@@TimsVariety i actually hope they change the whole system of guidance on the radar scope. its too clustered. the timer should count down to time to activation/pitbull, and then when it reaches 0 and goes active, the timer changes to time to impact. or maybe a new piece of HUD near the radar that shows those things. because its very hard to get an idea when my missile is self sufficient and im putting myself in danger. going from a dashed line to solid is a bad design choice since the dashed line by definition is solid in some places which makes it hard to tell if its a solid line, or a short section of a dashed line. that and the whole circle around the target makes it very difficult to judge what your missile is doing

The F-14 had a covered ACM Boresight switch that has done that for the AIM-54.

I think maddog is slightly different, its when you fire it with no lock at all and hope that it picks up a target with its own radar

Does this work properly in WT? I noticed mutliple times now that If I hard lock someone (no tws), fire ammram and then instantly de-lock enemy, my missile just flies straight and doesn't pick any target

Just got the amraam, what would you say is the best altitude and distance to launch an amraam at an enemy?

@@FishyTopic depends on the situation and their altitude. In general. You really only want to launch when they are flying towards you. If they are flying around, try to predict when they will end up flying towards you, that will give your missile the best chance of maintaining a lock. Second important thing, you always want to make sure your missile will end up having more energy than is needed to hit the target. This meaning essentially, that by the time it is approaching the target, it is either fast enough to maneuver with the enemy and catch it, or is above the enemy, so that no matter where they go, the missile can lead them, and catch up. Third important thing. Try not to launch at enemy’s surrounded by friendlys, unless you are confident you can hold the lock. Essentially this means there’s two parts of the match that allow you to make effective 25km shots. The beginning of the match, when enemies are the only thing in front of you. And at the end of the match, when everyone’s dead, and there’s less friendlys that might attract your missile. For any 25km shot, you want to lob it. You don’t need to get super high to make the shot work, but I would say a minimum of 3km elevation, and launching while pointing your nose at a 45 degree angle upwards, will result in an amraam that will come down on the target. However, optimal will be about 5km. If you go much higher over 5km you’ll get a vapor trail, and make yourself vulnerable to people that didn’t originally see you on radar. Because now they can see you visually. And of course, the faster you go, the faster the missile will end up going, and the farther it will go. At ALL other times, you want to stay low and defensive during the match. Going up to even 2km can make you an easy target and will get you killed. If people are within 15km of you, they are viable targets, but so are you. At that range, you don’t need to work hard for your missile to reach them. HOWEVER you still want your missile to come DOWN on them whenever possible. This increases the odds of it hitting, and if it misses, it may hit the ground under them, and damage them. A flat trajectory means a miss, an arc means a splash. So let’s say for instance you are on the deck, flying 10km away from an enemy who is also on the deck. What you want to do, is lock them, pull off the deck to get a solid lock, then pop up, again at a 45 degree angle, and launch while in that angle. Then immediately after, pull back down and away to defend. If you stay up and towards them, they can kill you. They will be trying to get you too, so will stay pointed at you, so while you are defending and they are coming at you, your missile is coming down at them to kill them. And if they launch on the deck flat, their missile will be easy to defeat. If an enemy is 15 to 10km away and is off the deck. Too far to drop quickly, then there is no need to pop up. However I like to do it anyway, to give my missile a better chance. And that is mostly all you need to know. There are a lot of variable situations. Like with hills. And if you are high, no need to angle up at enemy’s that are low and close. Just think of the amraam as a spear at all times. There’s an arc to it. And it doesn’t have infinite energy. You have to do specific things to make sure it lands in the right place. Unless you are close, and you can use it more like a sidewinder.

People ask for it now and then, but going over my personal control setup wouldn't be a lot of help as I use an Elgato Streamdeck and a sort of MFD in addition to my KB and stuff.

@TimsVariety ahh makes sense. My hopes went up in flames, just now, since you are the go-to guy for WT guides. I should have assumed something like that was the case since you did not do it before. I do not have the patience nor really the idea to set up my own controls and it is much easier to just copy someone else's who put some thought into it and made it work and made it convenient. Assuming its not an oversight (I haven't looked in datamines or anything before typing this reply), and the Harrier's radar does NOT have a datalink value listed, then I would assume you are generally correct that it could only provide a link to 1 missile at a time (or possibly none, relying entirely on IOG).

Honestly the only way I've found of dodging FOX-3s is by notching and praying. 50/50 wituation, too; it hits or it misses. You should try that

I've had the most luck notching the missile and dropping 1 chaff, wait a few seconds, drop a second chaff, then point your nose up or down a few degrees so the missile is on a different path than you. Basically amounts to turn, chaff, pull. Not hard to do, but when 5 people are closing the gap on you it will leave you slow and facing the wrong way.

Put the radar in track while scan mode, select a target, fire, and use the "Select Radar/IRST target to lock" keybind which is on alt-t by default to select a new target, fire again. Do not lock any targets. stay in track-while-scan the entire time and don't ever go to track.

@@SpartanGIS2 Glad to help! Strongly recommend against locking targets with Fox-3's even if you're only shooting at one guy since the lock tone will give away that you're going to fire. Staying in TWS generally means your target won't turn to the notch.

That counter next to the weapon selection is a pretty good indication. The radar scope will also display the missile's inertial guidance correction indicator until the missile goes live.

Yes, both AIM-54 missiles we have in the game use active radar homing. I showed them both on the chart early in the vid.

Launch them at targets pointed towards you and don't launch below Mach 1.15 and 30,000 ft if you want reliable hits.
