Chapter 4, Craft and Practice with Malcolm Gladwell - Questlove and Malcolm Gladwell cover the topic of practice and Malcolm shares the true meaning of his 10,000 hours theory, how it’s been misunderstood in the past and how getting better at your craft can involve going beyond your mastery to take on new challenges.
Quest for Craft, a web series from The Balvenie and Questlove, is now live on our KZfaq channel. Subscribe now to watch the episodes as they release this fall. The Balvenie has been perfecting the craft of whisky making for nearly 130 years and, throughout that period, has remained fascinated by the creative processes, often-obsessive human attributes and deep intrinsic values that elevate something from great to exceptional. That journey embarks on a new frontier with the arrival of Quest for Craft: Season One: a disquisitive new digital series exploring the convergence of craft and creativity, hosted by bestselling author, cultural icon and scholar of creativity Questlove.
Quest for Craft explores modern creativity between the lines through compelling creators that pour their hearts into what they do. The series, filmed in the iconic Electric Lady Studios, centers around four of the most creative minds, SNL comedian Michael Che, legendary GRAMMY Award winning music producer Jimmy Jam, punk-rock icon Patti Smith, and prolific author Malcolm Gladwell, as Questlove opens conversational passageways to their creative processes, inspirations and aspirations over four compelling episodes. Each chapter also includes films, animations and other cinematic rabbit holes undertaken in search of answers that illuminate the journey of ultimate craftsmanship.

Another great show. I love that concept of once you've mastered something in your field, try something new. If nothing else, it will keep you going! ❤️❤️❤️

Here are my $0.02: most human endeavors are a combination of luck and skill. The proportions vary by discipline -- technical matters (think building a house) are more skill, while artistic matters (at least as far as the economics are concerned) are more luck. The luck part is random -- by birth, god, the universe, etc. But here's the thing: you have to be present when the luck strikes or you will miss it. You have to be well skilled enough when it happens that you recognize it and seize it.

Well then. This made me realize my "seven year work itch" is just me getting bored because I can do my job with my eyes closed! I master my work and it becomes absolutely boring to me. Even went into depression the first time it happened!

I was with Gladwell until he suggested that adulthood was defined by deciding sushi was tasty. First, I think there are cultural issues there, and not liking a type of new food is not a sign of immaturity, even if it is because you aren't used to it.

I am sorry - a six year old can like sushi- ones age is not the bearing-if the parent is eating different things - a child is as knowledgeable as ones parents.
