New flute students never seem to want to articulate using truly the tip of the tongue. They tend to tongue with a thicker, less precise spot BEHIND the tip of the tongue.
At the same time, new players don't want to open their jaws to get more vertical space in the oral cavity. HERE IS THE KEY: getting more vertical space in your mouth will greatly aid in tongue placement, as well! If you open your jaw wide - think of having enough space between your top and bottom teeth, in EVERY register, that you can easily insert your thumb through your teeth - your tongue will also be lower in your oral cavity. Then, in order for your tongue to reach up and articulate, it will be much easier to do using truly the tip of your tongue. This is because your entire tongue will now be placed farther away from the roof of your mouth, with more space in your oral cavity.
Using the cavities we have in our heads for resonance (including our oral cavity and others) is critical to achieving a beautiful flute sound! To learn much more about that, watch my Flute Tube Episode 12 video called "Flute Resonance - YOUR HEAD IS FULL OF CAVITIES!!!"
