Preview of our new straw-bed shed for weanlings. It's nearly finished, but I'm not sure whether a straight rail or diagonal bars for the feed barrier would be best.
Quick update here ahead of Sunday's new video which will be a tour of the sheds and the costs involved for the new straw-bed shed.

Thanks for asking this question. It’s amazing how the purpose of the diagonal is not marketed as much. Such a simple question yet not so obvious an answer when doing research.

Thanks Ciaran. I'm doing my best to figure out how it all works. Like the farm itself!

Depends on size of stock. If on the smaller size and a good number in each pen and also feeding meal at the front then straight rail all the way. If larger stock then diagonal stops bullying. Best of luck with the channel.

Less pushing & bullying with diagonals.

Diagonal are a major benefit to stop bullying or stopping pulling of silage in. Because you’re on straw I wouldn’t be concerned about pulling a bit of silage in. You will lose feed space with the diagonals (but only important if feeding meal which I assume you will be!). I have seen a double rail which is adjustable up and down to allow for smaller weanlings when housed at first, but are surprisingly expensive to buy. If you knew a good man on the welder you’d make it for very small money. You can see a double rail if you’re passing Kildalton some day, drop in Kieran.

Thanks Jamie. Hope all is good with you. I’m only looking for an excuse to call to Kildalton so must get organised and call for a look at the feed barriers some day 👍

Diagonal rail they won't waste as much feed.

Diagonal - harder for them to pull in silage into the pen.

That's what I'm thinking. But would you fit more of them at the feed barrier with a straight rail? Say if you were giving them meal on top of the silage?

@@sullivansfarm small cattle (under 275kg) need 2.4m2 - 3m2 per head for a loose shed according to Teagasc so you may well be limited by floorspace before you are limited by feeding space. Would be more of a question for a slatted shed where for that size of animal you can get more headage into the pen - 1.2m2 to 1.5m2 according to Teagasc. Wouldn't say their figures are gospel, but would be 'ballpark'.

Diagonal... you will have less silage pulled in and wasted esp with bales

Diagonal will keep stock in.A better job if not too expensive.
