In this video I show you my process for using a Bar Grounder in my leather tooling designs. We get a lot of questions on using a bar grounder and it can be challenging if you are used to using a matting tool for your background when tooling leather.
Once you learn how to use this tool for your backgrounding I think you will find it easier and faster than a matter.
Please excuse some of the audio in this video... seems like the mallet tapping during the tooling somewhat masked a bit of the audio a bit of me talking.
If you would like to see the beveling video that we did that I reference in this video, then you can find that here:

Got my purse kit, and working on it. Now Im trying to learn tooling. Taking a Tandy class in a couple of weeks. In the mean while, Ive watched several You Tube videos with several other artist. I love your style and instructions best. Far above all others for me. Thanks for your time in making these videos possible for me and others to learn from.

Thanks so much Don for taking the time to share these videos. I'm sure that it's enough work just to actually run your business, so taking the time to share this info with the rest of us is really gracious of you. I've been told that many of the "old-timers" often used to cover up their work when folks came into their shop so that they could protect the tricks-of-the-trade. Thanks for being willing to "uncover" your work in order to help pass along this craft to other aspiring leatherworkers. :)

Amazing Don, you make it look a lot easier. I've been practicing the bargrounder but seem to keep overlapping a little too much in my opinion

As I’m watching you work, I am admiring the nice burnished colour your getting from your tooling. I’m sure it’s a combination of casing the leather properly, how hard your hitting the leather, and how deep your swivel cuts are into the leather. Is there a ‘magic’ formula/technique that you use, or was it just something you develop by feel ?

don, just found the channel. subscribed. one question/request. seems like you have about 25 or so punches there. im just getting started in leatherwork and have already spent hundreds of dollars on about 50 punches, and still never seem to have the right one. can we get a list/video of what ones you have/recommend?? also, semi related, do you buy or make your own? all mine are bought, but ive bought duplicates of some and ground them down smaller for small spaces, however, ive never done a "custom" one.

Hello Don, New into the craft, and haven't even hit the first tool yet! Quick question on the tool roll you have your tools in. what is it, and where did you get it? How many tools does it hold, and is how you typically house your tools? I thought about making a block to hold you tools vertical in the holes facing up, but the roll idea is an interesting and simple solution. Thoughts? Thank you for all the inspiration. Great work, Amazing channel.

Do you use the 45 size bar grounders for tooling belts or do you use a smaller size. I am wanting to by a set from Barry king but he recommends the size 27 or 30 for belts. Any advice would be appreciated
