After 8 years of school and 1 year of residency, I finally accomplished my goal of becoming a clinical inpatient pharmacist! I'll be recording my pharmacy journey - navigating life as a first time pharmacist fresh out of my pharmacy residency.
This video is to answer all the questions submitted about pharmacy. Sorry, I was not able to answer them all - but I will make sure to do another video in the future to answer more!

The fact that you mentioned the strategy to remember the bulky information is to teach someone and repetition. I love that thank so much.

My go-to resources I use at work is UptoDate & micromedex! GlobalRPH is a good website to check how to compound certain IV medications. There’s also a lot of good pharmacist blogs that go over hospital topics! Some that I can recall are pharmacyjoe.com and emcrit.org

hi thanks for the great video. is it true that its hard to get hospital pharmacy jobs in us and it doesnt have good jobe scope? isnt physical therapy a better degree?

I’d say yes, it’s becoming increasingly more competitive in terms of hospital pharmacy jobs! But no, I work in california and we have a lot of scope. As a clinical pharmacist, I am able to prescribe and titrate a variety of medications under my scope of practice! We have a lot of autonomy in pharmacy in the west coast. I am not sure how it is for other parts of the United States!

Hello! Can I work at hospital as a simple pharmacist whitout a master degree?
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! hospital pharmacist positions require a pharmD degree, meaning you’ll need to complete a 3-4 year doctorate of pharmacy program! +/- an extra year of residency training to be competitive for the position!

How long does a letter of recommendation lasts? What if you are unable to go straight into residency?
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD 2 жыл бұрын
I am not quite sure ☹️ However, residency match is broken into 2 phases. If you don’t match during phase I, there is something called phase II in which programs and students who did not match get a second chance!
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you don’t match during both phases, you will have to reapply the following year with new LORs. Double check me if I am wrong!

I hope job demands won't turn non-existent when I graduate. 😬
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’ll ever become NON-existent since older pharmacists gotta retire eventually right 😉 you can also always work per-diem at a hospital until a full time position opens. Or work full time at a large chain hospital (kaiser, VA) but in a non-ideal location for a short time until you can transfer to a more ideal location when a position opens!

@@SarahPharmDhi, i was admitted to USC in CA and Creighton in AZ. Creighton is a lot cheaper and near my home so do you think USC worth a move to CA? Should I stick with a cheapest school or choose higher-ranked school like USC regardless high tuition of USC?
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD Жыл бұрын
@@phuotnuocmychannel3021 where do you ultimately want to work? Do you want a job in CA or in your hometown? If you want a job at your hometown, I say definitely pick Creighton! In addition to cheaper tuition, the most important reason in my opinion is networking. Most of your 4th year rotations will be local in the area of your school. This gives you the opportunity to network and potentially get hired on if you do well at those sites. Pharmacy is a small world so even if you don’t get hired on at your rotation sites, jobs you apply for - the pharmacists there will probably know someone that works at your rotations and ask how you did on your rotation. USC is a great school and I picked it because I ultimately wanted a job in my hometown. USC has a lot of connections in terms of internships and rotations in Southern California - so if you want to live in California, I say pick USC.

@@SarahPharmD thank you so much for your valuable insight! I really want to live in California because of better weather than AZ my hometown. But I am torn between AZ and CA because as you know, it’s saturated in big cities in CA where weather is perfect. I also believe USC have stronger network than Creighton which can help me land a good position in CA. What do you think if I study pharmacy in AZ then apply for jobs in CA in order to save money and live close to my family during 4 years of schooling? Is it doable that out-of-state candidate is hired in CA? I know I need to study pharmacy law in CA after graduation to pass law test to get licensed to work in CA.
@SarahPharmD
@SarahPharmD Жыл бұрын
@@phuotnuocmychannel3021 if you want to ultimately live/work in CA, it would be more difficult to network and secure a job from Creighton after you graduate :/ the CA pharmacy law exam CPJE is actually a more difficult law exam compared to the MJPE that other states use. A lot of pharmacists from out of state have to take it multiple times because the pharmacy schools in other states don’t prepare you enough on how to take it because it is so difficult/different. you will also be competing against pharmacy students that have internships and networks already established in the area if you apply from out of state. Because a lot of people stand out on paper, a good word of mouth recommendation from a pharmacist that knows you can go a long way.
