Mike, you are officially a genius. There I was with my 3 steering pump bolts stuck fast. Ordered a Bahco 8” stilson from Amazon. It arrived yesterday. Went out there this morning, 3 bolts removed. You have my undying gratitude for the little stilson tip 👏🏻👍🍾

Additional tip .. makes it a lot easier access if you remove the waterpump pulley as well. Not a lot of extra work, but a lot easier with it out of the way too. Did my PS pump a year ago

I managed to pick a 1/2" rail of Sikes Pikervant 'drive on flats' sockets (8-32mm) from Halfords many years ago on a clearout sale for £20! . Brilliant as they don't rely on the corners being true as the apply the force a few mm away from the corner on the flats. the only issue with them is if in a tight space when you are needing to use a fine click ratchet, they do move about a fair bit until they bite.

Are you clairvoyant? I have just come indoors from giving up getting those exact three bolts undone! I am in the process of changing my P gasket and front crank seal. All the other pulley bolts came undone easily, but not those ones. I have left them soaking in Plus Gas for now and to give my neighbours a break from all the swearing 😂. The crank seal had the grace to go just as the timing belt was due for a change. I have never done the timing belt before (or the P gasket for that matter) so I imagine the fun can only get better. I don’t possess an impact gun, so your tip about the stilson is nicely timed. If I applied some heat to those bolts, do I run the risk of damaging the pump? It is not as cold over here as where you are, but still not nice to be working outside at this time of year. Anyway very timely top tip from your good self. Keep up the good work

If it helps anyone, the version with a hex key is made by Bosch. It takes a 9mm hex key. The Melling units don’t have the hex hole.

Hi. For just changing the tubes, hoses, cables, whatever GOES from reservoir to the Pump, would i have to remove it all also? Is possible to just replace the tubes, without unmounting the Pump? Regards from Madeira Island, Portugal.

after some advice: I have a 300tdi defender, and my second power steering pump has failed. The shaft comes out of the unit. This is my second power steering pump and barely done over 2000 Miles and have had the same issue. Any advice on what may be causing this ? Thanks

Rebuild in reverse order but with a lot more swearing . I think that was in viz lol
