Quest for a Mile: Federal Match 168gr vs 175gr vs 185gr. Better than Norma?

In post, I noticed that the rifle may have been slightly canted which could have caused the inaccuracy during the 185gr. However, when I do go for a mile, it will be free hand like seen today (but probably with a way better bipod) so I want to get as good as I can free hand versus in a sled. I think I'm coming along pretty nicely.
Moving forward, Norma 168gr and 175gr and the Federal 168gr will get a full ballistic run down thru my rifle and see what's ultimately best.
Thanks for watching!

Another little piece of gear that would really help is a bubble level to eliminate any cant and be sure your reticle is level. It will matter a lot at longer ranges.

I had all kinds of problems getting good groups till i folded the bypod and shot off a bag instead. Way better off the bench. On the ground the bypod was better but it must been the recoil on the hard bench with the bypod that was messing things up. Give it a try

Alright. Time to get a lead sled. Best way to find what that rifle likes most is going to be a long vid or series of vids. Get a box of various types of ammo to try, get a couple 5 rd mags and set up the lead sled. Eliminate as many variables as you can including yourself. Time consuming as it may be, the results will be outstanding

@@andrewmconrad We also agree, at minimum you should be shooting prone with a rear sand bag. Two other friendly pieces of advice I would share after our 2 year journey of LR stuff is 1. take 5 consecutive shots without coming off the gun, every time you come up to look at velocity you are having to reset and the angle(side to side) changes ever so slightly; stay on the gun! 2. Put three rounds into the dirt after changing to a new ammo, before you start shooting for that group, this will make a larger difference than you think.

Anyway, 168 grains seem to be a good standard for 308 caliber, with most of ammo brands. Usually, light bullets are more accurate than heavier. Heavier bullets are used for hunting, or for very long range (800 meters) cause they are less sensitive to the wind (but they obviously drop more quickly) . Cartridges are tested on 24 or 26" barrels by the manufacturers so, with shorter barrels the results can be a bit more random, for example the powder can be not completly burned in the barrel... 24" is the minimum standard for 308 to be sure that the powder is completely burned, and the rotation speed is optimized with long barrels.

Several areas to look at. You appear to have too much trigger finger on the trigger. Have the trigger shoe on the center of the pad on your last joint. Finger should form an L. It looks like yours is wrapped around the trigger. That will greatly affect your L-R impacts. Also, shoot at the bottom of your natural respiratory pause. That will affect our vertial impacts. Tighten up the bipod. Too much slop there. True offhand shooting is without any sort of support. You have a bipod, so this is not freehand/offhand shooting. Regardless of the ammo, these groups should be much tighter. All are match ammo, so easily capable of 1moa groups. Your poi will differ between ammo, but the groups should be relatively consistent. Check your paralax. That will throw off your groups if your head moves, which you are doing since you are coming off the rifle between shots. This keeps your reticle and target on the same focal plane. This means your reticle and target move together when you move your head. Take 1 at a time and get it as close to perfect as you can to eliminate that variable. No need for a sled. This is all you. Rifle is more accurate. Also stick with 1 ammo type. Same manufacturer, bullet weight and type. Once that is dialed in, compare it to other types. That way you have a solid baseline.

Everything you did while shooting was fine. If ur looking to tighten the groups then put a bag under ur buttstock. All the different grain rounds will come out in different spots. Not sure why u seemed disappointed. Thats why you zero scope to one particular round, then any different gr bullet or manufacturer you create an 'offset'

In my opinion, I think you should strongly consider loading your own ammo to reach your goal. Each one of those bullets are capable of far better accuracy, they just need to be tuned to your rifle specifically. When you load your own ammo, you control the seating depth powder charge.

Nice!. Many shooters agree that their rifles have to like the cartridge that is being shot. I found a cartridge that my 6.5 creedmoor likes, several years ago. Recently I purchased a Christensen Arms AR-10 DMR in .308. I am trying a lot of different cartridges (brand and grain), but I have not been able to get any Norma ammunition yet. I wanted my rifles to like Hornady, because I can usually find them a little less expensive per round than the Federal Premium, but they both definitely like the Federal Premium Match rounds better. I will have to catch up on your videos to see if you have achieved the 1 mile shot with your .308 yet. @@andrewmconrad

@paulkonar7842 thanks. I agree that each rifle likes a certain ammunition. I tried a lot with my 308 and got out to 800 yards with 168gr federal sierra matchking, but that was it. Then the range where I shoot went under some changes and put that on the back burner. I finished my 6.5 creedmoor (same setup really, just a longer barrel, 22") and it really liked 140gr hornady eld match. I took it out to only 700 yards thus far, but I'm working my way out there

The truth be told, you are afraid of shooting…flinching and more likely jerking the trigger. The first shot is a good one but the next shots are going away. I had learned to shoot a semiautomatic rifle correctly unlike a bolt action rifle…pause some seconds allowing the rifle to come to rest everything stops moving BCG into the buffer tube forward picking up a new round only seconds to do this operation. Snipers Hide has a video on how to shoot a semi-auto.
