@@MrBobWareham Businesses profit from planned obsolescence. They build this into their product offerings so consumers have to replace more frequently. There were some legislative efforts in the European Union to prevent this as it is bad for the environment and a predatory practice against consumers. In short, it is not the Chinese only, but the majority of businesses throughout the world including the good ole US of A, e.g., Whirpool.

My husband tried a damp magic eraser sponge and it took the haze off immediately. Don't bother with all these steps. We did spray the Rustoleum clear gloss UV resistant non-yellowing on the top after, but you really just need to use a magic eraser to get the film off!

Solar panels use all, different frequencies of light to charge. The UV damages the outer coating of the plastic covering of the solar panel and makes it much less efficient.

I watched the video and read the comments. Today, I pulled all the old lights out, took them apart, cleaned them, used Magic Eraser and Simple Green for the tops, did the sandpaper that you recommend, and am changing out the batteries now. I will spray them in the morning! Thanks everyone for the awesome tips to help me waste less!

Another handy thing I learned this year is, these lights come with a 200-300 mAh battery. If you replace them with a 900-1200mAh battery, they'll stay on much, much longer.

Just remember that you can't get anything out you don't put in there in the first place. The bigger the battery capacity, the more it needs to charge up during the day. In California or Florida there may well be enough sunlight during even winter months to charge up the battery, but here in the UK with around 16 hours of darkness in mid winter (worse in Northern Scotland) and lousy weather (grey and overcast) it is highly unlikely you'll charge up a larger battery sufficiently to keep it in reasonable long term condition. Just a word of caution!

@@boblewis5558 We get plenty of sunshine here in Eastern Virginia during the spring, summer and fall, but in winter when the sun shifts to the south, not so much. But when we have several days of "English weather," i know exactly what you mean.

Even clear coat doesn't last long. The best way around it is either find pathway solar lights with glass solar panel surface (which is very hard to do) or install wired pathway lights, the ones you power from 12v transformer plugged into your house's AC outlet outside.

This was very helpful, thank you. I had not thought of taking in my pathway lights over Winter, but now I will probably do so. My area of the country does get quite a bit of of sunlight through at least December, though. Still, it may be a good idea to service them as you do in the video and store them until sometime in March or so once it starts to warm up again. I wish I had seen your video a long time ago. I threw a way a really nice set of lights some years back because I just thought they were no good after one season! Oh, well....c'est la vie.

@Plant Abundance I do it differently with success. I sanded like you did but instead of respraying them I bought something which is called helicopter tape. It can be found very cheap on ebay etc .. They also use this to protect frames on a bike, bumpers etc .. I covered my restored cells which were dull after 1 season in the sun here. I checked and after I believe 3 years (can't even remember when I did this) the cells are still in like new condition. The advantage is that if the tape yellows you can just take it off and stick a new one on. Also you can cut it bigger than the cell and make sure the water doesn't penetrate any openings next to the cell.

Thank You very much for sharing this will all of us. I like to keep two of the lights outside on my Deck all year long, clearing the snow and ice away when possible in the Winter months. Whenever we have a power-outage because of a nasty storm, I bring these into the house for lighting. They're much safer than candles, or oil lamps and you be amazed at how much light and illumination these actually provide. (p.s. the newer LED lights which fit on top of a fence post have zero illumination....they're more for decorative purposes and not for lighting up a pathway or the deck, as I'm certain many people may already know or have discovered so they're no good for emergency lighting purposes.)
