Moscow, 31 of January, 1990. Less than 3 months for the Berlin Wall to crumble, a huge queue formed around the Pushkinskaya square in the heart of the Soviet Union. Under the winter sky, over 5000 Soviets covered from head to toe waited in line for over eight hours, their objective, clench their teeth on a juicy McDonald sandwich. What a difficult times for communism.. Finally Communism would know the Big Mac .

Soviets? No, Russians. Soviet was the regime, but Russians were always Russians, from Rus and Novgorod, to now and forever Communism was never a legitimate government of Russia anyway, they took over power with a coup d'etat after murdering Tzar Nicholas and his family and the mass persecutions of Russians

8 hours waiting in queue is a lot. It was the same story here in Ireland, when Krispy Kreme first came to our country. People here waited many long hours for the first store to open its door. As for the people, I can understand what they felt while lining up for hours. It was not just a fast food restaurant, it was a new concept, something they heard about but were sure they will never see in their lives, a part of another world. Like aliens. Since discovering Mu Mu, I have not been back to McDonalds in Moscow!

I find this video just so fascinating. Mostly because McDonalds, in my experience, is overpriced, unremarkable and unsatisfying. Yeah. Overpriced. A McDonalds meal sets you back a full day's work at minimum wage in Brazil. Per person. Mostly because of taxes. Really. You see only middle class people eating that shit over here. It's somewhere you go to commemorate something. People dress all social and shit. A stark contrast to the US, where McD means cheap, fast food you eat when you have no time for anything else, to the point it was once cheaper than home cooked food. Or you're living on welfare.
@vovixs.5676 жыл бұрын
I saw this difference in Ukraine during 2000s. In Kyiv it became cheap student or travel food long ago while in regional centers you could still see decent families with children celebrating something. But at that time there were almost no "cheap and safe" alternatives to that network. As for today, when UAH currency fell from 8 to 25 per USD, McDonalds' corporate standards made it not the cheapest food option in Ukraine again, and the niche of "cheap and safe" food began to be filled partly with KFC, partly by individual eateries with prices not jumping everyday (as they mostly use locally-grown produce, not imported), and McDonalds' expansion stuck. It is still expanding though (the 2nd busiest McDonalds in the world near Kyiv central railway terminal is now supplemented with 2 more from the opposite side of rails where the largest KFC in Europe had been opened before) but not so fast. I think its core concept is rather dying.

In Turkey, they were cheapish-to-middle alternatives against local food. The economic shrinkage made McDonalds and Burger King kind of middle-to-slightly expensive food. Their quality dropped a lot, especially BK's, which had a lot better quality when they were a lot cheaper.

Late Soviet history is so fascinating by its outcome, and footage such as this one make you understand why seeing history is very important in understanding why communism fell. If someone knows the name of this superbe song please tell me. I really like this vid mostly because of it. :)

Куча споров в комментах - борьба за идеологию, просто никто ничего лучше идеологии и культуры США не придумал. Мы пытались построить коммунизм - все просрали. И в этом только наша вина, во всех бедах нашей страны.
