Universal Studios Hollywood invites guests to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Studio Tour with a unique experiential program from April 26 through August 11, 2024.
In 1964, Universal City Studios launched a unique adventure, offering tourists a firsthand glimpse into Hollywood moviemaking. Five times daily, Monday through Friday, the iconic red and white Glamor Trams, with their distinctive ruffled awnings, transported eager visitors through the studio backlot, providing a behind-the-scenes look at Universal's movie and television productions.
Over the past 60 years, the Studio Tour has evolved into a world-renowned experience, attracting over 200 million guests globally. As a cornerstone of Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Destinations & Experiences (UDX), the Studio Tour celebrates its heritage by inviting guests to join this milestone event.
The celebration will feature the return of several iconic red and white candy-striped Glamor Trams to commemorate this anniversary. Additionally, guests will have the unique opportunity to step off the tram and onto a legendary movie set featuring a fully restored 1964 vintage Glamor Tram, providing memorable photo opportunities and social media posts, including a giant King Kong backdrop and the theme park’s original hanging Jaws shark.
A highlight of the 60th celebration is the renovated “Earthquake-The Big One” attraction, which first debuted on the Studio Tour in 1989. This simulation of an 8.3 magnitude earthquake has been upgraded with contemporary technology and aesthetics.
Other features include visiting Courthouse Square, where scenes from the Back to the Future movies were filmed, with an original time machine picture car on display. The 1976 Runaway Train will also temporarily return, with warning bells and sirens. The tram's monitors will show nostalgia clips of former Studio Tour attractions.
Guests can also explore a behemoth Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur display used to promote Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World movie. This giant creature, complete with sharp teeth, will be located next to a locked paddock of screeching dinosaurs.
Universal Studios Hollywood is partnering with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Sign Trust for this celebration. Steve Nissen, CEO and President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, expressed excitement about the collaboration, allowing guests to see a perfectly scaled replica of the Hollywood Sign up close. Jeff Zarrinnam, Chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, also shared enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the opportunity for guests to experience the sign in a new way.
In celebration of the Hollywood Sign’s centennial and the Studio Tour’s 60th anniversary, Universal Studios Hollywood is debuting a replica of the Hollywood Sign on the studio backlot. This replica, meticulously crafted from historical records, will stand 10 feet tall and provide unique photo opportunities for guests.
The Studio Tour, a world-class attraction, offers guests an authentic look at movie and television productions. Guests pass state-of-the-art soundstages, outdoor sets, and studio offices. They will also enjoy archival images, videos, and an augmented reality (AR) Studio Tour trivia challenge.
Over six decades, the Studio Tour has remained true to its roots, immersing guests in the magic of moviemaking. While the original two-hour Glamor Trams have been replaced with a 60-minute experience enhanced by advanced technology, the Tour continues to enlighten and entertain millions of visitors worldwide.
Looking to the future, the Studio Tour is converting its fleet of 21 diesel-hydraulic engines to electric trams to reduce carbon emissions and improve the guest experience.
From iconic sets like Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho to the development of innovative rides and attractions, the Studio Tour has been "act one" in the evolution of Universal Destinations & Experiences’ global theme parks portfolio.
