Driving my Audi Q5 55e PHEV for the past 18 months and getting close to 60 MPG overall. Drove 900 miles to FL and then 900 miles back a couple weeks ago and got 32 MPG for the trip. It was nice stopping only twice for fuel as to opposed to when I did the trip in my Mach-E and spent almost 3 hours charging each way. Even with the federal rebate I am expecting the depreciation to exceed what I am saving in fuel. Will be going back to ICE for my next vehicle.

My wife and I just got an Ioniq 5 and love it! I am sure this view would like it a lot also! We got a 2023 SEL AWD with 3400 miles for $36,900 in Minneapolis. BTW shout out to GS Motors!

One thing to keep in mind about PHEVs is that they still get many EV rebates. In Canada most of them get 5K off, and in some places like in NB the provincial government throws in another 5K. 10K off really skews the market because in things like the Hyundai Tuscon the PHEV works out to sometimes cheaper than the hybrid. Assuming you can charge it that makes the PHEV the very obvious choice.

Problem with having no inventory is that you miss out on the impulse buyers, or even ones that are enamoured with the experience. Having some inventory would be ideal for both buyers and dealers, just limited inventory s best for dealers.

Thank you so much for answering my last question with all possible typos. Apologies, I meant that GLE has the best 2nd row room and I am not able to consider others as well because of that. So I wanted your inputs. Thanks I will explore and compare those suggestions. We are not tall people (5'11") but my wife and kids would love the additional leg room on long drives.

For the long run go V6 or V8. These early Turbo motors are having issues (Tundra!!!). Agree with Motormouth that I would avoid a turbo if you are going to be stressing the motor with towing or other heavy work loads.

Both the GLE and the X5 are spacious. So, the issue in the second row is not a lack of legroom but a lack of height in the bench itself. I am not comfortable in the second row of either vehicle.

Been looking at the new Mazda CX-70 PHEV…but the sticker price is 6,000$ more than the standard 6…the window sticker estimated annual fuel costs I’d 500km less that the 6…given the Fed rebate of 2500$; it would be seven years to break even….makes no sense to me…

It really depends on your daily commute and lifestyle. We got a PHEV CX-90 and we save around $6.00 per charge compared to gas. After 9 months of ownership, we've saved around $1100 in gas and that's not including any free charging away from home.

Did some research and found good reports on the 2.7L eco-boost. Bought the 2023 F-150 with it and it gets amazing gas mileage. My average is 31 MPG (or about 26 MP US gallons). When I tow 6-7,000 lbs I find it has lots of power and still gets about the same mileage as the V8 did when it was towing (maybe half what I get when driving empty).

Warranty is 8-10 years or 160,000 kms. After that, battery replacement costs are lower (Tesla from what I gather $15K reburbished to $25K new). Hyundai quoting $50K was robbery.

one problem with car dealerships not having inventory is that when a customer needs a car right away or within say a month then that sale will not happen if the vehicle is not available in a short time frame. I had a car accident last year where my car was totalled and the car I wanted to replace it was a 2023 Toyota Rav4 hybrid any model even the top of the line one and I was told at the time that it would be an 10-12 month wait for a new model. I could however purchase a used 2022 model for 10,000 over list price of a 2023 model.I could not wait more than a month for a replacement vehicle and I did not want a used vehicle even at market price. I checked out honda and ended up with a 2023 touring honda hybrid which was available right away and I have been super happy with the purchase. Toyota lost out on a sale and Honda gained one. There will always be people that need a vehicle right away and if car companies do not have any available for sale right away then they may lose a sale to a company that has vehicles available. Also at the time I expressed an interest in the Rav4 Phev and was told there was a four year waiting list for one which is crazy.

Chevrolets current wait time to order is 10 to 12 weeks, basically 3 months. I’m looking to purchase the new Traverse in the coming weeks. I have been searching inventory for the model, color and packages we want. I only know because I checked into ordering one. Speaking of the new 2.7 GM motor, the 2.5 in Traverse is a modified 2.7 apparently. At least that’s what Alex (autos) said in his review.

Lee Iacoa said “we were building crap.” To avoid spending money, they used tooling well beyond its useful life. As a result, the cars had a lot of leaks. That is a danger of buying near the end of its cycle. I bought an Acura TSX near the end. The car was perfect mechanically but none of the latest features.

wait times for orders were 8-12 weeks for BMW and Audi dealer said no to factory orders period. So essentially you have month waits for allocated inventory and no deals or reasonable lease terms. Tried to get rav4 and it was priced essentally the same as lexus nx. Sadly lexus finance wanted 9% so another month looking.

I put a deposit on a Hyundai Tuscon PHEV a year and a half ago. Never heard from the delearship so I went in to ask and was told they were only getting 2 units for 2024 so I wouldn’t see it until 2025. Got my deposit back now. What a scam! Think of how much money they have and are not telling people when they are getting their cars 😡 I found a very nice 2021 Subaru Outback which I love.

I feel like for how expensive the Lexus TX is, it is missing to many features to justify its price. I get it’s a smaller car, but for money of the type S, you get Air Suspension, massaging seats, and that V6. You can’t even get a V6 and a sunroof together in the TX.

The question of value of a PHEV is really solely dependant on circumstance. I have 13K Km on my 23 Santa Fe PHEV and am averaging 2.3l/100km right now. This will only improve in the summer months. We don't drive long distances and live in a metropolitan suburb so everything is relatively close to us. The payback period for me between the gas model and the PHEV is down to 2.1 years total which is a steal IMO. Additionally I spend no more than $57 in electricity/mo and that's it I go empty to full every day which isn't the case. So my advice, do your homework before seeing if a PHEV is worth the payback period required

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and all the dealerships are jammed packed with new vehicles. A Volkswagen dealership by me has 101 jettas in stock… atlases, and everything else. Same with most brand. Not sure why!

I just wanted to point out that you still want to have the replacement cost insurance on leased vehicle. And that it can actually work out in your favor as the lessee. My BMW 4 series was totaled in an accident. The insurance company cut a check for the replacement cost for a new BMW. The payment to BMW Financial was in the amount of the remaining lease payments plus the residual value of the 4 series which was stated in the lease. The replacement cost was a new 4 series was $4,000 greater than the amount owed to BMW Financial so the insurance company paid me the $4,000.

Many brands use similar anti corrosion methods. Often the difference is the owners. In the Spring I rinse my cars and trucks thoroughly in the spring, for like 90 mins, most of which takes place in areas under the vehicle. Wheels off, clean sub frames and any collection point for dirt and salt. I run water into every crack and crevice to rid my ride of road sand and salt. I let it dry for a day then hit it with Krown. Then I use Krown again in the fall. I let the Krown dealer drill my new car then after the initial application I take over all further applications of their products. You can buy Krown rust inhibitor and apply it yourself at home. I apply it spring and fall. My F150 frame, body mounts and fenders look almost perfect after 11 years. My Camry looks weeks old instead of the 5 years old that it is. Also have a look at Pan the organizer for tips on paint protection. That man is even more nuts than I am. I use turtle wax products like their clay mitt and hybrid solutions wash and then a spray on graphene paint sealer. It takes about 8 hours per vehicle in the spring from start to finish. Yes it's excessive but the results speak for themselves when I sell my cars. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Zack was really miffed about the rear seat legroom complaint. I get it. Cars have been getting bigger and bigger for years, so if rear seat legroom is cramped to you and its anything bigger than a compact, you're either taller than usual or have unreasonable expectations.

Reality check. How many days a year do you drive with someone over 6' tall in the back seat. I'll speculate that for the majority of fans here it is less than 30. And often less than an hour in the rear for each of those times. Yeah we want leg & head room. But all those do-dads we want & NHV reduction takes up space!

I am coming accross a lot of dealers that are not even wanting to negotiate on pricing. They say they are giving you the best price up front. I’m so frustrated. I live here in central Florida and it’s just a nightmare. Seems like dealers just catching attitude. Interesting since sales are going down.

I own a 2023 Rav4 Prime and get about 85-90kms in the warmer weather and about 60kms in the winter. It takes about 2.2 hours and uses 18kwh to fully charge it with my level 2 charger in my garage and it costs about $3 here in NS. Today being a nice sunny day my solar panels produced about 90kwh so I have enough to charge the car battery, power my home and still banked about 50kwh for a later date. I rarely buy gas and have no range anxiety with the Ice and it gets great mileage (5.9L /100km) in hybrid mode. It’s like having a gas station in my garage and was worth the almost 2 year wait. I received an $8000 rebate on the Prime and $6000 on my solar panels so that helped a lot. In January I put a deposit down on a 2026 Rav4 Prime that is supposed to be a 6th generation and am being told the resale value on mine is really high so it won’t cost much to upgrade.

Would have bought a RAV4 Prime ourselves four years ago, but I'm too cheap. Instead, got a used, loaded i3 REx (now at 106k miles with zero issues). As you said, the safety net of the onboard ICE is amazing. We bought 25 gallons of petrol last year to cover 24,000 miles of worry-free driving. Will likely go RAV Prime when it's time to replace it.

Yeah we’re very happy with our Rav4 Prime, it’s probably the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and feel like we have the best of both worlds with the Ice and EV and I’m almost 70. If you want one you should put a deposit down now because it could take a while to get one.

It depends on how seriously you feel about not contributing to CO2 emissions. PHEV can be daily driven on an average daily cycle (for the "average" driver) without burning any fuel. Having a Level 2 charging availability and, best case, a garage to do that charging in make the transition that much more practical. A regular hybrid might be a right choice for apartment dwellers. The biggest tripping point is the dear prices that PHEV cost to get into one.

When I ordered my 23 Silverado the pandemic was kind of winding down but my local dealer didn't have a diesel to test drive so ordered based on reviews that I had read. I placed the order July 23, the order was picked up in late Sep and the truck was built in Fort Wayne the first week in November. Then the truck sat in Fort Wayne for close to 3 months. It was also selected for quality testing as it arrived with over 100 kms on it. Maybe a good thing as it has been problem free. As for the 2.7 the dealer gave me one to run errands while my winter tires were being swapped. I didn't like it at all and made me appreciate my Duramax. One last thing my diesel consistently gets better fuel economy than what is rated by Transport Canada. Great show as always.

With global auto OEM's treating Canada like a doormat, you guys do a segment on "how to buy a car from a US dealer and import it to Canada" with pros and cons. In the US, selection and pricing is a car buyers market, Canada not so much.

A good buddy of mine is in the market for a larger car to fit a growing family with kids + sports/camping gear. If you NEED a COMFORTABLE third row, even for adults, with cargo room while the third row is up, the TX is the way to go. Even GX and LX with the third row up only has a I'd say ~2ft of trunk space. If you want a third row for emergencies, and not road trips, the MDX does fine. But c'mon Turbo V6, I wouldn't expect fuel efficiency to be a #1 priority...hybrid or PHEV if you want efficiency in a big three-row SUV.

MDX vs TX….I drove my 2016 MDX 280,000 miles trouble free. Now my daughter drives it. I replaced it with a grand highlander hybrid max platinum. I’m not disappointed. More Toyotas are in my future.

We have a 2017 CR-V, bought used in 2022. Had a 2008 Chrysler 300, gifted it to my father-in-law, took it back in 2024 when he passed away. We were the 2nd & 4th owner and only 127k Km on it now. We take delivery of a 2001 MX-5 GT 6 speed manual with 111,500 km on it this week & it will be our “fun car” . Can hardly wait! Still loving your shows each week! All the best from SW Ontario.

I dont think i will ever buy phev. It makes sense for some cases where you get large govt incentives (quebec, bc) and you have commute for ev range but i think it might have reliability issue. (ev+gas engine sounds like more thing to break down the road). I rather go for hybrid or full BEV..

A reasonable timeline for ordering a vehicle. For sure my wife and i pulled the the trigger our 2024 GMC acadia denali because it was on the lot (drove 3 hours away to get it )and everything else we looked at was 6-18 months wait, no thanks. We needed something right away and waiting that long is just unacceptable. If the manufacturers are going to play these games i am taking my money else where. So lesson is if they want to play games don't play their games just go elsewhere

so here's the thing with battery replacement. most of the manufacturers can't diagnose damage so they replace the entire battery with a new battery which is why it's so expensive. Tesla can replace cells so Tesla is cheaper. HOWEVER, you are paying a new battery fee but you aren't getting a new battery. what they do is they replace the bad cells with equivalent age good cells that were scavenged from wrecks. So you're getting a not new battery but you're paying a new battery price. So there have been people that paid for a new battery, only to have to replace it relatively quickly.

What roadside assistance is available to electric vehicles that have run out of charge? A tank of gas can be brought to a non electric vehicle. Is there a portable charge carrier that a roadside provider can bring?

Consider, my PHEV engine, transmission, and related components will have about 30,000 miles wear when the odometer says 100,000. And when my 41 mile battery finally needs replacement it won’t total the car like a large EV battery. I use a normal household outlet to charge it, I’ll never need a charging station. Signed, hopelessly addicted to logic.

You still have the ICE weight and service/maintenance costs. Tesla required maintenance is tire rotation and cabin air filter. I've never been to the service centre in 5 years. Just a couple of mobile service visits.

@@approots No public charger, assume you don’t travel very far (?) While I don’t need to, I buy gas once a month to reconcile my cost to propel with the monthly electric bill. I drive about 900 miles a month, I buy an average of 8.6 gallons a month. Cost to propel averages 7.9¢ per mile w/ electric at 16.5¢ per kWh.

Even with my full EV, I use level 1 charging at home and don't charge past 70%. A lot of people who actually charge their PHEV will probably be convinced to go full EV when they see the reality of home charging and their actual average mileage (it's much less than they imagine).

2.5 years ofPHEV experience, 41 mile battery, 110V charging g overnight. 103 mpg, about $35/mo to charge. Last 4 cyl ICE GOT 29.7 lifetime. The car has 455hp and 523 lb-ft. I’ll never need a charging station (or an EV). I’m pleased.

@@billurban1581 I almost got the Sportage PHEV before I test drove my ID.4. I'm relieved I went full EV. I never have to go to a gas station to huff fumes, and don't have to worry about servicing a drive train I never use (no oil changes, transmission fluid concerns, etc). No burning gas on the highway and instant torque all the time. Great for passing.

I worry about the fate of EV incentives, charging stations, power grid overload, etc., when the pie-in-the-sky liberal politicians get voted out, much as is happening in Europe now. (Many are ignorant of the $35 trillion AND COUNTING in US debt that will come due.) What then? When the demand increases 500% how much will electricity cost? And might it be rationed? The left already is saying buy EVs and btw limit your AC use. Huh? Electricity? Public utilities . . . Gas? Free market, relatively. A PHEV gives you “choice,” two ways to propel, kinda like insurance. At my rate of gas use I could gas up every seven weeks (hardly a chore) but I’m not a fan of letting the tank get low. And my “gassing up” takes five min at any one of the scores of stations I pass every month (even on a longer trip). A regular household outlet charges my battery every night, I will never need a charging station. Torque? When I need it there’s 523 lb ft available in my car. The Volkswagen that’s priced comparable to my AWD Volvo is the ID.4 Pro S Plus AWD. It has, according to CAR AND DRIVER, 335 HP, my Volvo has 36% more power. Buy an EV battery vehicle and you have avoided 319 g of greenhouse gases per mile that would have come from an ICE tailpipe. Build and sell six or eightPHEV‘s with the same amount of rare earth elements and you have avoided perhaps 1500 g per mile that would’ve come from six or eight ICE tailpipes. Wow. It’s great we’re both happy with our choices and neither of us can claim to be happier than the other, but the PHEV nay-sayers claim superiority they don’t have, in my view. Good to chat.

The incentive in Australia is that the dealer has to have the car complied and delivered that month to the customer. Not take orders. Fleet and company cars are sold to make numbers for the dealership to purchase cars from the manufacturer at a cheaper price so they have a better margin when selling.

Economics 101. Supply vs demand. Low dealership inventories means dealers can easily gouge customers. If you want a specific brand, you have no where to else to go. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Some will try this strategy but the manufacturer that appears to be fair to its customers and has a reasonable amount of inventory will prevail. Gouge me once and I'm gone for life.

There is incorrect information . The RAV4 prime starts at 51150 and not 54000 as mentioned. The PHEV depending on where you live will you might qualify for provincial credits and the 5000 dollars federal credit which substantially brings down the cost.

When I mentioned your KZfaq profiling, the exorbitant co$t, $60.00 + battery replacement. He didn't believe me (?), so I suggested he checked you out. Myself, I don't see you not verifying the information you put out on this show....

PHEV is at an awkward spot. If your daily drive is less than the EV range of a PHEV, the vehicle is fuel efficient but the distance is too short for you to make up the extra cost during your ownership. Makes more financial sense to get the cheaper gas version for just 40-50km a day driving . If your daily drive is regularly more than the EV range of a PHEV, then you shouldn’t get a PHEV. Get a regular hybrid or EV to save money, or keep driving gas cars. Anything is logically better than PHEV.

Based on our annual mileage and driving, the PHEV would save us about $1,000 a year, the premium for RAV4 PHEV, makes the pay off more than 8 years. Not worth it for us.

Your logic depends on circumstances. On a regular 175 mile round trip my 455HP AWD PHEV (41 mile battery) burns about 3.2 gallons. If the route is in navigation the battery is apportioned over the entire drive, wherever advantageous. Around town the engine rarely starts. Logic is in the eye of the beholder.

⁠@@foxlake6750It will likely take longer than whatever you calculated. As there are additional parts to maintain and repair/replace. Also EPA for Electric range is not very accurate, the efficiency is dependent on many things: temperature, wind, uphill/downhill, etc.

@@billurban1581different PHEVs have different modes. some drives like a pure EV and became a inefficient HEV when the EV range is gone, some can drive like a regular HEV from start if you choose to, but at that point why wouldn’t you just get a regular HEV if you tend to use that mode more often. Basically all user scenario of a PHEV can be covered by an EV, HEV or ICE vehicle. Most cases one of the 3 choices is financially better than PHEV.

AND FROM THE OWNER'S MANUAL: "If a destination has been selected in Maps, the vehicle will calculate the most energy-efficient way to distribute the electrical current throughout the trip. The calculation takes into account factors such as speed limits, traffic and altitude differences."

Type S? Great enthusiast advice but bad consumer advice. The Type S costs $20k more than the aspec model for only 65 more horsepower and the turbo engine isn't proven for reliability yet. Yes you get other features but incredibly costly to repair air suspension, Brembo brakes, massage seats, etc. Stick with regular MDX.
