwazoo Again, at what point would Genesis transition, if it is even that that they did? (he never refered to himself as a she but as a they, as his transitoining was about "fusioning" with his wife)

@@calvinwazoo Did I? ^^ Either way, I don't think rooting the birth of the original industrial scene in gay or queer culture is accurate. There was an inherant macho aspect to the early days, and Jim Thirwell is a good exemple, as are Laibach. SPK and Severed Heads are also important, and also had the bondage /media criticism / images of violence and death, but no queerness.I understand the appeal, though, but ultimately, it is a little revisionist of a take. But it could make for an interesting discussion

Jim Thirwell had an love relation and were an couple with Lydia Lunch in the mid 80s till early 90s. I met them both in 1984 and interviewed them together and that was the strangest interview I ever did and at the end Lunch and Thirwell had an discussion about the size of the dicks of mexicans.
