in high school, history was all the battles. I once asked, "what did they ear for breakfast?" and the teacher got annoyed and said that wasn't important!!

Wha?! Boy what a let down. It is important. If there was ever a history teacher that would bring in a dish from then and maybe set up a little corner of the room that looked historical or even demonstrate their mannerisms man....that would have been an awesome class to be in...but alas...their aren't many if any.

Been a near life-long American history buff. Having grown up in a c. 1754 center chimney cape that was originally a tavern on the coast of Maine. Our little town was the center of 19th c. shipbuilding, as well. You all are a delight & we enjoy watching very much. Thank you...

Great video. Ron - I portray a 18th Century wood worker. I started woodworking using modern tools, then collected 1920s-40 tools, now have added 18th/19th century tools. The biggest difference is time and precision. Justine- love the cooking episodes! Our site is south of St. Augustine, and revolves around a road built in 1768. Btw, Jon Townsend in real life is pretty much how you see him in his videos.

Thank you for this video…. Well said, “Civility, chivalry …. Care in how you dress, Care in how you treat other people, Care with what you do with your hands … “. Precious thoughts … sadly we have lost much of that way of living. I value this way of thinking. I hope to pass it on to my granddaughter …. Thank you for making these wonderful videos. Great to get to know a little more about you. I love the spontaneity - no script! Jon Townsend is great! I bought a couple of trivets from him a few years ago. I use them a lot. I’d love to have a cooking hearth. So, are you all from St. Genevieve? You are just wonderful, warm and wholesome folks. Thank you for mentioning all the historic places that are great to visit.

Hi Justine, Candy and Ron! I discovered your Early American channel about six months ago and I enjoy it. Ron mentioned that he is a huge Townsends fan and I too enjoy that channel although eight months ago I discovered "The Woodland Escape" on KZfaq and I love it. Peter Kelly is the KZfaqr presenting his weekly videos each Sunday and his area of interest is the 1750s. Peter is located in eastern Ontario, Canada. Justine will like the fact that he owns a large chunk of land and he recently completed a 1750s frontier log cabin on his land where most of his currently 50 videos are placed at. I have been a lifelong native around Albany in Upstate New York and our local history began nearly 400 years ago with the Dutch as being the first Europeans to settle and trade with the Native Americans. As such my area of historical interest is between the arrival of the Dutch up through the 1790s. I do also enjoy the 1820s to 1840s depicted by Old Sturbridge Village along with the crafts of the Shakers.

This was delightful. I have longed to be in reenactment, but life did not allow to produce, but my period of time is from 1600-1800, Tales from the Green Valley, Jon Townsend are the two channels I came upon years ago, they have given me much insight, joy, ideas and encouragment, in the years since, I include as much as I am able to my everyday life of period ways, food, clothing, etc. I was told long ago, doing a little is better than doing nothing, just enjoy what you can do. I like what Ruth Goodman said of modern life several years ago in an interview, "I hate the perfume-deodorant-wahsing powder smells that sit on the back of your throat. You don't notice them when they're around you all the time, but if you go away from it and come back, modern life stinks." I have to concer. Thanks for sharing, it is always a joy. In Joy

The question about scripts and scene prep was one question I had, too. You all seem to be very comfortable with each other and nothing sounds rehearsed. The very first “Early American” video I watched was Ron brings Justine vegetables for cooking the dinner. Both had this “sparkle” around each other. Both of you were so cute the way you looked at each other and your conversations. I kept thinking “Are they “acting” because it didn’t look like it. Throughout the video I thought I hope they’re together because they make such a cute couple. I was thrilled when I learned, yes, you are together and no, you’re not acting. I love your channel so much! Please make more question and answer videos. One question I have is, are you married and do you have children together? I would think being “in character” AND with kids involved, it would be really hard to control, not to mention a lot of “what if’s” happen. You do a wonderful job and I love that you love each other and you actually still like each other after a day of filming.

You all inspire me. I was doing living history at age 17 at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Civil War Reenactments. Since, I have not had the opportunity. Now I'm a senior citizen and have been thinking about "rigging out" in Colonial attire. I love Colonial and US Revolutionary War Periods. I too grew up living with antiques. I collect Colonial pieces. I swear there are times when I walk into a room filled with period furniture and it's almost like a flash back, a memory. There is even a smell of old wood...Sounds crazy, I know. Now, I live on an Indian Reservation in NC. Many of my Indiginous friends do reenactments and educational programs. Any George Washington fan would like the Made-for-tv movie, "The Crossing" starring Jeff Daniels as Washington and he was superb in the role. It is, of course, about the crossing of the Delaware on Christmas Eve. Well done and historically accurate. It is focused on the battle more than popular culture but a wonderful insight to the man, Washington.

I am so happy to have discovered your show! As a tremendous history buff I garner so much information from your programs. In your discussion you all hit the nail on the head regarding the need to return to civility in discourse, the need for skilled trades, care and self respect in dress and most importantly the need to educate our youth about the American Revolutionary Founding of our country and the founders themselves who were men of integrity who put their fortunes and very lives on the line to establish our country. A dear and close educator friend of mine will be putting on a Patriot Camp here in Wyoming this summer. It was scheduled for the summer before last but unfortunately Covid changed those plans. The goal of this week long camp is to educate the youth in our community about the founding of our nation, the Founders and the foundational documents, and life in the colonial times. Several of us are helping in this endeavor. Some of the potential activities included cooking period dishes so I enjoy your cooking segments very much. Thank you for bringing to life and preserving our past when so many today are trying to destroy our past.

Wow, Justine, we must be sisters because everything you said hit the nail on the head for me! I've loved history ALL my life, even when I was a small child (my Mother was born in France so I also love everything French country - was in France twice in 10 years visiting all the sites), but Early American is where it's at for me too. I can connect to everything you are saying. Great Q & A, loved the questions and answers, have loved all your content so far, and I'm especially looking forward to new videos. Great job Justine, Ron and Kandye!!!

I completely agree with you about dressing! The pandemic has caused people to look like slobs - even school uniforms at some schools around here are now gym shirts and sweat pants rather than a polo shirt or button down and skirt or pants. They claim that it’s the “pandemic uniform,” but I think the slob uniform is going to stay when things are normal again! And address: what’s with kids addressing adults by their first names? I was once introduced to a friend’s child as “Cynthia” rather than Mrs. Mintz, Ms. Cheng Mintz or even Ms. Cynthia or Auntie Cynthia (this isn’t uncommon in my family’s culture and it isn’t just your best friend’s kids. Mr./Mrs. is typically just for teachers or strangers).

Tales From The Green Valley is a wonderful British docuseries that takes 5 historical archeologists to an abandoned 17th century farm that is being restored. They live as a family and run the farm for a full year wearing period clothes, using period tools, etc. Each episode is about a half hour and covers a month. It is wonderful and well worth watching.

Hi, what a fun video, I really enjoyed it. Townsends is so fun to watch also, my favorite is the one where they made the chimney for the log cabin (according to George Washington's specs). Also, talking about the German restaurants, we were in Kauserslauten (sp) and ate at a restaurant every night because they made spaghetti, the only thing my picky eater son would eat. It had a big rooster on the sign and the food was so good. We ate in Belgium once where the doors were open and a cat was strolling about inside, greeting all the guests, so cool. You guys take care and am looking forward to the next video.

I'm a recent subscriber and resides in St. Louis. Been enjoying your channel, I am not always for commenting I am more of the person who likes to sit back and Like and listen to a video. But I have seen most of the recent videos, and wanted to see if you had a Q&A and well here it is! As I was listening I heard Candy mentioned about Schneithorst a German Restaurant and Bar. Sadly it is now closed for good. I enjoyed going there while it was opened (its across the street from where I work, and down the street from where I live), the restaurant was some German Fare styled food, with a Bavarian styled building. Thought I would pass that info on! Anyways, thank you for all the videos you have put out, cool to find others on YT with a passion for history, cooking and more! Best wishes, keep up the great work with the videos, it was great getting to know you all a bit better! Hope to see another Q&A in the future!
