The only time I didn't experience the sound of an affordable DAC (< $500) as "brittle" or fatiguing was when using a NOS DAC. This then came for the price of great loss of detail.

Excellent and extremely informative, as usual...thank you Hans! What of any r2r variants? I’m still deciding on an upgrade. Denafrips Ares has a NOS and OS mode switch, interested in those comparisons as well 🙏🏼

I recently started sampling some DSF files from the internet and there is a dramatic difference between them and FLAC files. Even 24bit/192khz doesn't have the same quality to it. I didn't expect the difference to be as dramatic as it is.

It's primarily not the quality of the audio files but rather the properties of your equipment that make the difference.

Thank you Hans. Please help the audio world by explaining your thoughts on Amazon Music HD. The controversy is over Amazon Music HD is upsampling which many are complaining about.

Researching streaming services is a pain in the butt. They all use differently mastered versions of tracks so comparing them one to one doesn't prove anything. So the only thing you can do is compare a given album and find out what sounds the best to you and then go to the next album. Sad but true.

Is jitter from audio USB from PC to DAC still a concern? I was under the impression that modern USB audio 2 and asynchronicity means jitter is either barely or not perceptible even for high data transfer rates.

Hello. USB from a normal computer is garbage. I upgraded from a PC USB signal with a W4S USB Reclocker (wich helps cleaning the signal) to the SOtM SMS-200 Ultra Neo (alone) and the difference is BIG. Your DAC will sound much better with a good USB signal and more with a good USB converter (like the Audio-gd DI-20) between the source and the DAC.

The audio sellers wallet will sound much better if you spend a lot of money in such stuff... A lot of theory to justify buys.

@@sebsoud I think you are right, and originally the point of me studying audio is to understand and save money on it in the first place. Other than equipment, the studio doing the recording and it's best practices seems to the most important limiting factor, and I as a consumer have no control or knowledge of it.
