brings back so many many memories....I used to work at a repair work shop repairing radio/cassette players/betamax and VHS players/TVs/car stereos etc... so many years ago. Started when I was only 12 (only as summer job when schools were shot and just going out to buy components for the guy and watch him how he did the repairs) until I was 18 when I was allowed to do some repairs similar to this video or installing stereos on people's cars. During high school it was my full time summer job and also one day per week during the school year (one day out of my weekends) I loved it then and I miss it now

@@zx8401ztv oh yeah absolutely. In that summer when I turned 12 and schools were closed,my late dad told me, I should go to this shop (his old buddy) and learn a skill besides just going to school and reading books! also it was good for my social skills as I had to interact with so many people of all sorts everyday and also make a small amount of money (which grew over the time :-) as a kid it was amazing and I never missed a day until I graduated high school (all summers 6 days a week and one day a week when in school during high school) that determined the path of rest of my life...I was hooked with electronics and when I entered university there was no other option for me except to study electronics and later years in grad school switched to RF/Microwaves...but those repair shop days will remain with me forever. and when I was home from work, it was back to my small poor man's electronic workshop building kits and other projects...I had a Weller soldering iron and a DC power supply (with 3V,4.5V,6V,7.5V,9V,12V output not regulated) since I was 12 and I bought a Sanwa analog multimeter when I turned 13...

That's a nice looking unit. My partner has a probe sort of like that in her bedside drawer. I didn't know what it was until I saw yours, funny as she has no interest in vintage tape players.

What an unusual deck, i could swear it was a cd player untill i saw dolby on the tray face plate. The deck is very fancy as well. I would imagine that belt may have needed changing if it was possible to get one. (Rocking horse poo) lol. I have never seen a deck like that before.

Nice repair,Simon! Great (Boomer) tunes too, Huey Lewis and Cat Stevens. Perhaps you could compare the two transport mechanisms and find where that bit of plastic came from.

Great video! I have a TEAC AH-500 with some strange issues. Problem 1: when playing a music CD and the volume is off (0 dB), you can still hear music slightly through the speakers or headphone. Another music source via Aux or MD gives the same result. Problem 2: when only the amplifier is on without a music source, you hear a slight buzz tone through the speakers or headphones. No humming tone. What is a practical troubleshoot?

I have a suggestion whenever testing cassette decks - always use a an expendable D or CHF or LH never put a precious cassette like a SA-X in and deck that hasn't been thoroughly tested many times with expendable tapes.

the issue with the transport going out of sync on occasion in these decks is usually the belt being loose, even if it doesn't look too loose. Occasionally sticky grease. Shouldn't be difficult to fix.
@SoddingaboutSi
@SoddingaboutSi 3 жыл бұрын
It has a new belt fitted that's tight. But still does it. Think a part has broken off as there was a small piece of black plastic under the transport?

Years ago at a hobby night school, electronics. I was chatting to young kid about tape decks, he said to sandpaper hardened pinch roller rubber. I thought what an idiot, skip 10 yrs and I tried it and fuck me if it didn't work. I was flabbergasted, couldn't believe it saved a lot of time

Hello there. Recently purchased identical Tape Deck, but from time to time (intermittent) it’s eating the tape. After removing the top cover, I realize that the mechanism pressing the tape doesn’t push it all the way down. I look at the springs on the sides, but they seem to be OK. Any advise what to check and how to fix it? Thank you in advance.
@SoddingaboutSi

Possibly a main belt slipping.
@markwawrzyniak109
@markwawrzyniak109 2 жыл бұрын
@@SoddingaboutSi Hi Simon, thank you for the prompt response. I know for a fact that its related to the tape locking/pushing down mechanism. The tape it's not presed all the way down and it doesn't engage with the wheel turning mechanism. When you press it down with your fingers it work ok. Do you think it has something to do with the main belt? Thank you in advance.

@@markwawrzyniak109 Hope you got this sorted but the tape tray has its own belt, you can see that on the left of the deck when Simon manually moves the tray. it could be that on yours it needs replacing.
