Me too! I found the degeneration into anarchy and horror profoundly unrealistic, which robbed its commentaries about human nature and society of their impact and left only an unredeemed example of the vulgar. My seventh grade English teacher disagreed, and I got a C because I clearly hadn't recognized the book for the work of genius it was; I'm still bitter about that.

Knowing that John hates The Lord of the Flies makes me feel better about how much I hate it. When I had to do a speech on it in High school I told my English teacher, "I can not describe the deeps of my hatred for this book." I was a weird kid, but I still really hate that book.
@lijohnyoutube101
@lijohnyoutube101 3 жыл бұрын
I love that book, its a reflection on how deeply broken our species really is on a disturbing level. It relates to things like why does police brutality continue and why did concentration camps kill many 100,000’s during WWII. We can not fix our species weaknesses if we can not get real about what they are.

Similar to how I absolutely abhor The Great Gatsby. (fun fact! that's the first book I ever read for school that I had to skim through instead of actually reading, because I hated it so much I had to either skim through or just not read it)
@verity3616
@verity3616 Жыл бұрын
Some people read that book when they are still so young the bullying just comes off as inaccurate rather than allegorical. That happened to me too. I think, re-reading it as an adult, the hunting of the wild boar is a brilliant passage, and goes a long way to explaining how Golding won the Nobel in literature. If you ever get the chance, go back to the novel for an afternoon. Isn't it just a devastating critique of humanity, coming from a man who not only served in WWII, but participated in D-day? I can no longer hate the novel for making me uncomfortable. He had a reason for wanting to do that.

John, why do you revile the _Flies_? My favorite part isn't even in the book. Golding later said about the ending, "The boys are rescued by the crew of a battle-cruiser, and that is very well for them, but who will rescue the crew?" The point being that the adult world is hardly more settled and sensible than the world of a bunch of twelve-year-olds.

John, I am a junior in high school and was assigned a research paper on an American author. After reading both Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars, I instantly fell in love with your writing and I decided to write my paper about your influences for your novels! I related my life to The Fault in Our Stars because of a recent death of my aunt to cancer, my friends defeat of cancer in 5th grade, and a 4-year old family friend of mine who is currently fighting cancer. Thank you for providing such inspiring novels for young adults today. I have been researching your influences for The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and An Abundance of Katherine's but soon realized that most of the online sources are Q&A's from popular sites and news sites. Would it be possible to email you with a few questions for my research paper? I believe that my choice of a current author is very challenging to find correct information on and hope to hear back! Thank you so much for inspiring me!

As bad as it is, I kinda love Hank's expression/reaction on the only non-potato related question. It's like through the whole video of potatoes, that single question stands out as a sorta de-familiarising factor and make the question and situation of it much more realistic and stand out more in its seriousness, in comparison to all the potatoes questions. So kudos on John's planning for this vid?

John's snort at 2:47 tickled me so hard I had to rewatch it so many times. His childlike mischief and wonder at the idea of potato related questions is wonderful. Also I wrote about potato pizza without ever having tasted it! I wrote it as delicious, so I'm glad someone actually thinks that!

the perchlorates in the martian soil are not in high enough concentration for potatos growing it in to die, or to kill you. the way it appears in the martian, one person eating that quantities of potatoes eaten in the movie and book 'the martian', you'd be fine. it's not until you eat way more than that, that it becomes an issue. Film theory (mattpatt) did a video on that, and I'd love to see you double-check his work.

+Jack Traveller Has John previously shared his opinions on Lord of the Flies before - does anyone know? IIRC, I liked the book at the time that I read it, and I'm curious to hear what an actual author has to say about it (I assume CC will be just straightforward typical teaching and non-opinionated).

The Lord of the Flies was literally my favorite book from my entire school career. It hurts me that John hates it so deeply. I guess what we took away from it were very different things. Also, both film adaptations were excellent, especially the original British black and white version.

+shade_grey well i can't speak for John, but i suspect it's similar to why i hate it which is something along the lines of its ...just... inhumanly pessimistic view of humanity. it's a pretty transparent thought experiment, but if its premise were actually true, i have difficulty believing humanity could have survived long enough to even form civilization which the book posits as being the only thing that keeps Man from devolving into a baser animal. it's just such a glaringly obvious logical flaw, and so many people support its bleak, categorically false viewpoint.

+MichiruEll I think he mentioned it in a passing comment on Hankgames once. He said something like that he didn't agree with the narrative that humans during times of crisis tend to savagery rather than reason and kindness.
@shade9592
@shade9592 8 жыл бұрын
Julius Dictator Perpetuus I don't get that. The boys on the island weren't in crisis, they had plenty of food sources. The book doesn't suggest that crisis makes people savages, it's the isolation that does.
@juliusdictatorperpetuus2147

+shade_grey Spoiler warning: I think you're right with isolation, but they were also in crisis. They were on an island and needed to escape using smoke. I don't think John mentioned the book concerning isolation, anyway.
